Love it. One of my previous bosses sold her very successful restaurant at age 75. She didn't actually make much on the sale, she had leased the restaurant and 20 year lease ran out. But she had saved her money and worked about 80+ hours a week. She had worked her butt off her whole life and was a widow. She met a really nice guy with his own money and a nice Trimaran a d his own house. She bought a 50 ft catamaran and sails all over the Caribbean Florida and Bahamas now. Their boats are tied up at the dock behind his house during hurricane season. She was the best boss I've ever had and I'm happy for her. I went to work every day to do the best job I possibly could for her and anything I could do to make thins run smoother for her I did. And she paid me well. I was 10-30 years older than most of her employees and she would put new employees with me and tell them "if you can keep up with that old overweight guy, I'll be impressed" By the end of the day they were crying like babies, while I wax running around at losing time with a smile on my face.

You had a very successful business in a high paying field of work. That and the fact you lived a modest lifestyle and worked for a goal got you in the place you are. You offer great advice for everyone here but we need to keep a little perspective. The average joe would have to live in a tent and ride a bicycle to work and not have kids to be able to save a large amount of money in today's world. I am glad your hard work paid out for you. My wife and I started a business 13 years ago in the healthcare field and put everything we had into it. It has bleed us dry and if we had never started it we would have been able to retire many years ago . We both had high paying jobs and saved a lot of cash that has since been run through so it takes more than hard work and saving to get places. A little luck is also required.

Dave Ramsey says “ live like no one lives, so you can live like no one lives”. He teaches Financial Peace University and has a radio show. Keith, you are an inspiration, and you give excellent advice. People want to have it all and buy the big house, big car/truck, boat, etc and having all these payments robs them of a great financial future. Your kids will do well in life because of your philosophy. I’ll never be able to sail, ( but I have Disability issues) and I can do it vicariously through you guys. Love your videos. Thanks.

@@charonstyxferryman I agree with that. I certainly am not implying that a boss is beyond reproach and I've had supervisors like that myself. I was curious as well as to how you guys afford your lifestyle, but at the end of the day it’s not my business, and it’s certainly not not anyone’s place to assume anything. This might be my favorite video to date! Keith, you almost described my life as well, I too dug ditches and did directional drilling. The one difference, I was selling the equipment to dig those ditches and drill those holes. I started working with my Dad as a young boy, when my Dad bought a used trencher and had a trenching service during the Summer and on Weekends when he was out of school. (He was a teacher) That led to becoming a Ditch Witch Dealer in Amarillo and then in North Carolina. I retired after 48 years in the Ditch Witch Business. (I’m 64) As for your money talk, this V-Log should be required watching for every person coming out of a High School and College. And should be required follow up afterwards throughout life. I just wish I had heard this when I was younger, I did good, I live well and have financial security, but, oh what I could have had! Great job Keith and great job Renee with the pop ups! And great work on your editing. At least now I know why I have a connection to you guys and enjoy watching Zatara! 👍

Well said. I changed my attitude and direction using a simple statement. When asked "Who I work for", my answer became "ME" This allowed me to set up a different lifestyle and I became a lot happier with where I was and now where I am. I do have a boat, a reasonable size for our needs and enjoy getting out. Life is what we make of it. If it is cars and houses, so be it, if it is boating and cruising, great!! So enjoy your freedom, You made it happen! PAH

It can give one freedom, when one handles money and the responsibility it brings - at any end of the spectrum. I am not sure if or how safe banks are these days. The odd thing about the banking systems is that for some reason they keep printing debt. They have to do this, because once they stop, the show is over and then we see a crash - though we might be in a slow economic "crash" at the moment, it may rapidly accelerate if Italy goes down or even just one bank, like Deutsche bank, goes down. They will likely try to hide DB's losses for a few more months (lets say 9 to 24), with its merger to another imploding bank - yeah!? Credit Unions may be slightly safer, though they are dealing under the same system - for the most part.

Just yesterday I have talked with my coleague (a person that I pay monthly and am supposed to call an employee, but it it is offensive for me to call him that) and asked him if he is happy. He said that there is nothing he would change and that he is grateful for the job. What I told him is that I am grateful that we can share work together and grow together because he can share his youth and enthusiasm and I can share experience and knowledge. And yesterday we have had a celebration for his new working papers, better working conditions, less hours so he can spend more time with his wife (they are expecting soon ❤️). He booked more work, worked harder than ever, stayed after hours on his own, and had a smile on his face. So did I. And so I can save more, work more, earn more and get close to my dream sooner. Respecting the people that work with you helps both sides ❤️

