So what do think about this #mondaymending??? Think it's a good idea? Want to join in? It's easy, just tell me what are you going to mend this monday? And use #mondaymending on your own mending pictures on Instagram! (Aaand bonus points, come back to let me know you've done it!)
Evelyn Wood I have slipped lately and my pile has grown thank you for this motivator 😁. Much needed Today I am going to attempt to lengthen another turtleneck jumper that is to short. I tried to fix it before by crocheting on the bottom but that didn’t work. Maybe this way will work. Or it will end up being cut into strips to make in fabric yarn for crochet rugs 😘
I am older & I do not do instagram! Sorry about that. I think this is a great idea & it just might, I mean it WILL inspire me to get my pile done!!!!!!!! Yes, I like the idea a lot!!! Thank you. Take care & God Bless.
j. mc My mending pile has turned into 2 plastic bins!!! Love the memonic to get started and keep going. (And that's not counting a bin or two for refashioning. Accountability time 👗👚👖👕👘🙈🙉🙊 1 minute ago
I crochet and I just finished my first pair of socks for myself and am working on a pair for my husband.....as hard as he is on socks I shall soon be doing darning days as well!
Sigrid, I don't know what sock yarn you use, but I've found mending and darning my wool socks with a strand of poly/cotton thread (in addition to a leftover bit of the yarn used) in a matching color to the wool helps extend wear and reinforce the repaired areas.
@@sigrid129 You are very welcome. I inherited a darning egg from my grandmother's sewing notions, and it's very useful for mending socks and worn spots in sweaters. If you don't have a darning egg, an old lightbulb will serve just as well.
When I lived close to my sister, we started a 4th Saturday of the month "sewing bee" to tackle our mending pile...but we asked anyone who wanted to come to join us. She still has the sewing Saturday going.
I love the idea of Mending Monday, you should definitely do a series of videos (if possible) to encourage people to give it a go. I try to do my mending on Friday evenings when I'm tired after a long week (usually in my favorite armchair, with a good documentary on the telly and a nice cup of tea to keep me going). I'm juggling house renovation, clearing an overgrown garden, growing veg, maintaining out current house in order and upcycling at the moment so made myself a little schedule to keep me organised. It goes something like this: *Monday - cleaning the house *Tuesday - gardening *Wednesday - house renovation *Thursday - gardening *Friday - crafting, upcycling and mending *Saturday - house renovation *Sunday - putting my feet up. It's the only way I can manage without getting overwhelmed.
Here we are in April 2020 I live in the USA IN OREGON I just found your channel at a really good time as we are on stay at home order from our governer. I have been too depressed to sew. After watching lots of your videos I feel better .I like sewing and thrifting. Your channel is perfect for me as I also love the vintage fashions especially the 20's and 30's. I will watch any video you make.
Hope you're still keeping well, Jeannie. I've been mostly staying at home here in Ontario, Canada since mid-March. I've used part of my time learning how to use my sewing machine: PJ pants, a couple of tank tops, masks and headlands. Challenging times we're living through!
Mending quite often gets put off "forever!" But, you have a garment you can wear again, and it doesn't take as long as sewing a brand new garment! I'm going to begin having a "Monday Mending" on Mondays. Yea for "Monday Mending!" Thanks for just sharing what you are doing!
I know, I've had things waiting .... for years! They would just just get added to The Pile and and put off, well forever! That's why I needed the push to get mine done!
It is a direct consequence of having lots of clothes, I would think. I am guilty as charged, I own some 30 pairs of trousers, jeans etc. and when one is unwearable, it's no big deal. If I had only five or six, though, I would have to hurry up and get the mending done.
Thank you for reminding of the values I was taught. I am going back to mending and refashioning my exeisting problem clothing. I have fallen into our " throw it away lifestyle". Beceause of you I will be going back to my root values!
I’ve always mended clothes for my family and myself. My Monday mending is complete....buttons sewn on again and a tiny hole in a cashmere scarf is repaired. Love that skirt Evelyn! 👍🏾Deb
Monday mending went well. Three more pairs of trousers ready for this Monday. I'm happy about that because two pairs will be coming on holiday with me. Happy Monday mending. x
I mend and repair my husband’s yard work clothes, why, because he wears them snagged or not. Bless his heart, he is very frugal. Alterations and mending is how I helped my husbands support our household for years. I love your techniques! Thank you for your dedication!
