The internet always gives us something to talk about. This mom spent $16,000 on her daughter's prom and of course, opinions are flying. Spend your money how you want to I am just here to be nosy about the dress and here is what I found since a few of you had asked about the young lady's dress.

No that's not the reason there are so many predators. Predators are born that way. And it doesn't matter what anyone wears. We should be able to walk around naked without being attacked, because men/women should be able to control themselves. All adults should be (barring illness) able to control themselves. I was SA in the military. The first thing i was asked was, what was i was wearing. Tshirt, jeans, hiking boots. A week later, i was forced to go to a social event, and the only top i had was a vneck sleeveless top, that i hated. I used a safetypin to close the neckline further up, and wore my bag strap across my chest, because i didn't want anyone looking down my top. Monday morning, i get hauled into my bosses office to be reprimanded for "not dressing as a victim, and not acting like one either". We can't win, and people like you make it so much worse, with your ignorant comments.@@Katzbynite

He was raised in a conservative home and his four sisters sure didn't go to prom with the entire length of their body exposed! There are so many beautiful dresses that are more modest for a 16-18 year old. And as far as it being a wedding dress? I've said it before and I'll say it again. People spend money on prom as if they never expect their children to marry, graduate college, or purchase a home. High school shouldnt be the biggest celebration when they will likely have college, a wedding, or purchase a home later. (No, this doesn't apply to everyone but I wouldn't spend college tuition, a down-payment on a home, or wedding money on a one day event full of nicely dressed teenagers.)

As a girl, I LOVED big girl stuff, make-up, heels, jewelry and such, but my Mama wouldn't allow it-Not until I was 16. When I was about 10 or 12, I really wanted some heels, but she wouldn't budge. I asked her why and her response was, "You need something to look forward to." For some reason I got that, and I don't think I ever asked for those things again until it was time. As a middle aged woman, I am so appreciative of that stand and stance. She gave me the gift of anticipation and appreciation, and I think that has led to my ability to really enjoy and relish life, and I will be forever grateful. I am concerned that most young people don't get this gift because some parents can't or won't say 'no' or 'wait' OR they just don't understand the importance of the word 'wait', so many young people get burned on life at a very young age- Always looking for the next "high". My twin and I made our own dresses for our Junior and Senior proms. Before you think we looked tacky, we were the best-dressed there, and for a fraction of the price. The secret is the fabric selected. One girl at our senior prom looked at her own dress, which was the identical pattern we had used and she was shocked. “Mine doesn’t look like YOURS!” she said. And while it’s that mother’s business how she spends her money on her daughter, I think spoiling a child at that age is going to bite her in the ass. That girl is being taught that she can have anything she wants…and we all know there’s plenty that money can’t buy!

What I noticed right off is that you can see the mesh on the prom girls thigh, but you can't see it on the product video. I suppose they could have edited that out but it just doesn't look like the mesh is there. I thought that was kind of weird. Not great advertising in that case because obviously there was some mesh that had to end somewhere on the thigh. Also thought the shoulder looked a little different in the prom picture. I think it looks like a very cleverly designed dress but at the same time I agree with your other commenters that it doesn't really look like a prom dress. More like red carpet or possibly wedding/reception dress or something like that. For a person older than a high school student. They were really strict at my prom and I just went to a regular public school. That would not have been allowed but that was a while ago. She did look really beautiful. i think the 'wedding dress' trend is happening because kids are looking at us adults thinking "is this all there is (to life)?" and are like 'eff it, we ball' for prom. they can clearly see that this is the peak for many USians and want to go all out. however, i'd pay per my income. if I was a millionaire, 16 would be nothing. but I if I take a zero away from my income, i'd take it a way from the budget. 1600 in total is even doing a lot but if the kid works to help pay for it, sure. (i'm sending mine off to the prom tomorrow.)

If that is the mindset then clearly education and parenting have failed. Grandmas are in their 30s and 40s. Parents living vicariously through their children! No guidance but only " look at me, look at me". Proms are a joke and always have been. You see these people all semester, majority don't get along yet going to a prom to dance, get drunk, wreck cars, molly people or eek out some revenge. Sure people can spend money as they please but at the same time you put it out in public and people will call you fool regardless if you can afford it or not. I was confused until I watched the video a second time because I thought the prom dress was $16,000 and that the same woman’s wedding dress was only $1300 (I rewatched the video because I never saw a second dress) - but it was “only” $1300, which I don’t think is outrageous for a prom dress. Expensive? Yes. Outrageous? No. My prom was in 2003, and my dress was just under $600 (can’t remember if that included alterations, though). Adjusted for inflation, that would be $1025 today. In 2013, my mom bought me a wedding dress by Allure Bridal for ~$900 ($1212 in today’s money). While it didn’t have the slit or neck detail, the vibe and silhouette was somewhat similar. I never got married, but I hope to do something with the dress someday because I still love it so much to this very day (and I’m much happier without the fiancé lmao). I would have worn a dress like this to prom; it’s certainly more fun than what I wore myself. Heck, I would *definitely* wear her dress TODAY, and I’m about to turn 40. My opinion? I personally think that seeing this young woman in a dress that almost completely covers her entire body except one arm and one leg as “too revealing” is se*ual objectification - people are free to disagree, and I am not trying to change anyone’s opinion here. I’m just sharing mine :-) Now, what IS absolutely bonkers to me is spending that other $14,700 on prom!! I see an exotic car in one photo that explains some of it, and I assume there were hotel accommodations, hair/makeup, etc…but I would personally have budgeted no more than 1-2x the cost of the dress for everything else. I don’t think I’d want to spend anywhere near $15k on a wedding, which is why I would rather put that money towards a house or honeymoon and just elope! My only exception to that rule would be photography and videography, which can certainly get pricey. It would be very interesting to see what her wedding dress looks like in the future, if she even wants to get married and finds someone worthy. I know that I would be low key disappointed if my mom spent more on prom than on my wedding!

Oh come on. While I agree it's ridiculous to pay that much for a prom dress and it's not an appropriate style for a high school dance, she's far from "practically naked". Everything that needs to be covered, is covered, the dress is just designed to make it look like maybe it isn't due to the full length slit. No one would blink twice if a celeb wore this on the red carpet which is where something like this is suited to. The mother/daughter were probably just trying to show off their money in front of others for attention, which I think is a far worse lesson for the daughter to be learning.

Appalling for a high school aged girl. I wouldn't wear it at a wedding either. $16,000? I hope that family also gives A LOT to charity. I don't mind people wearing a "wedding" dress to a formal event, as long as you don't look like a bride. So many high schools in my area (Northeast) have Prom Closets. Girls donate their dresses to the Prom Closet, for kids to use the following year. I first heard of it about 15 years ago and each year the inventory gets bigger and bigger. Many families, even those who don't have to live on a budget, use these dresses.
