Charles Roberts (17) plays Federico Mompou's Prelude No. 6, "pour le main gauche" with rolling score accompaniment.
Born in Barcelona, Catalonian composer Federico Mompou (1893-1990) is often considered a miniaturist, composing mainly small works with simple forms for solo piano. This specific prelude, while falling into that category, is more unique than the others because of the way it seems more complex and contemporary than it really is. Prelude No. 6 follows a very simple ABA structure and harmonic base, but the extensions and added dissonances of those harmonies, overheld with pedal across the range of the entire piano, make it sound a lot more abstract than it really is. Unusual cumulative resonances at the end of phrases sound ethereal and otherworldly. The strange and unusual intervallic relationships and movement in the melody (i.e. the very beginning - down m2, up M6, down M10, up m6) don't suggest any exact tonal center until the cadence at the end of each section. Nevertheless, the cantabile espressivo theme of the piece still prevails, and the manages to be an extraordinarily beautiful piece that is overlooked much too often.
Prelude No. 6 was published in 1952, along with Mompou's second book of Preludes for piano (nos. 5-10) There are 12 in total, with nos. 1-4 being published in 1930 and no. 11 and 12 being published posthumously in 2004.

I played this for my last 'senior' recital on April 24th, 2021 before heading off to conservatory, along with Schumann's Humoreske Op. 20 and Andrei Schulz-Evler's Concert Arabesques on motifs by Johann Strauss - "By the Beautiful Blue Danube".