LOVE this idea, and the concept of being less wasteful is excellent. I have just this week gone through a clothing closet and found many items i’m hoping to refashion. You will be my inspiration and motivation!
Have been a huge fan of mending/altering my clothing. Made a deal with myself years ago, NOT to put anything back in the closet that was not mended or fit perfect. I've been able to get ahead of it and now mend or alter as needed. Just today, I took up the shoulders on my Mom's top so it fit her perfect. Love your idea! Big Hugs
I have a dedicated container for these special assignments. Partially because I see things with a fresh eye when they were not dangling before my eyes for weeks.
Evelyn, You have inspired me ! I made most of my clothes when I was younger, due to size issues and cost. Now in my 60's I am excited by refashioning and creating new things again. I will also pay more attention to details, and go slower. Thank you!
Sounds like what happens if I’m sewing something and want to wear it but have run out of time lol. I’ve sewed myself into a dress a few times because I didn’t have time to replace/sew the zip lol
more thoughts on mondaymending: In case some in our community haven’t thought of the following activities that i e been doing for years and find they really take little time for the extended use the textile gai s: 1. worn towels become rags, kitchen counter covers (less paper towels use to wipe things down), or even large “napkins” for protecting clothes when having a meal watching the tv. 2. fabric napkins cost almost nothing at garage sales - use in place of paper, sew many together for more of the counter covers or clothes protectors mentioned above, take advantage of the straight, hemmed edges and use as pockets on aprons. 3. save up a few worn bed sheets and sew together to make drop cloths; also great at the beach or on a picnic; use to quickly cover a couch after coming inside from yard work or jogging. 4. I use all these projects as a way to use up older spools of thread. 5. I’m assuming everyone does this one - never discard a worn tee shirt as they make the very best cleaning and polishing cloths. 5. garage sale linens - if the towel, sheet, napkin, or whatever is 100% cotton and a good price i usually pick it up as the fabric is great for aprons (i ruin far less clothing when i don one), some clothing, etc. and the linens don’t have to be your favorite color to stand in as usable items throughout one’s living space, car, etc. And speaking of the car, no need to grab some paper napkins at your fast-food spot if you keep in your car some stuff f the items mentioned here. These activities really take little time as i do them when i’m too tired to do other things that take more precision or patience.
I started a sewing knitting circle on Monday’s for my MIL after she lost her husband. She loves coming, has done loads of adjustments to clothing. My Mum now comes- she is teaching me to repair knits properly at the moment, my daughter with her baby comes- double whammy the great grandmas get baby cubbies. Anything goes, skill levels are very different. I recently had one daughter learning knitting and one learning crotchet- I couldn’t teach them when they were little. SIL now comes as well. All look forward to every second Monday
I've been watching you for a few weeks now since I got a beginner sewing machine. Just found these Monday Mending videos tonight while taking in my work pants that are getting too big. On a Monday, too 😅🤣
You inspired me to do a sneaky mend! I have a pair of knee-length socks that were completely worn out on the soles, but I really loved them. I had a pair of ankle socks that always slip down, so I put them on underneath my knee-length and stitched them in place so now I can continue using my beloved socks and I don't have to be annoyed when I accidentally pick those small ankle socks!
I love this concept of encouraging us to mend on a regular basis. I recently sewed on buttons which were looking too loose to be safe. I will go and check to see if anything else needs mending. I put the mending jobs to the back of my wardrobe and to the back of my mind. Thank you for this.
LOVE this idea! I have a huge pile of mending for myself and my teenage daughters. First will be a pair of sweatpants that have snap buttons all the way down the sides. One one button, one side of the snap tore through the fabric (near the top of the pants) so I’m going to just sew it shut and it will become non functional. And then they need to be hemmed shorter. Picked these up at a rummage sale and my daughter loves them.
I’m not a sewer, but I’m learning hand embroidery and I am in awe of people who know how to sew with a machine and who can create clothing! My mom knows how to make skirts for my nieces and she made my sons pajama pants. I get confused with turning things inside out and “seeing” it properly so I’ve never been able to learn it. I have mad respect for those of you who do! 💜
Love the Monday Monday idea. I work so much better with with a schedule. First I need to shorten a ton of shirts...its Sunday night here so tomorrow I will definitely get a couple done. Thanks.
Finally put the buttons on properly to a shirt I made and rushed the original button stitching. I lost one of them on Saturday to took this Monday to mend. Simple job forever postponed except now it’s Monday Mending. Thank you for the prompting.
