The reason the second set and most of the third set is missing is because brilliant NBC didn't want to preempt golf so they sped up coverage and skipped that part.
I remember watching this match live. I was on pins and needles. I was rooting for Seles so hard. When she was making her comeback in the 3rd set I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, she couldn't quite seal the deal. However, the point that begins at 10:39 will always go down as one of my favorite Monica Seles rallies. I love hearing the crowd's reactions in that point and completely love Monica's final smash to end the point. I miss her playing so much! She'll always be my favorite tennis player of all time.
Even after losing at Wimbledon to Graf, she showed true dignity, few on The WTA even seem to make eye contact, Seles was gracious in defeat. I'd give credit to Angelique Kerber, always courteous.
@foxyjohnuk Probably 15. She might have split slams with Graf 93-95 but she had all kinds of personal issues in 96-97 and she did not fare well at all vs the next generation players even taking into account her fitness/psych issues.
Monica was 30lbs overweight for most of 1997 and 1998, yet she was right there with the #1 player in the world. No one should dispute was a great TENNIS player Seles was.

She was a petulant spoiled brat with no manners who had great timing and movement, but could not withstand the brutal force that power hitters like Davenport and Capriati could impose. I'm not a Graf fan, but I was happy to see Graf win her last Slam at Hingis' expense. How's that for eating French red dirt!
@@joelm6276 I think Capriati was a little bit worse and brattier than Hingis . I seen her live and also Serena , and Jennifer C swore like a sailor and was never picked up on it between points.
Tennislovingcoffeeaddict best Hingis undoubtably better then post stabbing Seles, she can exploit Monica's lack of movement and resistance better then anybody. Monica either should have defended better or attacked with more powerful and deep shots
I remember this match too, it was just a week or two after Seles got waxed by Hingis like 6-0/6-0 in another tournament, and I was really proud of her for making it this close while feeling sick!
Jon Berg That awful match you've mentioned was the 2000 Miami semifinal. This match took place one week after the 1997 Miami final where Hingis won 6:2 6:1. A 6:0 first set for Seles would have been quite an appropriate response.
@@thebluedanube8463 Houston was one of the smaller ones. She never played the family circle cup, or the Bausch and Lomb in her peak years - both of those tournaments used to attract strong fields, whereas Houston was always a bit of a side show.
Poor Seles. Still had mighty groundstrokes at that point, but soooooooo out of shape for a world-class athlete. She looked like a stuffed sausage. So much talent but her movement and endurance were grievously compromised by the weight and her famed ability to close was affected, too. It’s obvious that the stabbing did a number on her psyche, longterm. Tragic. The unharmed Seles would have beaten Hingis 2 and 2 in this match.
