I’m 43... Every home I lived in I’d painted the walls white. Every apartment in nyc had the walls white. I don’t know how this is a new thing and specially I don’t agree when people say that “fixer upper” made white walls a trend. White walls is just a classic. I can’t imagine any other color on my walls.
Not so common in india but I painted our walls white with an accent wall in grey colour... It makes it look so beautiful😍💓... Every decor looks much beautiful against white... And silver looks good aginst grey...
I'm your age plus 20. Our 60's - 80's houses were Antique White (safe boring beige). To me white is still a breath of fresh air that makes any decor possible
I had such trouble getting the right white but I just figured it out! I have honey colored hardwood floors that reflect yellow and I'm in sunny florida with tons sunlight and green outside (plus a key west exterior) that also reflects and changes the paint. I painted my LR 6 times before finally using ceiling white on the walls. It looks so good! I was sitting on my sofa and thought occured to me "I really like the color of the ceiling". Bingo!
When we moved in our house years ago , I painstakenly painted each room a different shade of white- I just loved it!! Then my sister showed up and said " Hey, you're not the white room type" and we ended up repainting the entire interior different colors- that was great for awhile, but now I am noticing that room by room I am going back to white_ I love it for all the reasons you said.
When you say to paint everything white, do you use the same white for ceiling, walls, and trim? if so, do you use different sheens for each? We have a new build in the process, Im trying to decide on paint. :) Thank you! Probably paint the entire house the same throughout for cost efficiency, so thinking white. Thanks!
Thanks for the video although I wish you had done this 1 year ago. I painted my entire condo a bright white, top to bottom. I have never regretted it. Your video would simply have given me the confidence I needed at the time. You are always a breath of fresh air and I so look forward to your videos.
You are so correct about making sure you have the RIGHT tone of white. In 2012 we purchased new construction with bright white flat builder paint(they do that to disguise any imperfections in the walls). We lived with it for about 4 years. I felt like i was totally ahead or on trend lol. When we finally decided to paint we toned down the color of white to Dove White which is so much softer of a color but still white. We were living in South Florida too with tons of light from outside but that builder white was very sterile. Now I'm using a very cream color in my bedroom with white bedding and it all looks so clean, fresh, but calming. Thanks! I'm loving your channel!!!
I live in a high rise in Midtown Atlanta & the natural lighting in here changes all day. After a lot of trial & error I have found that Benjamin Moore’s Paper White is just about a perfect white in staying true to its tone. Also the sheen can really effect the color in places with a lot of direct sunlight. I do eggshell on walls & satin for the trim. For me it’s not too reflective or too matte. Thanks again for another great video! (I could talk about white walls all day LOL)
In 2018 I found myself moving onto my childhood home (parents passed) and it needed renovating. Mom had off white walls when we were small but since had every room painted a pastel. I decide to use SW High Relective White (which is a great neutral clean white) on the board & baton my husband designed for me…also on all the trim/doors. Then I chose a White Hummus from Behr for the walls. It opened up this tiny house. Another trick to make it seem larger is to have one flooring through out the house. We’re building a new home soon & definitely doing the same paint choices.
I’m Danish and I’ve just painted two of my walls a light “greige” colour and felt very bold doing so 😂 the rest of my walls are white, my family members’ homes have only white walls and I think all of my friends have just white walls too 🤔 it’s so common and is the save and basic choice in this part of the world. What you said about decorating with textures (and to some extent pops of colour - many prefer a very neutral colour palette and use plants as “pops”) is very true. It’s clear that you have lived here 😜
White walls were seen as unfinished, what the builders left behind before you decorated. For decades 'magnolia', a very yellow cream, was the neutral of choice. It's still used a lot in rentals in the UK.
Bought a foreclosure. It had some wacky colors. After the reno I painted the whole house white. What a difference! The space seems twice as big. OK, I did knock a few walls down and took down a cabinet or two. To balance out all the white I took inspiration from sea glass. I live by the water. I comprised a color palette from only the colors of sea glass I had collected over the years.
