Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult sons. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

Dear People, It is a Skill, on what kind of questions to ask Bhante. There are questions which Buddha kept silent to. Likewise, Bhante does not need to answer all questions, questions which are irrelevant to The Practice, Enlightenment and Nirbana. This takes away His Focus. When we focus on Useful questions that serve the cessation of suffering, this truly helps us, and strengthen Bhante in His practice too.

Bhante what you encountered with that pedantic person is 'social media' ... this is precisely how it is on social media today, people have forgotten how to speak with other humans so it's now about a word and spending countless amounts of time making sure that one's definition is right, that they are wrong and on and on, and on. You are well out of it and missing absolutely nothing. The exact same that happens in Buddhist circles, online groups, even the larger Buddhist websites, its all the same, Buddhists, social media, only the content is different but the arguing is exactly the same. I wish you are blessed Vassa and that this Vassa you are well and are able to develop even deeper into Samadhi. Many blessings dear Bhante 🙏🙏🙏

How can people who are still stuck in the education system transition to a monastic life? What steps would you recommend for someone in this position to begin their journey towards becoming a monk?

This might be a silly question, but what about cutting grass? Like with a loan mower. There are whole bunch of insects that might be caught in it even tho there is no intention of hurting them. Would one that is keeping 5 precepts would just let the grass grow? 😅

Namo Buddhaya Guru, learned so much as always and if may I have some questions I met a sister recently we were talking about suffering and karma and she asks me a question " if this is all true then why should a child suffer, why should she beg to release her from suffering, why this need to happen to childrens", at that time I don't have an answer. I was stumbled by that question, Guru what will you answer if someone asked the same question and I went to Thailand recently, went to several Buddhists Temple, some of the Monks offer a ritual like "flower bath", they bring yarn give it to people to hold and chant, does it have any particular meaning? Thank you so much Namo Buddhaya

Thanks! I kinda don't disagree with anything you say. I mix it up, you do theravada, I hear what you say: Ah, thats theravada. Be liberated, do what you want. And how enjoyable! Not too many difficult words. You know Buddha liked janitor language, it is true. He wanted his methods to be accessible for the layman. Raining down from the cloud. You said Karma is action, thats very good, let them know. Because culture alleready know the mystic karma, they need enlightening grounding. However, for the longest time, I did not know that people still attained, or at the very least, have symptoms to the observers of attaining nirvana, or mahasamadhi, retracting the life force at will. Oh yeah, many such cases. Parmahamsa Yogananda did that, or at the most straight forward observation, allegedly told someone he was gonna do it, then performed a poem and died very short time after. Like, people might think: I know what you're doing: psychedelics! I am not against it, I like that people can get a taste. However VERILY beware, that high samadhi, maybe even a little bit spooky, or even exactly the same as famous psychedelics, can be attained through actually pretty basic accessible mindfullness and bodyscanning. Especially after working out, if you do yoga right before to stretch, yeah that can be a gateway experience. I am saying this as someone who did it with meditation, not ever having done a psychedelic substance. I have also done them, that too is okay. It's actually very good for quitting addiction, according to science. Believe in what you want. Faith and placebo is kinda magic, it clearly seems to outshine what we thought was "reality" in some studies.

Hello bhante, in meditation there are some part of my mind that want to strive for results, and another that wants me to quit sessions early for whatever reasons, should i just recognize these voices when they pop up and let them go? is overcoming them results in mind unification?

Thank you Bhante. I come from a christian background. I was meditating and heard the words "everything, changes second by second, I change, the chair changes etc. " So the idea of impermanence came to me without knowing the Buddhist idea of impermanence, many year ago. Moses when he received the 10 commandments asked God what manner of being are you? It stated I am what I am. Undefinable. There is a question about God the Buddha didnt answer? Seems a couple different versions. Im not knowledgeable enough to quote Buddha. It seems to me Christ kept teaching what you see is just an appearance and wisdom ( truth) comes from within. Does Buddhism talk about insight, does the Buddha talk about appearances might not being the true nature of things? Wont we be led to to the truth of Buddha's teachings simply because it is the truth? Regardless of background?
