I agree with preplanning. You can paint yourself into a coner that's a little hard to get out of if not impossible. I believe in making sketches and drawings. It's easier to erase your mistakes than start a whole new piece.

7:28 Never mind aligning the sides of the items, I think the teeth should be aligned. - and I might suggest one of those pieces is on upside down. Clearly the pinholes are in specific locations and that might matter relative to the positions of the teeth. The result may be that the item works fine but the control lever doesn't quite align with markings on the machine. Had I been making these, I would have taken care to ensure the teeth locations were precisely where the original ones were.

In te Video when you drilled the two small holes it didn't look like the gear teeth on the pattern were lining up with those on the new part. I would have thought the holes were there to get the right setting for the teeth to mesh.

I, too, suspect that the location of the holes is relative to the gear teeth. If that is true, the recipient could just flip the new part over and repeat the same operation but with the teeth aligned.
@williamsquires3070
@williamsquires3070 3 года назад
I’d drill the two small holes in at least one of your spares right now while you’ve still got everything set up, and before you lose access to the master part (by sending it back.) This way, you’ll have a spare ready to go, with nothing else needed to put it into service should your 10EE suffer a failure of this part when you’re trying to complete a time-sensitive job. 😊

In 1971 I got a job working for Bennett respiration as a machinist apprentice. One of the noisiest machines I ever ran was a Waddell turret lathe with a feed tube. We could handle stock as large as 4-in aluminum hex and that stuff rattled around in the feed tube until you got to a very short piece of stock. The cut-off saw was pretty noisy too it could cut 4-in brass stock and that stuff the blade screams when it cuts through that. I would use earplugs and ear muffs and I could still hear that thing

@waynespyker5731

Probably not pending the teeth wear pattern duration. If the lathe had a none adjustable hard stop then perhaps. It would have been interesting to know the relationships of the bore, center tooth and .071" diameter holes. They could have been clearance for 1/16" diameter pins? If accurate timing was required they would have used a tapered pin. (Using one pin made of a softer material may have saved the original broken gear tooth being the weakest link)

I'm surprised you didn't keep the long example (where you cut teeth on both ends) in case you needed to do this work again. I guess if you kept all of the measurements it'd be okay, but still, the example would be best and less likely to be lost. Oh well ... is what it is.

i am still interested if the teeth were ment to be clocked to those two holes or is the teeth position completly independent from the gear segment and only outside shape matter i mean there can be let's say 11 whole teeth and 2 halves on the sides or 12 whole teeth or two on the edges can be formed anywhere from 0 to 100% so the whole part engagement with the machine can be up to 1/2 teeth out of aligment to the holes because we can clearly see teeth on new part don't match the oryginal part after sandwitching them together to drill the holes

Good job Keith. One question though. Is there a relationship between those two little holes and the position of the gear teeth. When you pressed the bushing in the two items were lined up with one another but the gear teeth were not from what I could see. I wonder if that discrepancy might alter the gear's "timing" for whatever function it performs. Maybe it can be adjusted on assembly.

It seems odd that, in these days of automated machining, companies haven't converted their drawings to cad files so they can make parts quickly and economically whether they need one or 100. There are some companies that have and it cuts down on what they have to stock.
@paulcopeland9035
@paulcopeland9035 3 года назад

@tiredoldmechanic1791
@tiredoldmechanic1791 3 года назад
@@paulcopeland9035 You didn't read what I posted. Having a cad file allows them to make parts quickly as needed instead of stocking parts. I used a company that could make pulleys, gears, sprockets, splined shafts, etc on very short notice at reasonable prices on CNC machines. It's not like the old days when they had long setup times on several machines so they wanted to make several of the same parts at the same time.

@@tiredoldmechanic1791 "in these days of automated machining". Rest assured everything being manufactured now, whether for mass production or even one off custom builds.......likely has all aspects in CAD. But the issue of converting the out of production parts to CAD from archival drawings is that in a lot of cases there simply are no drawings available for a CAD conversion project. And, even if drawings are available, someone has to be paid to perform that procedure. Ultimately everything revolves around the concept of supply and demand, if there is no demand for a product, nobody will manufacture a supply.