I have painted every room in my home white. I love it! My favorite white colors are White Opulence and Chantilly Lace. Also, being a realtor, the correct white reigns supreme.
Thank you for this information and I love your videos. Please post everyday, you have great content. I am drawn to French country interiors without the ruffles if you need ideas. Thank you for your ideas and friendly personality. I look forward to your post, may God bless your family and business.
I wall papered my master bedroom with a very subtle patterned white wallpaper and the woodwork painted all white. My bed linens and decorated pillows were all white with just a few pops of a pale blush. My furniture was a mahogany four poster bed and the flooring was a champagne color wall to wall. Since my bedroom was on the main floor and people could peak into my room going to the powder room, I received so many compliments and I loved it so!
I am so glad I found you, has started to renovate, our home Ireland, your tips going to help a lot. Your home is inspiration to me even is 100 times bigger then ours😉😁😍
I have painted my home pure white, sherwin williams and it is brighter, fresh, clean and pleasing but in the basement Eider white to make that area cozy. Love the tips!
I have white walls and I love it. We have a small house and I too love pops of color and lots of texture. We were inspired by spending lots of time in Finland, Sweden and Denmark.
Tips: 1. TESTING: When painting white samples on dark walls spray a larger area with a can of Kills Primer to neutralize the existing color. The spray primer stays fresh for future use and it drys super fast so you can get your sample paints up quickly. The primer prevents bleed through of the existing color. 2. ADJACENCY: The primer can also give you a neutral field on which to compare colors. Adjacent colors viewed together push each other in the opposite direction on the color wheel. For example, if you paint a white swatch on a blue wall the swatch will appear warmer as an adjacent color, but you may be surprised that the same white paint feels cooler when the whole room is painted in the swatch color. Make sure you have a good amount of neutral white around each swatch when you are making your choice. You can also use adjacency contrast to influence perception of the wall color by using cool furniture, textile and accessory accents to make the wall color feel warmer. I have used this adjacency to make old prints look less yellowed by hanging them on a warm white wall. A cool white wall would have made the yellowed prints look harsh. 3. REFLECTED COLOR: Incandescent and LED lighting 3,000K will increase the warmth of white walls. Daylight and 2,500K LED lighting will make walls look cooler. White walls with very slight tints will look like the tint is more intense in corners where the white wall paint reflects on itself. Make sure you look at your swatch samples with different types of daylight and the lighting you intend to use when choosing. 4. AGE: White paint tends to oxidize to appear warmer. If you buy the exact same paint color and you take it home and it does not match your walls at home, don't panic. Just repaint whole walls sections to inside corners and noone will be able to see the difference. The same paint will look different every time light hits it at a different angle. Hope this helps.
I painted my condo in Florida all white. I really like it. A designer really tried to discourage me but I saw all of the Pinterest white walls so I went for it. Everything had been builder beige, the white brightened up the space.
Hello beautiful! I love, love, love your walls! Mine are dark plum, chocolate accents with a neutral tan. That's what so wonderful about paint opposed to wallpaper. You can change the color quickly and inexpensively. Thanks so much for these amazing tips!😊
I painted my living and dining room with vaulted ceiling a flat white. I wanted to mimic a museum look to show off all my daughter’s large artwork. I have never been sorry. Love it and thank you for your great suggestions!
This video is my sanity. I love white walls and have been trying to avoid the comments regarding the coldness. I have decided to paint it white and add some pop of colours and textures as you suggested.
Thanks so much!! I'm about to paint my living room, we are redoing it & this is so helpful. I hope to sent you pictures soon. lots of love from the windy city.
Our last home had smooth bright white walls, and I felt so happy inb that house - so BEAUTIFUL, I just LOVED it! We are currently building our new house, and I want it ALL white again, and accessorize with plants, and earthy neutral colors, wood, etc. Thank you for these tips 😊🌷
Love white walls! I am painting my home all white🤗 I love the Scandinavian designs! To me is so clean looking and relaxing. I’m a realtor in the Orlando, FL area by the way🤗 Your home is lovely 😍
Great video! Thanks for this so much. I just bought an old farmhouse (my FIRST HOME!). It's a duplex so I get to paint my new home and my new rental and neutrals are the name of the game. I'm so looking forward to some nice fresh white walls.
