"Feminine intuition" has been ridiculed for its sensitivities and accurate prophecies. A particularly sensitive woman, "the Vision-ary," is often considered mad by those who need to hold on to conventional ways of understanding or living the status quo, as we will see in Chapter 9. In past centuries, the Visionary was persecuted as a witch by patriarchal governments and religions when she op posed societal norms and rules or practiced family or folk medicine.
Society still today often denigrates the mystical person as impractical and foolish, or even crazy. Yet the inner light of the Visionary can lead us into our own spirituality and guide us through the wilderness of our unknown inner lives. In our technological age of conquest and control, we need the Visionary's insights more than ever, to see a way to rebuild our society, now on the brink of destruction, in accord with the ways of Nature. Indeed, many of the Madwomen of mythology are Nature goddesses who warn of the dire consequences of living out of balance with the natural world and of disrespecting its procreative, destructive, and regenerative powers.
The mythologies of many cultures are replete with archetypal images of the creative and destructive Madwoman, showing the universality of her presence in the human psyche and of our experience of her forces. In the Hindu pantheon, Kali, the great mother of time, is the goddess of both creation and destruction. Black as night, illuminated by the moon, blood upon her lips, Kali dances wildly on the corpses of the dead, surrounded by wailing female spirits. In her four arms she holds the sword and trident, a lotus, and a pot of honey, while she wears a necklace of heads and a belt of human hands. Kali chooses the souls who will be released to know eternal bliss. And she gathers the seeds for creating new life.
