The Monkees, appearing with host Tom Bergeron, on People Are Talking in August 1989. Here the band sings "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" Please visit my website at www.monkeesconc....
Peter does justice to Mike’s song, more than justice, he rocks it! Micky’s harmony and Davy’s unmistakable beautiful voice! And that kiss! Monkee brother love! RIP Manchester Cowboy
When Peter sang "..not with words, but just a kiss" Davy was being Davy and kissed him on the cheek. Peter was playing along by making that dreamy face. Those two are just loveable goofballs.
Holy crap! Peter not only casually pick the heck out of that. But that's are really good lead vocal. Sincere, warm. The vibe between the three of them is so pleasant.
RockingJamboree I have always felt a profound love of music---the great, great settling force---which made any and all "quibbles" about the "authenticity" of these talented chaps meaningless. These 4---now 3---were truly---GENUINE. They made a sad, troubled world happier, and bearable. I raise my hand to them: in salute. Thank you, for just helping to make the world a more tolerable, enjoyable space.
deniseg812 Yes, they met in the village (New York). Peter was told there’s another musician that looks like you and that was Stills. Then later in California, Stephen Stills auditioned for The Monkees and was turned down. When he was asked if he knew anyone who looked like him with better teeth and hair, he called Peter who almost didn’t go in.
Peter is admittedly the best musician of them all and even Mike said that! This is proof of just how well they sang! When you’re better live than on recordings, WOW!
Who would have thought a TV show created just to take advantage of the Beatles craze would have led to the formation of such a great band with 4 funny, talented musicians? Lifelong fan since 1967.
I’m in complete agreement with you! Even Mickey recently said he was musically the most talented of the 4 of them. You could put any instrument in front of him and he could play it! I don’t understand what the problem was with Mike and Peter. The others loved him though Mike did in his own way.
Davy actually was a drummer, but because of his short stature they were afraid he might look "swallowed up" by the kit. Mickey is a guitarist but learned the drums in record time and that's why you see them change places in some videos.
the shots of the audience....obviously confused by a monkees tune that was not hit is priceless....and they totally pull it off flawlessly .....brilliant!
Holy pickin' Batman! I can't really remember Peter's voice being showcased on other than that Auntie Grizelda song, which was kind of cute flat and ugly. He does an incredible job here on a song made iconic by Mike's voice, not to mention Mickey and Davy's flavorful harmonies. Really impressive.
Have you heard him singing lead on 'I Don't Think You Know Me at All'? That's a beautiful song and his version is better than Micky's. You can also hear him echo Micky in 'Words'.
kpax45 Mike was frustrated and told a reporter that they didn’t play on their album and the news had a field day. The point Mike was trying to make was that they could play but weren’t allowed to play. They did concerts just fine. The third album, Headquarters, they were allowed to play and play they did.
But Peter was presented as the bass play. Peter has later said, that he should have been on lead, Mike should have been on bass , Davey should have been th drummer and Mickey should have been the front man.
@@TiaMargarita the truth of the matter is, in all great bands, the most accomplished, versatile, and best trained musician usually plays bass. you need an understanding of music theory to play bass. think about it. it's true in the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Beach Boys, the Police, and many other examples. and therefore, the bassist is often the main songwriter [true in 3 of the 4 above examples] Peter Tork was the most versatile musician of the Monkees. but not a songwriter like Nez.
@@pkoven I agree that he was not known for his songwriting as Michael Nesmith’s songs were much more commercial though he did write the closing song for the tv show. He composed classical music performed by symphony and was rewarded the Classical music Lifetime Achievement award by Orchestra Kentucky. Also, keep in mind that The Monkees were never a band. Peter snd Micky exhausted themselves for decades explaining that they were actors cast in a TV show who were members of a band that never made it. The tours done sporadically through the years were when they were hired to recreate those characters which they absolutely enjoyed doing though they wished that their characters had names different from them as folks could not separate their actual natures from the character traits.