How did you know!? My husband built a wall for our basement...happy dance. Presently he is sanding the sparkle and the next, you guessed it we will be shopping fir white paint! Thanks for your timely and informed guidance.
I love this video White is my favorite color and I did a coconut white everywhere in my last house and I think that’s the longest I’ve kept a color on the walls. Like you said it was perfect backdrop for the changes.
I'm 72yo and white walls are classic, always have had them in my homes with accents of other colors (only in the bathrooms/laundry room) . Stark white for me is too, well .... stark! My current home I have used Behr Belgium Cream w/primer. I use Satin on the walls and ceilings (vaulted) and Semi-gloss on doors, moldings and baseboards. It's a comfortable white since it has a "pink" base but it doesn't read as pink in my space. Its easy to keep clean as well. I'm moving into a much larger home with 14-15 ft ceilings and I'm thinking of using the same color the same way but add different accent color. I've enjoyed watching your RU-vid vids - thank you!
Ooh I'm early!! One thing I learned the hard way:: This should go without saying but make sure your walls are in good shape before you paint. Even the most expensive paint looks mediocre at best if the walls are in poor shape. I will be repainting my town home white but 1st those walls are need to be sanded and nail pops fixed and seems dry wall seems fixed before any paint ever goes on.
I know im asking randomly but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost my password. I would love any assistance you can give me
(MaryJo Stanley) I Love this video!!! I moved into my new construction home less than a year ago. The inside of my whole house is painted white. I Love It! I have hardwood and tile floors throughout. The hardwoods are a medium brown tone with gray undertones. I love mixing light and dark tones together. I agree with you on the fact there are many shades of white paint. I like you prefer the brightest true white. My friend has the same floor plan as myself. Her walls are gray. I am amazed how much brighter and cheery my house is. Lastly, the white walls help the fact that my house does not have lots of natural sunlight. I prefer Sherman Williams "High Reflective White".
Michael Stanley it’s so fun when you can see what a color looks like in someone else’s! My neighbor has my floor plan and she did agreeable gray and it’s beautiful and so her!
I’ve painted the walls in our 1970s ranch-style house a light greige because I feel like it helps bridge the age of the home with the more modern aspects of my style and my need for coziness without a lot of stuff. Having said that, I’ll probably paint the common areas a white color when we sell in a few years because I do think it will make the house seem larger to potential buyers... gotta make that $$! 😉😂
We are in the process of building a home and right now in our apartment we have the most gorgeous peacock blue on the walls but we are going boldly white in our new home! I do love the color though so we will be using peacock accessories and throw blankets to bring in texture. Now if I could just find chairs to go with the dining table we just bought...
Thanks for the tips Valentina! I am building a new home and plan on going with white walls. Question: If you are using the same color white for walls, trim and baseboards, should you do the walls matte and the trim gloss--and what about the ceiling?
Peggy Anglin that’s what most people do but ya know I like to break some rules so I paint it ALL matte because I love the chalky natural feel it gives to everything 😊
I always loved white wall. I am from Brasil and we usually don’t use too much colors inside. There is here and there an accent wall, bricks wall, cement, wall with texture, wood etc. When I moved to US I got used to it after a while. In my apartment we have white and black accent walls. I love the black accent walls so much in contrast with the white wall 😊🖤🤍
Bonjour Valentina, I am loving this video, you gave great tips. Getting ready to paint this coming spring and it will be white, therefore this video was very informative. Again, thank you and have a great week-end.
Thank you for this video! Can u possibly do a video how to transition style? Such as currently I have rustic farmhouse and I would like to bring more Scandinavian. I have dough bowls from pottery barn and galvanized lanterns that are some of my favs. I hope this makes sense I just would like to do more of that style but don’t know where to start or what main pieces I should get, etc.
