The legacy of the Soviet Union in Mongolia stretches from the bustling streets of the capital to the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert. From fighter-interceptor bases to entire armies numbering in the tens of thousands, Mongolia was responsible for preventing any catastrophic clashes between Beijing and Moscow.
But what remains today?

Passed through Mongolia a few years back on a Moscow/Beijing train journey. Didn't stop there, but what impressed me most about Ulaanbaatar were the yurts on the slopes of the hills surrounding the city. It felt very evocative - the old life and the new, two aspects of Mongolia in one place!
