Artist Mona Hatoum shows us around her studio, an old shop in the heart of Berlin.
Hatoum explains why she feels the need to make things on a daily basis, continually working to create art that plays with conflict and contradiction, changing the viewer's perception of everyday objects.

I like her because unlike other artists that I see explaining their art, she doesn't care about appearing intelligent and deep. She explains her thoughts in an honest and clear way. You can clearly see the messages she's communicating and she knows people are able to relate because of it. Human emotion expressed is all the same no matter what objects she chooses to portray them.

"I find this very exciting... this 'not knowing'" Yes... in a broader sense, opening to that 'not knowing' can be what leads to fascination with life as it is unfolding - rather than the pain of resistance...

I think it's because people share the desire to view human emotions through the perception of others. Life usually shapes itself through how you see things. It never gets old because generations change and new objects are introduced...allowing different perceptions. The soap piece is a good example. Some artists choose to show the effects of present times as themes. Objects are a medium.

if my perception of few things in life was narrow, why i should not allow someone else to expand it to me, in new way to me. i should welcome those changes whom make me see objects and space from different angle .

If soap is "a temporary material and eventually it will dissolve all the borders" then why cover it and seal it after? $?

Beyond the artistic effort, which is extraordinary, why is it important to change "the vewier's perception of everyday objects?" Haven't artists done that enough already?

A four-year degree and knowing some super rich people and then you can put together some garbage and call it art sad but true.

Everyone has feelings and ideas, this garbage only serves to illustrate the dichotomy between having them and the failure to express them in a talented way. So called modern artists continually hide behind their lack of any real expertise in the field of painting or the plastic arts with condescending waffle.

nlondonex my oh my somebody is opinionated here. It's a real shame though to be flaunting ignorance... or is it personal frustration....

+ewa mähring I'm personally frustrated by people that can only respond to personal frustration by pointing out that frustration. Try to be a little bit more incisive (oh, and try not to start your superficial comments with 'my oh my')
