Shortly after the sun set we found ourselves driving with the Afghani mountains towering over us to the right across the river/border. We struggled up a loose, rocky surface that was once a complete road and stopped for the night. Shortly after setting up we were "checked on" by some Tajik soldiers who then proceeded to wake us up the next morning to move us along.
A hard and rough morning of driving took us to Darvaz and some crystal clear but freezing cold glacial water where we freshened up and cracked on to Kalaikhum. We had had a tip off of somewhere we could rent some quad bikes and head up to an ancient palace in the mountains that was only discovered in 2012. A fun ride up and some stunning views completed what was a very cool 12 hours.
