Caterpillars are honestly my best favorite insect ever since they are little creepier than monarch butterflies and that they look like my best most interesting insect of all.🐛

I like monarch caterpillars more than monarch butterflies because I think they’re a little creepier than monarch butterflies and that caterpillars are a little new other than butterflies.🐛🦋

Very nice varied assortment of Monarchs. Caterpillars looking for a place to hang. (Annoying the others) Prepupal hanging caterpillars. A pupating caterpillar. A fresh chrysalis that’s still moving a bit. Some older hardened chrysalids. All you need is a mature chrysalis with the colors showing and an adult monarch emerging from another chrysalis.

Monarch caterpillars are like mini elephant seals, swinging their heads around wildly when they bump into one another.

A question I had 16 chrysalis form inside a cardboard habitat they were hanging close. Somewhere I read the need room to flap their wings when they emerge or else they may not be able to fly. Has this been an issue for you because I see yours are hanging close. It was a pain to move them and if I don't have to do that I would prefer to skip that step. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Virginia Hoffman There's just a chance that a monarch that just hatched can get knocked down from one that has hatched earlier, which can be very damaging to the newly emerged monarch. What's just as bad, if not worse, is a fresh chrysalis being grabbed onto by any monarch that hatched. Their little claws will tear that fresh chrysalis open which usually becomes fatal.

The more space u have the better.. Once they hatch they need like 3 hrs to dry them they will start to want to fly/move around.. U can move the butterfly as well if u have another enclosure u can put it in to hang some more... Been raising them since I was 3.. Its always best to have as much room for them as possible...like they r too close n this video.. Sometimes even with alot of space I have noticed they still come close to another.. But best thing is to have space..lots of it...

Virginia Hoffman it’ll be fine. They hang straight down until their wings dry then move around. Don’t worry.

You have to many in thus habitat. They need room to speead wings and you can see they are agitating each other. This can cause injury . Having so many so close also requires a very detailed cleaning daily to prevent disease.

There is only one corner of a much larger habitat showing here. They just preferred the same area. All successfully became butterflies :) I kept a very detailed cleaning system.

@@AndiePauline Good to hear, but I've got to admit that seeing caterpillars still roaming around that close to ones about to pupate really concerns me... I would have separated them out from the others. I try to make sure that any caterpillars I'm raising in a group setting are very close in age--not just the same instar, but having hatched on the same day (perferrably within the same few hours), and if one is growing faster I move it to a different habitat. It means I've got to keep careful note of which caterpillars lived with which other ones in case they start getting sick, but it does keep the rate of disturbance down when it comes time to molt and pupate, since they all hit the milestone about the same time. (And I've only lost one to their rather unfortunate tendency to try and eat eachother--apparently one finished her molt a bit faster than her jar-mates and thought they looked tasty. In my defense, I had just finished processing a couple dozen new caterpillars and eggs, adn thought that they would be fine if I left them as-is, since all three in the habitat had plety of food and space, were prepping to molt, and all first-instar. Hence why I'm so particular about groupings now, and why most of my groups never go beyond four members, which are generally split up in later instarts.).

I wonder why there are no fresh green fire weed leaves provided? I do not consider monarchs a cannibalistic species...

Thulaandme they’ve stopped eating by the time they J hang. They only eat milkweed and it’s undoubtedly down below where other cats are still growing.
