Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult son's. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

That question on right speech I recommend the Abhaya Sutta: To Prince Abhaya on access to insight's website. I commented a direct link but the algorithm probably removed it.

@chrisdon9360 has posed a good question. I, too, am curious about the answer from Ven. Phra Dan, for I ponder almost daily about the passing away, and as a matter of fact, I have already made my last will and testament to a trusted Theravada monastery. Well it is not that I am already old, and I know of no apparent deadly ailments in me, but there is a sutta, namely the Maranassati sutta, which deals with the importance of always having in mind the fact that death may strike at any time, and it is important to stress the urgency of practicing the Dhamma in its full extent as long as this precious human existence lasts, for being born as a human is an extremely rare thing to happen, and the most ideal state of existence to understand the teachings of Lord Buddha. The levels of existence above the human realm are too blissful to bother about how to get rid of dukkha, and those below the said realm are too pervaded with suffering so as to have the opportunity to think about how to get liberated from samsara.

Dear Phra Dan, did the Buddha have a sense of humour? Also, this morning I saw a funeral procession driving at walking pace down the road. I rarely think about death, even though I am no spring chicken, so it was a good reminder of impermanence. How often do you reflect on the inevitability of death in your practice?
@noonespecial4171

The 5 Remembrances Upajjhatthana Sutta, are recalled daily in the practice There are these five facts that one should reflect on often, whether one is a woman or a man, lay or ordained. Which five? "'I am subject to aging, have not gone beyond aging.' This is the first fact that one should reflect on often, whether one is a woman or a man, lay or ordained. "'I am subject to illness, have not gone beyond illness.' ... "'I am subject to death, have not gone beyond death.' ... "'I will grow different, separate from all that is dear and appealing to me.' ... "'I am the owner of my actions heir to my actions, born of my actions, related through my actions, and have my actions as my arbitrator. Whatever I do, for good or for evil, to that will I fall heir.' ... "These are the five facts that one should reflect on often, whether one is a woman or a man, lay or ordained. 🙏🙏🙏

There is some humor in the Suttas nothing overbearing though. Like how some asked they parents for permission to ordaine and them refusing, in response the person lay on the ground right there and saying" I'll not leave this spot till you give me permission or I die."

Can you please explain rebirth? Specifically if we have no soul what is it that is reborn? I have heard several people explain the difference between rebirth and reincarnation but I have never gotten a straight answer on exactly what is meant by rebirth. Thank you.

Hi there! Please allow me to share some thoughts about this topic, in the hope that Ven. Phra Dan may give an approval to it if they are correct. Well according to my understanding, basically we now are physical manifestations determined by an impersonal flow of kamma, the qualities of which are being continuously shaped by the different manifestations it takes through the samsaric journey. We are now humans with the capability to understand the Dhamma because the impersonal flows of kamma manifested in "us" happen to be of good quality, which means that before "us", some other manifestations of this flow ("past lives") did wholesome kamma. I usually practice gratitude each and every morning towards all beings who existed before "me" and who through their actions shaped the flow of kamma to materialize as the healthy and "smart" (I mean, I do not have down syndrome or any serious cognitive impairment which would prevent me from understanding the Dhamma) person I am now, and I also try to practice as much sila as possible in order to allow the next being to be born out of this flow of kamma now existing as "me" to have a good existence ('cause obviously I am still quite far from Buddhahood and final liberation from Samsara, so a rebirth will happen out of the kammic flow which is now being shaped by "me"). I just feel responsible for the next being to be born as a result of my actions, for if the preceding beings would have committed unwholesome kammas, then perhaps now I might have been existing as a fly, or even a dweller of the nether realms, and I would be unable to further practice Dhamma.

Thank you for the teachings, Phra Dan 🙏 🙏 I have a question: wondering if you have any advice regarding following "Right Speech" point? I find it difficult, especially when I'm tired or I get irritated by someone else's speeches and easily I become rude and unpleasant. I understand that needs to be changed, but these thoughts often come afterwards when the harm has already been inflicted. Do you have any advice how to be better prepared for these challenges?