I give mad props and much love to your family. Right now, as in like the past year, I personally am experiencing having money for the first time IN MY LIFE and A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE TALKING.... but let me share with you. I was a widow at 30, single mom on welfare at the methadone clinic.... and met my current husband 2 years ago this month IN LINE AT A HOMELESS SHELTER!!!! We clearly had both fell on hard times, fell in with the wrong people. But my husband started our business with nothing but a box of donated hand tools riding the bus and now A YEAR LATER, we have: a refurbished, lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee and we pull an enclosed trailer behind us contains a FULL mechanic shop complete with air compressor and generator and every tool you can imagine! We own our own thriving business repairing boats, trucks, equipment, etc. and have a large client base and steady work, TWO boats (a small cruiser and a 31 foot yacht that we are fixing up and plan to move onto when our apartment lease is up) and we travel and have thousands saved in the bank.... SO ANYONE CAN DO IT!!! Granted my husband has a very high demand skill set, but that means just get u one- education is FREE he didn’t go to school for that- he learned it on his own beginning through this grandfather. So someday we also plan to do what your family is doing. Right now we are going to be living on a powerboat, but a sailboat is next on my list of toys. And you know how we get all of our stuff? Free or really cheap and then we fix it up! Blood, sweat and tears- LITERALLY!!! And yes people talk, but they don’t know the real story so ignore the negative nancys of the world! I admire what you guys are doing and you are a great inspiration to me and my family! LOVE U GUYS!!!

What a wonderful breath of fresh air from Capt Keith, it's refreshing to have someone so basically honest to say it how it should be said, a lot of people can't handle the basic's Capt, (that's why there's a few negatives) - a lot of armchair sailor's can't understand that they are doing exactly what they wanted to do, sit at home doing nothing more than commenting on people who got off their arse's and did it! They simply can't understand that cruisers had exactly the same breaks as everyone else, they just chose to use the breaks differently - you CAN'T spend your money twice! My little boat is nowhere near as big or as beautiful as Zatara, but it is what I can both afford and handle single handed, but even my modest vessel meant that I don't drive a big fancy car or slash out on every luxury me, or my other half want, and most of the 'want' is only a fad - latest phone, hair-do, holiday, etc. that a bit of forward thinking would have shown how shallow it really is. I take my hat off to you sir for not going down the patron route, I get annoyed that people set out to do what they want to do, but want other people to pay for it. May I wish you and your adorable family the very best fortune in your endeavours, may you enjoy fair winds. I follow your adventures with enthusiasm. Bon Voyage Capt. George (UK)

"I'm not gonna work for the American Dream because it's BS to me! I'm gonna work for my freedom and so I can do the things I wanna do." Word. Great perspective. "Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do." It makes it way cooler that you saved up to do this and earned it through honest work. Good for you.

@codylapoint

I believe he was referring to the American dream in its most commonly used sence. The house, car, 2.3 kids, and Thanksgiving at grandma's every fall. He wasn't shitting on the country, just the supposed path everybody is herded down. He did well because he's a likeable guy, he talks with confidence and intensity, and has the skills to keep his word and commitments.
@ratj4715
@ratj4715 4 года назад
Jacob Lapoint Am heard other things he has said to make me believe something else. And he did do all of that before he did this. Did you see the house he live it before this boat. And am sure he wasn’t driving a ford cruse around. And you know nothing about him just like I don’t. He shows you what he wants just like all of these channels. I didn’t hear him say any of what you think he meant I can just go by what he said and not just on this video. He talk his political views before this about this country. Sounded like he wanted to get out away from it. He sounds angry to me and I don’t get why.
@codylapoint
@codylapoint 4 года назад
@@ratj4715 I think he is conservative minded politically, as am I. Which probably assimilates to why his views and beliefs don't bother me, and why I don't see anything wrong with what he said. I don't care how big the neighbors house is, and I don't care how hot the neighbors wife is, and I don't care how big his bank account is. I care about what I want out of life and what I have to do to get where I want to be. Taking calculated risks is part of it, sometimes it pays off and alot of times it doesn't. People tend to overestimate thier abilities, and underestimate everyone else's. That mindset will just make you bitter and fail at your goals more oftenthan not.. Staying within your means applies to everyone in all aspects of life not just financially but socially, physically, and mentally (except our worthless government). You'll make it a lot further in life once you learn that you are 100% responsible for you. Its nobody else's fault that you can't afford a catamaran or whatever lifestyle you want, and its not mine or Keith's either. If you're in a dead end job with no hope of the financial future you want downsize your life and expenses. Learn to do something that will get you where you want to be financially, and then put in the actual work required to become one of the best at whatever it is you decide to do. Half assed effort will net you a half assed life. Hard work and dedication, and determination won't guarantee you a successful future, but it will greatly increase your chances. Sitting around blaming your parents, your race, your boss, your wife, and whoever else is just telling everyone that you can't mentally overcome the setbacks life deals all of us. Unless you're phisically or mentally disabled there is no reason you can't have what he has or more if you want it granted you've got the stones to get the work done, and the ability to nurture and build relationships with people who can help you get there.

Jacob Lapoint He can think what he wants but than don’t flash the flag around like you care because you don’t. And he did owed that mansion and he did have kids he live the American dream this country made that possible for him. Too many people in this country are angry with it and I don’t understand that way of thinking it what you make of it. So many people want this country to burn to the ground and to me that pretty sad way to live life. Their is no where else I rather be but in this country. And these are the same people telling others to leave it.