I wish I had the problem of my clothes being too big 😂 one of the reasons I follow is to pick up tricks on how to refashion my beautiful clothes that no longer fit 👍
How convenient I was mending whilst watching/ listening to this video. Love this concept! I was sewing a label back into an 80s sweater I'm going to be selling and I have a lovely pair of wide leg stretch denim pants from Target that are high waisted with slant pockets and need snaps. The pockets have these awful white cotton for the pocket body and due to my robust form the slant pocket pushes forward and reveals this white material against a dark blue denim which I think looks terrible. So instead of throwing them away or donating them because I really like these pants I decided to sew- in the snaps and repair my issue.
LOVE this idea! Thank you for showing us how to mend clothing. I have a big bag of clothes that need mending and this has given me inspiration to finally tackle that pile one Monday at a time :)
I love the idea of mending Monday! I have many projects to choose from! I think I’ll go for my son’s jeans: they have a too-big rip in the knee and a stain; in addition I have to iron and starch it so it looks perfect!
Hi Evelyn! I just wanted to thank you for your videos and your enthusiasm. As a family, we never owned anything to sew, mend and fix... now I am trying to learn. My boyfriend gifted me an old sewing machine and I intend to make good use of it. I am planning on joining the Monday mending soon! Looking forward to it. Keep inspiring us!
Oh, I love this. Tonight, I'm grabbing my favorite pair of elastic waist culottes, and correcting them so that the elastic doesn't roll. I've been avoiding them for weeks because of it.
You have inspired me with this! I'm two weeks in, and the family seems to be enjoying putting things in my pile. Thank you for the wonderful idea. This week I mended my daughter's butterfly chair cushion.
I have a blouse that I love but has a tear so it’s Monday mending for me and I love your video because I learn from you and it’s also a reminder for me to do my own
I love Monday Mending! This week I brought in 2 Hawaiian shirts I got at the thrift store They're the more flowy style, so just a simple serg down the sides from the armpit was all it needed!
Love the idea of Monday Mending! I’m a volunteer at our Repair Cafe here in Albany WA. I do the sewing mending, of course. Our second Repair Cafe is tomorrow. I’m so looking forward to it!
I actually did some mending this morning before your video appeared (Sunday Sewing?). I put some elastic in the back waistband of a pair of jeans and I replaced the hem in a sleeve from one of my favorite tops. It came out LAST summer. I felt happier immediately.
This makes more sense than some of the other "popular" ideas out there, when it comes to changing behaviors to make less waste. Thank you for the motivation. 😊
Great idea! My pile is not a pile but a mountain. I do laundry and mending for my husband, my son, my mother, my brother and myself. The next thing I’m going to mend is my brother’s jeans. It has a hole on the backside.
Love this idea! There are more than a few things in my closet that I need to be repurposed and mended to make work. Being able to see how you mend various things will help me. :)
I would even like more Monday mending videos. Because I honestly would have thought about fixing this skirt this way. It’s about the thought process of a professional.
There's no one way to do anything! And by sharing ideas like this it gives us all new perspectives on how to tackle something! 😄I'm glad you liked watching it!
Love the skirt! I made a few of these in the actual 70's (yes, I'm old). I think that skirt actually fastened in the centre front but I like that you prefer it on the side. I love the idea; keep it up! I'm joining in to decrease the Mending Mountain. The first thing I'll mend is a dress from an op shop that I got for 30 cents for my granddaughter that has a tiny hole and some worn buttons. See you next Monday!
What a fantastic idea!! Ok I’ll give it try plus I can hold myself accountable. Tomorrow will be Monday for me and I’ll hit my disgusting mend pile. I’m really embarrassed of how big mine is. I don’t know yet what I’ll mend but will add to my comments later. Thanks for sharing this great idea and happy sewing! 👗✂️👗
Hi Evelyn! Ok, so I came home from work, did my usual thing, and then checked my mail, realized you replied to my comment, and then it hit me that it was Monday mend! Thank you for encouraging me after totally forgetting! I really have a large embarrassing pile awaiting me. I mended this really cute top of my daughters and some much needed under garments. Thanks for being there with such a great idea! 💁♀️
Monday Mending is a great idea! I am certainly going to finally tackle two blouses that I bought on sale but were too big for me around the next and kept falling down over my shoulders. I think an elastic band around the entire tops of the blouses is called for. Thank you for your inspiration. Dee from Pacific Northwest, USA
I mend my step sons trousers as he always manages to split them. I also do other types of mending my step daughter has a dog and he always manages to bite though his toys or dog bed, instead of just putting them in the bin, I will repair these things using patches or just sewing the hole up
I love it!, I need to get better at mending. I only get to it about every 6 mo. So I'm so backed up. Ugg. Been gone so much this summer. I will be home in another week and am making a promise to myself to start Monday mending with you.🤞
Wed. (although my life recently changed enough that I need to evaluate the day again) is my "Laundry day" I try not to schedule things that day and I do all our household laundry (there are 6 in our household). In between loads, I try to take some time to mend items. Great goal.
