Geoff Tate (pronounced "Jeff") and Chris DeGarmo were at the top of the mountain in their heyday. DeGarmo is criminally underrated as a guitarist and songwriter! For me, the standout song on this album is "Screaming in Digital"...it's like nothing else you have ever heard. This album seems so much tamer after all these years...it's hard to understand how groundbreaking it was in its day. Without "Rage for Order," there would never have been an "Operation: Mindcrime." God bless!!

Shortly after I arrived at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, in 1986, I heard a guy jamming this album and I had to go out and buy it immediately. Operation: Mindcrime is a masterpiece. Stunning guitar solo's - superb bass and thunderous drums ...but ...it's Geoff Tates vocals that takes this group to another level.....& singing live this guy delivers his amazing vocal range to perfection.....Btw, Geoff is pronounced Jeff. No idea where it came from. So happy you are finally onto this brilliant band. I look forward to more. Rage for Order is my go to QR album. When Operation Mindcrime came out I was all over that and listened to it for a solid year or more 24/7 and thought that was thier peak and it might have been from a purely production and listening standpoint, but looking back more recently, Rage was the best example of what this band was ever about from a writing, technical, talent, and stylistic measurement. Geoff never sounded better and the musicianship was at it's best.

Rage For Order is a watershed moment for the band and is unique in the catalog. The song, Walk In The Shadows to me is a love song for someone becoming and falling in love with the vampire who turned them. Then, I Will Remember is just a haunting metaphor for everyone who feels list in the world.

The Ryche ruled for a while. Nobody could touch them at their peak! They combined old school heavy metal like Maiden or Priest, especially with the guitar harmonies and high rang clear powerful vocals. Add prog with influences of Rush and Floyd. All songs have a good storyline, not just rhyming lines with mo content. You cant get any better than that! 🤘

Big Rush fan here, the Queensryche album 'Rage For Order' is my favorite album from any group. I hated it at first...but after about 3 listens (always apply the 3 listen rule before dismissing a song), it became my favorite. The subject matter was way ahead of its time and the production of the album were top tier. Also, Geoff Tate is the best 80's metal singer, or in the top 5 (give a listen to 'take hold of the flame', live in tokyo early 80's.). Their concept album 'Operation: Mindcrime' is a must listen, also one of the best concept albums of the 80's with a topic that is still relevant today.

You probably remember me from commenting a lot of your Rush reviews and I'm glad you have finally found Queensryche. They have so many great albums and songs through the decades of the 80s and 90s before they split the band. I hope you will start doing some reviews of their stuff regularly...here's a few you might want to review: Queen of the Reich The lady wore Black Take hold of the flame Anything off of Operation Mindcrime, especially I don't believe in love, Suite Sister Mary, eyes of a stranger, the mission, Breaking the Silence. If you can youtube the official videos for these songs from the Operation Livecrime DVD that is the best way to review these songs from Operation Mindcrime because they sound exactly like the studio versions and watching them play them Live is fantastic. I was actually at the Columbus, Ohio show for this tour about 10 days before they recorded the same concert at their Madison Wisconsin show which is where operation livecrime video was shot. That album was followed by their biggest album ever Empire, containing a ton of great songs: Best I Can Jet City Woman Another Rainy Night Resistance Silent Lucidity Hand on Heart Anybody listening?

Loved them for 30 years….at this point they were just starting to find their sound. By the next album they had found their true sound. Operation Mindcrime is a masterpiece

Operation Mindcrime must be listened to in one sitting. It is a rock opera, a story, so basically it’s one long song. It is absolutely the best heavy metal/rock album ever made, a perfect masterpiece. Enjoy!

If you were real lucky and had cool DJ's, (back in those days they'd even take song requests) they would play "Queen of the Reich" or "The Lady Wore Black" on the radio in the early 80's. Made me love Geoff's voice immediately. Another band that I completely regret not seeing live. I don't know why my phone won't allow the placement of the umlaut over the y in their name.

Got this in HS when it came out, I love it. I'd say as a complete album Operation: Mindcrime is more impressive, but Rage For Order is really underrated and has some very mature compositions and playing. Even their first LP 'The Warning' is impressive. Definitely a great band in that era. Thanks much for the reaction.