LivNtheBESTLife I’d love to! Can you send pictures to Info@houseofvalentina.com ? We are going to do a new video series where we give advice and I’d love to include your home if you are interested!
Valentina !!! Is Polar Bear comparable to Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace for LRV, Value, Hue and Chroma? I want to do a all white house and love my B.M. Ulti-Matte!
Fav white paints: Benjamin Moore: Paper White for the whole house (minus bedrooms) has a very slight hint of gray. The cool white is a perfect complement to our stained trim. Benjamin Moore: White Dove. LOVE this color on our Kitchen cabinets. And it still pops against the paper white on our walls. White Dove is a more creamy classic white. We are looking forward to changing our Master to white and I'll be trying Chantilly Lace (BM) and Decorators White (BM) as samples on our wall. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Colors in our bedroom tend to read bluer than what they really are because of the son that pours in from the East. Our wall is grey but reads blue grey in the morning.
Loved this video! We just painted most of our rooms Greek Villa from SW. I have to say choosing the right white was a process of elimination. I ordered several shades I liked from Samplize so I was able to move them to a lot of areas to make my final decision. I do have to say your house was my inspiration! We went from a dark moody gray to all white! What a shocker. We are getting new white kitchen cabinets and along with the white I am using Iron Ore (black) for my kitchen walls, powder room and carried it into the great room, painting the mantel and built in s cabinetry back. Right now we are in the throws of the remodel, but I’m excited to start putting the rooms together! I am not a designer so that will be challenging. 😰 I do have to say my husband said no white in our master, so I went with Mega Greige and it looks great. You have been such an inspirational me in this process, so thank you for sharing such wonderful ideas with us! ❤️
Sharon Traywick yay!!!! This makes me SO happy!! You are going to LOVE the next video about white walls!! Let’s just say that Greek villa might be among my favorites! 🇬🇷
Being ex-military(wife), the 1st thing we changed were those white walls, but now, I couldn't imagine my home w/o them! Like u said, it's all abt layers, light & the color u choose. My daughter thought I lost my mind bc I didn't wanna paint anything. We're finished decorating now & she actually likes it too. She, however, chose a different route in her home. ;-)
Super Annie Oakley my daughter started the white walls! And then our son and then I couldn’t help joining in. Our youngest will probably get a green room when it’s just him though 😊 💚
Do you recommend painting the ceilings with stock white ceiling paint or the same colors as the wall. I'm planning to use a slightly warm white paint. I also need to paint doors. Thanks!
Im for white paint...bcz i love the way the furniture accessories plants just look beautiful and stand out...but finding one reminds me of the chore i hated as a kid..lol
I would like to paint most of the interior walls of our fairly large house of 8,000 SF under roof, in ONE white paint color, to make it easy to touch up when needed. However, what color goes well EVERYWHERE, including in the darker or lighter rooms? I'm so CONFUSED! Thank you Valentina - I LOVE your show!!! 🌻
Good tips! Especially noting the exterior influence. I'm in Northern California in the forest. I could not find a white that didn't turn yellow grungy greenish hue because of the green trees surrounding the house. I ended up with BM Classic Grey, a beautiful soft white, depending on light sometimes grayish sometimes beige. It seems to be a perfect color as we are preparing to list the house.
Love your videos.. we chose shoelace from behr. It's not a white white. I love the look of white but was afraid it would be too stark. Hope i dont regret it.
Great video. I'm really struggling to choose a white for my bedroom (and eventually the rest of the condo which is only 749 sq ft). I'm on the 4th floor of a condo building and while I have huge glass doors in my bedroom that lead out to a spacious patio, the room faces north so I don't get great light. My bedspread is gray and I use crisp white sheets. I built my 6' H x 8" W headboard and closet barn door myself and both are modern and painted ultra pure white. I want to use a white that has just a hint of color and I was thinking Benjamin Moore Decorators White which has a hint of gray but I'm really torn. Should I go for a warmer tone since I have medium wood floor and or should I go with a pure white like Chantilly Lace? Choosing a white is REALLY TOUGH! I want to carry the same color through the condo with the black counters marble backsplash and espresso colored cabinets in the kitchen which is open to the rest of the space. I wish there was a Swiss Army Knife of whites that could look good in every setting.