Monday mending, what a good idea. I will do the same 👍i have a dress the buttons kept comming undone, so i put bigger buttons on instead but those buttons are too big, so i have to get some more buttons that are the right size.
I will finally get around to some handsewn mending I need to do for my vacation! I need to sew some straps back on and won't even take too long I just need to find the needles...
One of my last mends was to change a longer elastic band for my 50's petticoat. Well the only band there was in the local shop was so soft, I realised I could get away with just making a knot in it instead of sewing! (Actually had to tie it tighter a few times, as it gave in.)
Hello Evelyn. I needed your inspiration for mending. So thumbs up for Monday Mending a fab idea. Tomorrow, Monday, I will be altering the waist on two pairs of trousers as I will need them for my holiday's. I totally agree with make do and mend, I wish more people thought the same way. I will comment when finished my mending. Jacqueline from Birmingham, England
Evelyn Thanks. My mom always mended on Mondays. She did the laundry on Thursday and Friday (9 kids) and made a pile of mending for Monday. (It was my job to iron on Thursday evening) I however have a rule, I always start my sewing sessions by mending what needs to be mended first. That way it gets finished and out of my way and I generally never have more that 1-3 fixes each time because I sew often. I started doing this because I kept moving my mending pile around so I could create need items, all the while i was feeling guilty because my mending pile was just being moved around and growing taller. Currently I only have a zip replacement for my niece's jacket, once I find the new zip .
The simple mending is also alot of mending. Its not complicated to bring in the sides to make a shirt fit ur body but makes your clothes look a hundred times better
I've gotten a little bit better at staying on top of my mending, but let me say, I'm relieved I'm not the only who creates lavish items while wearing fallen hems and unraveling seams. I can hear my trousers rolling their eyes at me when I'm seed-beading for seven hours straight without lifting a finger to pop a button back on my waistband.
I just had an ‘unfinished garment mending day.’ I managed to make a snip in the skirt of a dress I’m making. It’s Liberty Tana Lawn. Fortunately the position and pattern totally lent themselves to mending it with a tiny square of fabric. ‘
I think I'll be repairing some more shoes this Monday as well as dying some clothes. I haven't been super consistent with my mending, but I'm working on it!
I just moved so tomorrow (Monday) I will set up my sewing space and hopefully get around to repair a black asymmetric skirt I have wanted to wear the past couple of weeks. Hopefully, next Monday will involve more mending as my mend pile really grown.. 🙈
I go to a gym that has a jacuzzi/pool that is very chlorinated. It trashes my swimsuits, that are all second hand of course. So for tomorrow I am going to sew down three more tears on my swimsuit. When I had my first huge tear(luckily it is lined)one of ladies in the locker room said I would have to throw it away. Oh no, no, it still has more life in it. I sewed it like I was a Dr. and was giving someone stitches. You can't even tell. That was 6 months ago. Now I have to sew the other three tears.
@@Evelyn__Wood I just finished sewing up all the tears. I started sewing up the tears but when I pulled the thread through the fabric would shred. So, I just overlapped it and sewed it down. It is freeing to be able to sew something and not have it matter what it looks like. I patch my hubby's jeans all the time and don't concern myself with how the stitching looks. After I do one of my "scrappy" sewing jobs then I work on a project that I want to look nice.
I'd remembered about Monday mending day, so I sat the things that need mending beside of my machine today and in the morning one of the items will be repaired, I was given a nice gauzy skirt that needs to be made much much smaller, so that will be first in my pile.
I wish I could say I'd fix stuff on a specific day but shift work kinda gets in the way. That said, summer is my sewing time because I go from full time study and a day of work to just three days of work a week. I am tempted to try my own version of this where I just use my first day off for the month and get everything done, though. Also, on the theme of slow fashion, that skirt looks like the perfect kind of thing to make for a little girl who's going to get bigger as she gets older. :-)
