This week, we're going back to basics and we're going to focus on composition thru the study of specific frames of my favorite movies. So space-bar that film during your favorite scene and screenshot that action scene or establishing shot! Today, we get things started with one of my favorite directors, Yorgos Lanthimos, and the second film he directed, wrote and produced, Alps. Don't worry, we're not going to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but this particular image comes from a "dance" sequence that is unnervingly and suddenly violent. Lanthimos has a way of portraying an absurdly dark world that is nonetheless relatable in its humanity. You want to look away, but you willingly become a stoic observer. This sequence is brilliant in the sense that there is a sort of chaotic choreography that is masterfully paced. Everything is in motion, bodies and colored spotlights moving slowly, crashing into each other, restlessly; it's almost impossible to not treat this image as anything but a loose painting. We're going to pay special attention to each movie's aspect ratio, today a beautifully stretched out 2.35:1, and every day we'll try to speak of how the specific chosen proportions are used to tell each specific story. It's a perfect exercise for anyone to do, and you can go back to watching your favorite movies and exploring them in ways that solidify our understanding of composition and can only make us stronger painters!