Thanks for tackling Queensryche, one of my favorite hard rock / heavy metal bands ever. The have a bunch of good albums but their initial EP and first full album - Warning, along with Operation Mindcrime, were the best from the original band. Please do Take Hold of the Flame (live 1984 is the best version), Queen of the Ryche, The Lady Wore Black and On the Roads to Madness. As for Operation Mindcrime, like a Pink Floyd album it is best heard all the way through as it is a concept album of the 1st order. Enjoy! Rock On. 😎

*Well, where do I begin with this wonderful reaction . . .* Wow! You guys make me feel pretty dang special on my B-Day (The day original bassist for Metallica "Cliff Burton" died, which I always remember on this day: A 2 Fisted Salute yet again Cliff! m m ). Oh YOU get the credit Nick for getting Alexi into Metal, my friend :D But I'm glad I helped, that is really awesome that you (Lexi) liked it. You guys were really getting into "Walk in the Shadows" and the awesome dueling guitars of Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo, and then a totally different mood, that you both immersed yourselves in the ethereal tone of "I Will Remember" and as Lexi picked-up, that Spanish timbre in the duel solo. Note that the _Discography_ I sent you guys, is basically the BEST years of the _original_ line-up, and musically at the top of their game. They have "10 albums" _after_ that, including the last 3 with their replacement of Tate with Todd La Torre, and back to their original sound (though, for unknown reasons, Scott Rockenfield did not drum on the last album). 1st, its been awhile to hear the whole album in one go (I usually hear various tracks from their discography these days), and my eyes welled-up, partly because you guys were getting into 2 of my fave tracks from this album, and I too was getting "goose bumps" and also remembering what it was like to buy the "Lp", which I still have, and for all the albums up to Promised Land (and later, on CD), and putting the album onto my then, Pioneer PL-4 direct-drive turntable. One of those happy memories just diving into it all under headphones, and listening to it in cars with my friends at that time in West Covina California (including adding tracks to various Mix or "Concept Tapes" on cassette). I soon saw the Tour, which was my 1st Queensrÿche Concert, at the Santa Monica Civic Center (which decades later I would live and work near-by, seeing it practically everyday :). *The Album . . .* So, this being technically their "3rd" (the 1st was actually an Ep, that you also have) album, this is the album that I would hear (read) a music reviewer in a Heavy Metal magazine, first use the term "Prog Metal". This made very much sense to me, I had started off as a Progressive Rocker at 14 in 1977 with Kansas - Point of Know Return, and slowly discovered all the famous British bands who invented it from 1968, and thru the 1980's, when I began to delve into Hard/Heavy Rock that would become Heavy Metal circa 1981/85. This was Metal that was more polished, yet kept the heaviness, but with sophistication, a bit more complexity and layers. With a more dense production/engineering. To hear exactly how they _evolved_ up to this point, it is a MUST to hear next: 1. The Self-Titled Ep from 1983 (that would have you think they would turn into a Thrash band, from the outstanding _Speed Metal_ opener "Queen of the Reich"); But all "4" tracks on it are so unreal, professional and well-thought out, for a band that from a "Demo", and 1 time club/live performance, got them a major record deal. THAT is how good they were to the record execs of EMI/Capitol Records. 2. "The Warning" (1984); Here even more improved are the lyrical content, compositions, and the chops of each member shine. The tracks that would show signs of where they were headed in this new subgenre of Metal; NM156 (my 1st to 2nd personal fave), EN Force, Take Hold of the Flame (a fan fave, and the epitome and power of Geoff Tate's vocal abilities), Before the Storm, and the EPIC; Roads to Madness (This track shows off their compositional prowess, creativity, and where they were headed for "Rage for Order"). This track also added an orchestra, conducted by the late-Soundtrack Score composer "Michael Kamen" who would work again with them in the future. For future tracks from "Rage"; Neue Regel, Chemical Youth (We Are Rebellion), The Killing Words, Screaming in Digital. But again, the whole album is solid. "Walk in the Shadows" was a great opener. I admit, from QR becoming my fave band, slightly more than that era of "Metallica" who I also admired ("Master of Puppets" 1986), but when I saw the band photo on the back of Lp, they were dressed-up in a Gothic-like/New Romantic . . . God forbid, "Glamm" look, and I can remember fearing that they had moved into a more commercial direction. But was very relieved that they were still heavy, yet this new sound ("Progressing forward") was very intriguing (albeit 2 tracks that were touching on the commercial; London, Gonna' Get Close to You - which was a cover, almost to a T, of Canadian Female vocalist; "Dalbello", who at the time I never heard of). Their Wiki page _claims_ they were also called Glamm, but their sound and especially lyrical content to me were far-from being that. Even a track like "I Will Remember", it may be a power-ballad, but this was on another level of composition, all that you guys touched-on in the reaction makes it very special. If its the crisp, lush sound of the Acoustic Guitars (of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton), how they are Mic'd, to the