Annapurna is the tenth highest mountain in the world towering at the height of 8,091 meters. Because of this also the Annapurna Base Camp Trek in this region has become more popular and demanding. It is bordered by the Marshyangdi River on the north and east, Kali Gandaki Gorge on the west, and Pokhara Valley on the south.

Le Dhaulagiri, ou Dhaulagiri I, est un sommet culminant à 8 167 mètres d'altitude au Népal, dans l'Himalaya. Il constitue le septième plus haut sommet du monde. Sa première ascension a été réussie le 13 mai 1960 par Albin Schelbert, Kurt Diemberger, Ernst Forrer, Peter Diener, avec Nawang Dorje et Nima Dorje, aidés d'un avion. Leur itinéraire, par l'arête nord-est, est devenu la voie normale empruntée par la grande majorité des alpinistes.
En 1950, l'expédition française comprenant Maurice Herzog, Lionel Terray, Gaston Rébuffat, Jacques Oudot, Marcel Ichac, Marcel Schatz, Louis Lachenal, Jean Couzy et Francis de Noyelle est à la recherche d'un « 8 000 » à gravir et le Dhaulagiri est établi comme son objectif initial. Après plusieurs semaines de reconnaissance et d'ascensions exploratoires, les alpinistes ne trouvent pas de voie aisément praticable vers le sommet. Ils se reportent finalement sur un autre sommet, situé 34 km plus à l'est et jugé plus accessible, l'Annapurna I6. Entre 1953 et 1959, six autres expéditions subissent des échecs, pour l'essentiel dans la face nord7.

Machapuchare, Machhapuchchhre or Machhapuchhre (from Nepali माछापुच्छ्रे 'fishtail', Tamu: कतासुँ क्लिको), is a mountain situated in the Annapurna massif of Gandaki Province, north-central Nepal. Its highest peak has never been officially climbed due to the impossibility of gaining a permit from the government of Nepal.
Due to its southern position in the range and the particularly low terrain that lies south of the Annapurna Himalayas, which contains three of the 10 highest peaks in the world, Machapuchare commands tremendous vertical relief in a short horizontal distance. This, combined with its steep, pointed profile, makes it a particularly striking peak, despite a lower elevation than some of its neighbors. Its double summit resembles the tail of a fish, hence the name meaning "fish's tail" in Nepalese. It is also nicknamed the "Matterhorn of Nepal".
It is a sacred peak for the Gurungs and the people of Chomrong.
Machapuchare commande un énorme relief vertical sur une courte distance horizontale. Ceci, combiné à son profil raide et pointu, en fait un sommet particulièrement frappant, malgré une altitude inférieure à celle de certains de ses voisins. C’est la queue d’un poisson, d’où le nom signifiant « queue de poisson » en népalais.