We have two Mercedes.. Both 1999. One SLK 230 and the other CLK320. They run great. Have no intention of getting rid of them anytime soon. I was homeless growing up as a child. Left home at age 11. Became a ward of the state at age 13 and ran away from the Youth Shelter and lived in a Rock Island Box car until I was 22. I have a book called "Estoppels" biography. Money goes to helping homeless shelters. I don't keep a dime. Took my GED and went to college. Today I own a software company, hold over 150 patents globally and have products manufactured in 5 countries and sold in 77. Just granted a new patent last week. My wife and I are retiring in 5 years and buying a 60' Catamaran so you're an inspiration to me. You live the life I wanted.

Keith, great GREAT comments. Thank you for sharing them. By the way, my wife and I are new to your channel, but were huge fans already. Can't wait to see where you go in the Med. Also interested in how sailing and harboring are different or unique in the Med. When I was young (in high school) a group of us sailed around Greece, Turkey, Malta, and Italy for 2 summers. Best time of my life and I LOVE the sailing life. However, my wife doesn't have sailing in her blood, she's definitely not a fan of monohull living, bu she is an adventurous traveler and willing to try sailing. I think the cat is my solution to get her 'on board' with an experience like yours. Can't wait to see more, and see how cat sailing/living are different.

I don't comment often, but I have been watching your adventures for a year or better and I gotta say I loved this video. Thank you for your honesty, it took me 40 years to see these things you have talked about. Although both my parents and my grandparents set very clear examples of how it works, none of them ever sat me down and had a talk, explained to me what to do or how to do it. Unfortunately I went down a very different path of life than my parents or grandparents did, starting before I even graduated high school. Even when my kids were growing up and heading out on their own I had no real idea how to guide them. Anyway, we finally stumbled upon Dave Ramsey through our church a few years ago. Since then we have tried to get it together, we have managed to get mostly out of debt, besides the mortgage, but it is so much harder now that we are so much older and living on a fixed income and raising four of our grandchildren. But we keep pushing forward, your videos are an inspiration to me! Happy sailing and God's blessings!

Disagree on one point. You did work for the American dream. The real one. The one that brought my great grandfather to the US. The one I served for and left the US for a good number of years for. The dream that states you have the right to Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Well done by the way.

I've seen people of many different ages work very hard to get to where they are...only to have family responsibilities/health issues for them or a family member change everything in a blink of an eye. Life is a limited time offer make the most of it and enjoy...

This video is all about freedom, real freedom, how to attain it and not get trapped by the American Dream of “freedom” where you running just to stay on the same spot and materialistically competing with others to feel validated by society. Real freedom is when your not endlessly working to pay bills to sustain yourself. It’s all about self sufficiency! Great video, down to earth relatable folks and very inspirational!

I really like this video. You and I have the same mindset when it comes to education and making money. I myself barely graduated high school and worked my way up the corporate ladder. My family and I were part of the rat-race and decided to swim against the current. We paid off our debt in 2016, saved money through 2017 and moved out to the carribean in 2018 and have been living out here since. My wife stopped working full time and enjoys the flexibility of her new part-time business . Our teenage son feels like he has more freedom and enjoys homeschooling. I myself am working part time and enjoy spending most of my time with the family. We made sacrifices, but they paid off. I say life is a give-n-take. In order to enjoy the things you want, you have to sacrifice in other areas. We have no regrets and plan on living this lifestyle until our mom’s need taking care of. Thank you guys for your videos... keep it up!!

Human meat has been found ( not a rare incident ) in ground up meat. The Elite know most are to weak to give up attractive foods and poison those. The biggest wealthiest of all corporations are Big Pharma. All oil and gas don't come close to the sick care industry of Big Pharma.

I like this. Concise. I think there's a lot of people trying to do a lot of different things in this world, and I always think to myself, "There is a sequence of steps to accomplishing literally anything we wish to do, and the first step is always to learn the steps." Now, I hear a lot of people say, "work hard", "do your best" and "achieve your potential". One key thing to ask oneself is "am I seeking happiness?" A person does not necessarily need to work hard, do their best or achieve their potential to be happy. The happiest guy I know rides a bicycle from his trailer to a plastics factory. Happiness (or unhappiness) isn't the result of what happens to us, but our interpretation of what's happening to us. Even money doesn't buy happiness (as we"ve all heard before), but it does buy a bit of comfort. No one wishes to suffer. I personally live what I call the "Plateau" analogy. I busted my ass early on and got to a comfortable place. Now I stroll across flat ground with a pretty decent view. I'll never have the view from the peak, but I also don't have to climb my whole life. Also,,, anyone who reaches the summit, inevitably has one direction left to go. We are extremely impressed with your set up! Not the boat. I mean, yeah, it's gorgeous! More so the lifestyle with kids. Although we do not choose to raise ours on a boat, I can easily imagine doing what you're doing. As an airline captain and high school principal, our plan is to play the "American Dream" game until our kids head off, then cash it out for boat life. We'll even keep our lake cabin in MN like you have your place in MT! All in all, I don't think anyone should compare or judge. What you're doing is no doubt inspirational. Thank you for putting in the work to make the videos and sharing your life with us! We all enjoy your videos. Ours aren't a fraction as interesting, but we would be honored if you ever took a look. As you watch us, know that on our TV in the background is you! ❤ ~ Josh
