Travelling 36km on the Citylink and Monash Freeway from Melbourne's inner suburb of Southbank to Hallam on the urban fringes.
The Monash Freeway (known prior as South Eastern Freeway), is one of the busiest freeways in both Melbourne and Australia and travels through the heart of the south eastern suburbs.
This video is a 4 minute drivelapse/timelapse (25 minutes real) time.

Its only about 5 minutes slower if you use the non-tollway route and you'll save some money too.

I'm from Dandenong North - right in the corner of the Monash/Eastlink interchange to the right of shot. Back then it was the Mulgrave Freeway starting at the South Gippsland Freeway in 1972 and built to in sections to Warrigal Road in 1981. The Hallam Section wasn't opened until 2003 and was originally to be called 'Latrobe Valley Freeway' then 'Princes Freeway' The bit between Warrigal Road and Toorak Road (the end of the original South Eastern Freeway) remained unbuilt due to political difficulties and was finally done in 1987 - complete with four sets of lights at Warrigal, Burke, Tooonga and Toorak Roads and all of 2 lanes each way (as per the old SE Fwy and the Mulgrave Fwy after Huntingdale Rd) and then the lot was called 'South Eastern Arterial'. A change of government in the 1990's saw it grade separated and widened to 3 lanes each way and named 'South Eastern Freeway' briefly before' Monash Freeway'. More recently it has been widened to 4 lanes each way - with it being a squeeze under some overpasses - particularly High Stand Moira St which were built as part of the SE Arterial project.

+scana1979 Thanks for the additional info! I knew some of those facts, but not all! You live fairly close to where I was staying, while over there. I was down in Doveton. I also have relatives who live in Dandenong North on Outlook Drive.

It would make perfect sense if the whole lot was just renamed the M1 Princes Freeway, seeing as it connects the Princes Freeway east of Melbourne to the Princes Freeway west of Melbourne. The tolled section may have to remain known as the Citylink Tollway for as long as it remains a tolled road.

Hey Edward, as I'm not a local Victorian, I haven't ever traveled on this section of road before. There is a video from Melbourne to Morwell which is of reasonable quality that someone else did which I can link over. thanks for request. Will do it one day

+Edward Gosstray Again Edward, I reside in Adelaide, so while I consider your request and would jump at it if the opportunity arises, it's not that simple for me to drive 2000km (return) to film it. +Edward Gosstray I just went over in December/January and have been over 5 times in the last two years, but I can't guarantee I'll have enough free time everytime to make videos. Also, I would need to have a trip in mind to justify doing a video from Pakenham to Sale. It is a long drive. I did go to Lakes Entrance earlier this year, but we went down via Wilsons Prom
