Join me for a tour of the old Monarto to Sedan railway line.
The Sedan line was a branch of the main south line from Adelaide. Beginning at Monarto South, It ran 70 kilometres north to Sedan and opened in 1919.
It had eight stations and goods sidings. These days, there’s nothing left but the permanent way and a few bridges.
The line from Cambrai to Sedan was taken up in the late 60s. Apamurra to Cambrai closed in 1987 and finally the line from Monarto to Apamurra saw its last train in 2005.
Check out my other videos from around South Australia while you’re here.

Thank you. My Grandfather worked in the railways at Sedan in 1919 to 1925 as a “Charge Cleaner”. My father was born in Murray Bridge in 1921 at Sister Bocks Private Hospital while the family were at Sedan. Grandfather moved the family with the railways to Port Pirie. My father joined the railways at Port Pirie as a junior Porter, then worked at Peterborough and Cockburn several times, then was the Station Master at Yongla, Wilmington and Spalding then the relieving Station Master based at Kapunda.

What is amazing is that 16 years after the last train ran that the signal light for the branch line entering back into Monarto is still illuminated (1.00 mark)!

Some parts of the way are more permanent than others. I wonder if it will still be red in another 16 years time. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching. Yep, some of the old rail was taken up by the Pichi Richi Railway and reused on their line.

Excellent work, Tony Astle covered this line with his Railview video in South Australia. He proposed activating this route and joining it up with line line to Angaston as a diversion of the tortuous route over the Adelaide Hills.

Thank you. I hope I get to see it one day. In a similar way I'm hoping that these videos are my little contribution to contemporary preservation and presentation.

The footage of old South Australia train lines is just priceless, please keep it up! For your next one, do something the Barossa Line (Gawler Central - Angaston), Mount Gambier Line (Wolseley - Mount Gambier) or Bridgewater Line (Belair - former Bridgewater station site) 👍👍

Indeed

So sad to see what could have been! And what should still exist! And successive governments fluff around , shirk their responsibilities and then talk about getting trucks off the roads and blame each other for the run down state of the roads! its beyond the pale.

The original Globelink plan to have double stacked trains bypass the Adelaide Hills would of revived the Monarto to Sedan railway line and connect to the Adelaide to Port Pirie freight line.

I was trying to find the plans for that last month but its like the plan never existed. If you can find any references please let me know. Thanks for watching!

Excellent photography, music, drone work. Took me back. I recall seeing a GM on the railway must have been 2005 or thereabouts. However, in the evening so no photographs.

@@andrewwarcup684 You'd know more than me about riding that path but I reckon the bit you mention is the same as the rest - rough. 😀

I would so love to start a clean up on this line with the aim of bringing it back to life. You may say I'm a dreamer... and yeah I may be the only one. o_O
