The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough is the first in the Master of Rome series of books that tell the story of the Rome of Julius Caesar, how it came to be and how Caesar's story came to pass. This is actually the story, however, of Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla and whole bunch of politicking. As you do.
This was published in 1990 by William Morrow and Company Inc.

This story chronicles the political movements of Julius Caesar's Grandfather to move out of relative political oblivion for his sons such as through marriage to Gaius Marius and Sulla (Both married a Julia daughter). The first book ends with the birth of Caesar. One of the big differences in this series from other Roman Historical Fiction that I've noticed so far is how it makes Julius Caesar into the hero and vilifies most of the other Roman senators.

See, that clarifies a temporal location for me that, since I never do research, wasn't totally clear. As for other historical novels, I couldn't speak to whether vilification of Julius Caesar is more prominent because I just haven't read any others. I do appreciate the comment, and thank you for taking the time to write it.

Actually all the characters are morally grey. Just as in real life. Caesar is presented as a Great Man. Not as a good man.

Just to clarify, do you mean I should have better production values, as in the audio-visual content should be cleaner with better editing etc., or do you mean that you're hearing the occasional thought that might be worth following, but clearly I'm underperforming intellectually? If it's the former, well, this is my hobby, and not one I'm super-serious about, so I'm not dedicating too much time to it. If the latter, most of my videos here are called 'rambles' because I'm literally just turning the recorder on and saying whatever comes to mind, and this specific video series relates to memorialising my mother, so some of what goes on is also a bit about what it makes me think of at least partly in relation to her.
