Really? I think they changed it based on distance away from school by the time I was in highschool. People who lived close by had orange and everyone else (regardless of income) had the green. I had a friend who lived off food stamps and in government housing and she had a green metro.

Basic cable is still pretty privileged. We grew up on local TV, which back then was pretty decent. We had PBS, plus Saturday cartoons and after-school cartoons on Fox, ABC, and NBC. Oh and TGIF with all the teen shows. Not to mention, all the black family sitcoms on Warner and UPN. And no paid music streaming bc Napster and radio music was free, recording tapes & burning CDs was normal. The 80s and 90s were mad chill, never felt culturally-deprived tbh. But when it came to clothing trends, taking the bus, free school lunch program (aka hot lunch) vs paid lunches (aka cold lunch), signing up for sports programs/extracurricular activities/summer camp, and paying for field trips, that's when we really felt it.

We had kinda had one too. We built a new house in front the old one. When we moved to foreign a cousin or an aunt lived in the house and took care of it. Then we would go back to vacation and they would move to the back house and we would pay them to do laundry and cook while we were there.