Peter did a great job. Thank you to all the monkees for all of the great songs over the years. Now let’s get these guys into the Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame while Mike and Mickey are still alive.
Oh, so happy Peter got to sing lead (on a non-novelty song)! Peter sounds great singing this...and of course, Mike sounds wonderful on the original! Peter and Mike...my favorite Monkees! Love all the guys!
Great performance. Mike was best on this one but Peter was awesome on this. All 4 Monkees under appreciated as the talented guys they are, n were. Deserve more respect than they got. But usually the best are that way. Never appreciated as they should be but I love the Monkees!
The monkees were a time in music when things got crazy but not nearly as bad as what we face today in this so called society I grew up with my sister listening to them and pictures of them decorated the wz All of her bedroom thank you guys for the music and helping us share a piece of music history you guys left behind for us to enjoy today rest in l Peace davy Jones and Peter tork you guys made it what it was great chemistry again thankyou
I love this song but by the time the 80s rolled along, this song never played on the radio so they probably didn't know the lyrics like they did for Daydream Believer, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, or I'm a Believer. That was too bad. This was a great performance and classic song
Like that they paid homage to Mike. Just an amazing chemistry among those guys. It would take anyone out there years to be able to play like Peter did right there. RnR HOF really pulled a foul deed not recognizing the Monkees while all 4 were here.
Its a pity they were around the time they were to many great groups and solo singers, they were excellent, if they were around today young, they would top the charts easy with the rubbish now, they would have no contest, most people who like good music, have to revert to the 50s,60s and 70s,plus 80s were good
Peter could’ve easily made the song a hit with him as lead vocalist! Thank you for giving us this amazing performance to enjoy! Miss you so Peter. Saw the Monkees in 86 when I was 19. Loved the music as a little girl thinking it was new. I’d do you proud today as I went out in my 1960’s retro style clothes! I enjoy fashion and looking different from everyone else and loved Peter’s clothing in particular!
Peter should have played the banjo for this one, I think. Not many bands were doing unplugged at this time, but the Monkees have always been cutting edge. I don't think this is a good singalong song because it's not as familiar to everyone. I love the long, luscious brown hair he had back then, just begging to be run through by my fingers.
It's only years later you realize what a game-changer they were... a fake band that became a real band, that brought session musicians into the open. And it's truly bizarre to think they have been written off by some as musically lame.
They suffered from that "fake Beatles" criticism, but I like a lot of their recordings as much or more than a lot of Beatles songs, not to mention that in many ways "Head" is a more creative, wilder, more meaningful movie than any of the films the Beatles did!
Amazing guitar first off. Just the guys at their best. I believe Mike despised the song anyway so it not sacrilege to say this version is superior. Mick's backup just truly inspired as well. Thank you for posting this.
Nope, Mike liked this one. They were at that point commissioning outside songs from writers they respected and this was one of those cases. Peter does a nice job with it but it really belonged to Mike. Mike had the plaintive quality in his voice that makes the song shine. I've heard other people sing it but Mike's is the definitive vocal.
It is irony that Peter was the most musically inclined of the group, given how they were depicted onscreen. It was said that in hindsight the lineup should have been Peter on guitar, Mike on Bass, Davy on drums, and Micky as the frontman,
Actually, Peter moved around from base to piano to organ to banjo to guitar. Mike just stayed on guitar. Davy occasionally played bass and drums, but mostly tambourine and marachos. I don't recall Mickey ever playing guitar during the filming of the TV show, only drums. He played guitar in on the road performances. I've seen Davy playing guitar in later performances, too.
Peter started to mess up the second verse of the song and caught himself. And he looked at Davy who probably smiled too. I love Peter singing this and what a talented guitar player!
I think Peter is adorable in this, and his singing & guitar picking are great, but my ridiculous husband says he looks like a cult leader, & I can’t unsee it.
I would have liked to see (and hear) Peter Tork and Stephen Stills performing together. Their voices were similar enough that their harmonies might have been pretty great.
