On this episode of Mondays With Mooch I sit down with Pan and Bob, two long time skinheads and founders of The Rose City Bovver Boys. We discuss the early Skinhead scene in Portland Oregon, the start of RCBB, the state of the scene today, the influence of politics, and the importance of working out and staying healthy.
**Editors note**: Communities Against Hate, although a political organization, never used us as pawns and actually went out of their way to support us during our time together. I sincerely apologize if I made it sound any other way than a positive relationship.
Thank you to: Pan, Bob, Mad Marci, and Jon Bair for the photos.

Great show. Unfortunately, many years pass between the times i see these guys. But no matter how much time goes by, I'll always have love for them and consider them family. When my (now 21 year old) son was born mooch and his twin brother Jeremy got him a onesie that had the Agnostic Front Doc Martin's logo on it so he could look sussed from the crib. Hopefully, Mooch can make it out for the RCBB 30-year that's coming up. R.I.P. Bolbi / Smiley R.I.P. Tane

Love it!!! The skins i grew up around were either in ARA or hated dirty punk rockers. I saw bob & pan around when i lived in pdx but never talked with them. Thanks for shouting out Smiley. I was at a house show with a grindcore band & some crusty bands when he came home from his bid & some girl took him into a van & made him happy. I miss that dude

Great to hear this from you guys from the States. In the UK it was quite varied. Not so much a gang in UK more a tribe sub-culture for teenagers. Mods vs Rockers in the 1960s and later the Ska scene in the late 70s and early 80s. I was a Grebo/freak that always looked up to the bikers in my city at the time like the Ratae, UKGBs - guys that rode British bikes like Triumphs and Nortons, Beezas, AJs etc - they're weren't many in Leicester at the time other than an early, perhaps unapproved Angels MC - I thought they were cool though and what was the beginning of some local biker groups that ultimately became part of what was the early Outlaws in the Midlands but loved the whole mods and rockers clash in the early 80s and even involved in some light verbal skirmishes lol - good stuff though nothing crazy just school kids scrapping. I was too young for the original 60s mods and Rockers scene but was part of the 1979-80 movement as a schoolkid. Early skinhead bands was Slade - what a great band they were! The anti-nazis movement only came in with the Mod revival during 1979-80 in the Ska scene. As a greasy heavy rock wannabe biker type I was into band likes Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Purple and Motorhead. However, I loved some of the Ska band songs - if I'm honest we all did - even us wannabe bikers back in 79'-80 - like The Specials: "Ghost town" about a Midlands town called Coventry down the road from my City Leicester, Selector:same old show on my radio - great track! and The Beat:"Tears of a Clown" takes me back to my school days :-) what a great track that was!!! - to name a few. The Mod/Ska movement didn't seem to last very long from 1979 to 1980/81 but it burnt brightly. Great tunes and great times🙂

I have several questions after watching a lot of your interviews around youtube. Please be patient and I mean no disrespect if any come off as bad questions. Were your local anti-racist skinhead crews, and especially the Bover Boys a pre-Antifa group? Did they get absorbed into RCA? Can you be apolitical and not care and party with both SHARP/Anti racist groups as well as National Socialist or Neo Nazi skinheads and let bygones be bygones? If one of the local skinheads does this in their older years what do the other think of them? Why do most Portland skinheads march and riot with Antifa and join them? Some skinheads that are antiracist are American patriots, some even served in the US military, but they seem to still take the side of far left communists (pretending to be anarchists) and then attack the actual normal American patriot types. There are pretty much no nazis in Oregon anymore and the ones that were, were very few. Some of the former nazis are now reformed and trying to live a peaceful life alone and not bothering anyone. What is your opinion of doxxing people and putting people on blast like how Antifa does this and trie to ruin people's reputation and get them fired from jobs etc? Why do you guys think Proud Boys are exactly the same as Antifa when they clearly are not? They are nothing even close to opposite ends. If you were comparing Volksfront with Antifa then this would be correct. but Proud Boys? Come on! Part of their bylaws are to be Anti-racist and many non-whites joined them. What is your opinion of Tom Tegener? He seemed to be some skinhead gang leader and claimed he is pro America but was attacking people holding American flags and running beside Antifa people, but then claiming he is not a communist. What's up with that? There was also that guy named Matt who has only one foot who street boxed that Samoan dude named Tiny and got beat up. What's up with him? What do you think of that guy Luise who identified as a skinhead and is a powerful Antifa leader in Portland? Do you think RASH skinheads are good or real skinheads? Red and Anarchist Skinheads. Also what happens to Antiracist skinheads when they end up in prison? Who do they hang with inside the prison system? You seem like you find self worth by joining other people, like joining gangs and groups and clubs. Do you see yourself as an independent man and thinker and can be proud by being alone ever? Not that we should be alone, but you know can you survive alone? I have a lot more questions but these are a few.

@@MondaysWithMoochHe’s living in middle America raising a family. He cut all ties to the movement after Volksfront shut down. He was a good dude just was trapped in his own demons and creation. It took me a bit longer and I linked up with the Hammers. Now I’ve cut all ties expanding my views of the world through experience. I’ll always love the music, roots, and traditions of the Skinhead culture it’s just not for me any longer.

Well the original Skinheads listened to that exciting new music their jamaican work mates at the ports and factories brought over from home. Ska and Rocksteady and Northern Soul. All black music and the Jamaicans had their own style of dress up smart. They walked the Rude Boy style mostly. Oi came about when the Sex Pistols threw in their shovel and working class boys founded the first working class street punk Bands. The Oi Slogan came from Gary Bushells release of an Album, which he tagged ' oi oi that's yer lot and it featured a few of this terrace Punks in Flight jackets. Soon after that the Bonehead Element surfaced through the hooliganism all the terrace kids was into back in the day.

Cockney Rejects released Oi! Oi! Oi! in 1980 but you’re correct that Oi! started out as second wave UK punk rock. Instead of the new wave crap a lot of young people started bands that were much more feral and appealing to the angry, working class youth.

Nice! Always cool to see interviews with OG skinheads...I agree with him that the gang aspect of the Skin culture was more pronounced in Los Angeles than other cities...There was a time in the early to mid 90's where you couldnt tell the Skins or the Dudes from older Punk gangs like LADS, from Hispanic-style gangs...(Creased Khakis, Nike Cortez, Wifebeater)...lol maybe thats why 2tones were beefing with SHARPS...The Political side against the gang side...who knows?

When did Sharp and 2tones start beefing? When Sharp started the majority of them didn’t want to smash nazis but rather pass out flyers and protest. Only a few of the original Sharps from the SFV and SGV were down for smashing nazis.
