Studies have shown that people walking in groups of 4 or more almost never experience a bear attack, which are rare to start with, if one occurs once a year in Western Canada that is a lot. When I walked this trail alone in the 1980's I was always "Bear Aware" and made lots of noise with bells or banging 2 rocks together as is recommended by bear experts, bear spray had not been invented yet, when I asked 2 cocky amateurish 20-something males right about where that sign now stands (it was not there back then) if they were concerned about bears, they laughed and jeered all the way past me for 15 minutes like I was talking about getting abducted by aliens on a UFO. Most people, especially amateurs, that I have met on trails have that same attitude.

@SC EM Oh, no! It should be enshrined! We have one and use it on a weekly basis. Great kitchen tool. Ever had crock chops? Coupla pork chops, a can of creme-o-mushroom soup and some tater tots on slow simmer for a few hours? I drool to think of it.