Drums (the VERY underrated Scott Rockenfield) that were quite heavy for this type of song, yet it fit perfectly to give it that _edge,_ the Bass you can feel in the room (Eddie Jackson). And the outstanding vocals of Geoff ("Jeffrey Wayne Tate") backed up by the underrated back-up vocals from DeGarmo. The "Whistles" could be mistaken for a Synth (Tate) at 1st, but perfectly mic'd to give it that ethereal element to push the track even further. Tate whistles on the 1st/Ep track "The Lady Wore Black" (another fan fave). But in the credits of their 5th and most commercially successful album; "Empire" (1990), where it listed the band members, it stated; Geoff Tate - vocals, keyboards (no whistles) :p. Maybe he was sort-of embarrassed using that in the past? Too bad because that was a very unique element. Apparently, somewhere I had heard/read that the song wasn't (what I thought) about the "loss" of someone, but seeing a "Satellite" passing far-off in the night sky, and imagining it being a "Spy Satellite" with the ability to infiltrate your mind: "There's a cold wind out tonight The chill of distant eyes An orbit survey finds... your mind" "There's a thought that fills your mind A vision of the time When knowledge was confined And we wonder how machines Can steal each other's dreams From points that are unseen... It's real" They (and many other bands of the time) were writing about the intrusion of "Big Brother" even back then. Which is reflected in that dark, foreboding synthesizer opening, with that lower register "ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh" (and other synth sounds behind it). Its an amazing piece that you can take apart to find its _beyond_ a simple power ballad. Also, this was yet another "Chris DeGarmo" piece (lyrically and compositionally). He was just as important as Tate's writing. This made a powerhouse team. So when DeGarmo surprisingly left the band after their 7th album "Hear in the Now Frontier" (1997), the magic left the band (imo), which is a whole 'nuther story of in-fights, lawsuits and more (though DeGarmo quietly left before all that, and became a "Commercial Airline Pilot"). Also drummer Scott, came-up with the various "Soundscapes" and ideas for dialogue effects that happen between and within most of the tracks (and on the following albums), another element that set them apart from other Metal bands. *Live Rage* The Tour apparently included them "opening" for bands like Ratt, AC/DC, Bon Jovi and Ozzy Osbourne, which they probably blew the doors off of, but as said on the wiki-page: "although their music was not quite compatible". When I saw them at the Santa Monica Civic, they were the headliner, and "Keel" opened for them (Yngwie Malmsteen played with Ron Keel, for the band "Steeler"). It was amazing to see them in a small arena, and sounding exactly like their albums. Though they had an "instrumental" piece that they'd never play again (apparently some of it was used later for "Operation Mindcrime"). And Scott's drumkit was really weird, with various tubing emerging from it (as his kits always became more elaborate for each tour). Also at our particular show, the band members did not dress in overtly "Glamm" clothing or make-up :p. Though there is no "official" release of Live footage, there is this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rPBIs2Aop2g.html And a great performance of "Walk in the Shadows" from the Empire Tour: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zilmYuinQm0.html And, I can remember how this gave me shivers, from MTV's Unplugged series (which I don't really care for, but the QR performance was beyond incredible), which happened within their extensive International tour of "Empire". A VERY moving rendition of "I Will Remember" (breakout the tissues N&L) from the "Building Empire's" VHS/DVD Documentary of the band up to that tour: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1pxMrlzslHA.html (Everytime I watch this, I "whistle" the parts :). You can see Chris DeGarmo can't help to crack a smile during the Solo, because they are feeding off the energy of the room, watching _them_ perform this beautiful music. They were not just doing an acoustic version of many tracks, they were re-inventing them (other than I Will Remember), as if they were alternate versions that were _written_ for the acoustic guitars. I look at this video for the hundredth time, and I have mentioned this to friends, even their "dress style" (in the video) influenced a LOT of Prog Metal bands that were coming up and were peers of QR at that time. Along with the dueling guitars, and Tate's amazing voice and vocal ranges. More about the album: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_for_Order I am excited to see you dive into their early history, all the tracks/albums many of us have lived with, and the talents we've admired, from the *Fathers of Prog Metal* . . . . . . . But there is *Another* :o

MVUNIT3, I REALLY enjoyed your LONG post about QR! I came back to hear this reaction again after watching it about 7 months ago for the first time. LOVED their reaction! It always makes me feel good when someone is just discovering the magnitude of the best band in the multiverse! I always comment too extensively, and am trying to keep it more brief, so I LOVED seeing someone else go on and on about QR. They DESERVE the attention and accolades! I loved all the wonderful things you pointed out about this magnificent band. I hope to see many more QR reactions on this channel!

We are still doing our best to educate Nick & Lexi in all things Progressive Rock & Prog Metal \m/.
