Roadworks designed to make it easier for cars was in the end what did it for us! Some major potholes and a rather solid raised tarmac section crunched up our front left suspension to the point where we could no longer steer the car safely so we needed to some major surgery in the northern Kyrgyzstani city of Bishkek.
A full day of mechanic work and searching for parts in a car graveyard/bazaar did finally pay off as we were able to fix our exhaust problem (albeit for only a short time) and permanently fix our roof rack which was a huge relief. This meant we could push on for our single biggest driving leg so far... A non stop drive from the south of Kazakhstan to the capital in the north and across the Russian border.
We managed it with some tough all night driving 2 nights in a row but it meant that we had caught up and were back on track to get everyone on their planes in time! A beautiful few days in the Russian Altai region finally took us to where we had been dreaming of for the last 8 months... the Mongolian border.