The Monkees only did what a lot of bands did back then in using studio musicians on their records. They're the only ones to catch shit for it and it was hypocritical that nobody came to their defense. The Byrds (whom I love and was one of those bands that had used studio musicians before) even wrote So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star as a dig at the Monkees. I love that song but its quite hypocritical.
Only the Byrds first single had session players backing McGuinn. The reason was to save money for the label. Session players could play the parts immediately and so less studio time was used. Once the band had a hit, they let the full band record. The Byrds were a legitimate performing band before being signed. The Monkees were created for a TV show and were not a real band. They would eventually become one, but they couldn't have recorded their first couple of albums, even if the label had let them. The Monkees are what they are. It's not an insult or a slight, but comparing them to bands like the Byrds the way you just did is asinine.
BadfingerBoogieBarb I would argue that the Monkees have more staying power as they continue to perform (2017). And the Byrds were tied to a period of time and expired.
You know, I always thought Mike wrote that one, but about a year ago I looked it up and was surprised to learn Michael Martin Murphy and Owen "Boomer" Castleman wrote it.
Wayne Mathews Mike was a successful busy businessman and was not able to go on tours. There are some concert videos on RU-vid starting in 2012 where Mike rejoined the band after Davy’s death. RIP Davy.
Peter is A good guitar player and an OK singer. My feeling about it after all these years is that he underdeveloped his talents. It seems he would've been a great fit for a lot of the 70s singer songwriter movement, but for whatever reason we hear very little musically from him during this time.
After The Monkees broke up Peter spent or gave away his money and was partying hard for a few years...ended up doing a prison stint in 1972...then a bunch of odd jobs (teacher, coach)...got married a few more times (when he died he was married to his 4th wife). Formed various music groups along the way.
I always felt he had a lot more songs in him (as a writer) than he ever produced, which is a shame in my opinion. Also, he really should've been the lead guitar player. Their line-up was really screwed up in every way imaginable....and some of them knew it. I always wondered why they didn't vary their original line-up in later years, and put Mike on bass, Micky on rhythm guitar, Davy on drums and Peter on lead. Their sound would've been much more filled in and enhanced, since Peter could've done strong solos. Also, this arrangement would've allowed one additional instrument to be played on all, or most of, their songs by Davy on drums instead of only "percussion", freeing Micky to fill in rhythm guitar...and maybe Mike and Peter could still have switched their roles on stage from time to time. (At least Davy started taking more active part by playing rhythm guitar instead of only percussion. Their stage sound definitely was stronger into the 1990's than it had initially been...plus Mike started playing short solo bursts, doing more of a lead than he had been doing in past decades. He certainly seemed capable of doing more when he put his mind to it.)
Peter had some serious problems, the major one being alcoholism (and the lesser one drugs). He also had Asperger's but wasn't diagnosed until 2009. I think he gave away his money because he didn't feel worthy of it. Then, when he was down and out, no one jumped in to help him. Such a shame.
@@lindas.5191 Peter gave his money away because he didn't' believe in having excess $$ and not sharing with everyone. Generous and wanting not to care about "things" and wealth.
Just seems wrong for them to be doing one of Mike's songs without him. There were plenty of Monkees hits written by other songwriters they could have chosen. Not sure why they chose this one since it is not well suited for either Tork's or Dolenz's voices.
chuckschilling Mike didn't write this. I know he traditionally sung it, but Peter did a nice job, and it was good to hear a new take. I personally love Peter's soft spoken folky sound, as much as I like Mike's Houston tenor and rockabilly sound. I agree Mike's vocals are better suited to this one, but it's as much their song as his.
@@budgles Houston tenor. Thanks for putting it into words for me. The man has chops. Davy is my fave IF I had to pick one. I think is dancing is off as is his singing a lot. Perhaps in relation to the type of music they perform (he's great for variety and musical theatre). But - he's awesome nonetheless. Wouldn't change a single maraca about him ❣️ x