Our first house was built in St Louis in 1991, and the whole house was painted Dover White from Sherwin Williams. At that point in my life I didn’t want white walls and had my dad paint most of the walls in a khaki color. 😃
Love white walls, they blend well with modern lofts. You mentioned you picked the most pure white for your walls. What is it??? I want to use a very pure white on my walls
Every paint line will have a "color" or base that has zero pigment - no touch of yellow, blue, green etc. Just ask the dealer what that color is for their brand
I know this is an older video but we just bought a house that I want to paint and white is what I am leaning toward. Anyway my question is what do you think about a white wall with an even whiter trim?
For a sun blast southern facing open kitchen/dining/living with wainscot/crowns, a honey dark brown chimney, and yellowy counter, what BM whites would you use. My glass doors are already painted Chantilly Lace Semi-Gloss. I assume should stick with Chantilly for the wainscot/crown. I've been eyeing White Dove or Chantilly for ceiling or White Dove Ceiling/walls. How about sheens for this sunny space?....I'm all ears for other advice as well....TIA...
I want to know about sheen as well. So Val does matte. Others do eggshell walls and satin trim OR satin walls and semi gloss trim. Ceiling usually flat but could go eggshell. Chantilly lace my choice
Thank you! If I paint the baseboards the same white, do I still use a different sheen? I have wainscoting on my walls,do I paint the mill work in satin and the wall in eggshell?
Hi. I found this video very helpful and I also checked out the part 2 video. I still want to post my question here and gain your advice. I have a property that has very dull (white lights) to no natural lighting. In order to make the place look a bit more cheery, I want to look into painting the walls either in Simply white - benjamin more or whispering white - BHER. I would like your advice on which color to use that has white LVTs with grey to slight yellow undertones?
This is SO timely for me. When we bought our home 4 years ago, I bought a great gray and painted my common area and a warmer gray went into my family room. What I didn't take into serious consideration, was how little natural sunlight I get in my common area. I love the on-trend gray, in theory (it really is a great gray), but for my space, even after changing our bulbs a couple of times, it's time to go. Just last month I sat hubby down and said, "honey, I want to paint all of our walls in these common areas white." He doesn't know much about interior design, but his eyes bugged out still at the suggestion, Lol. This is the change I need. We need to bring in fresh and brightness into those areas that I haven't been able to re-create with the absence of windows. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
What's your opinion on painting walls and trim the same color but in different sheens? Also I'm painting a bedroom with lowlight and a lot of green outside - I haven't swatched yet but am considering Simply White, Swiss Coffee, and Marshmallow. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Hi, we are renovating and we just picked a white for our walls. We actually picked flat and now I see you suggest matte. Will that make a big difference?
Sherwin Williams Extra White. The only builder options were Alabaster (yellow), Pure White (a little tan), and Shoji (really tan). Extra White was the trim. We asked if it could be the wall color and luckily they said yes! Its an industrial inspired space with concrete and metal and the contrast with Extra White is go great. the others are nice Whites, but just not for this style space.
I just found your channel and looooove it! We live in Alpharetta as well. So...my hubby won't do white walls but I'm hoping to convince him. Do you think like anything else white walls will be a trend/fad? Also, Is it ok to have a pure white trim...our is Extra White by SW which I love and then choose a different white for your walls. So basically, the wall white won't match the trim white. I'm thinking the extra white might be too stark but haven't tested it yet. Love it on the trim but scared to put it on the walls. The back side faces north the front faces south and we do get decent light...aka Georgia, but the lot is surrounded by trees as well..so not a ton of light all day. Thanks so much!!
