This video introduces and explains the monkey and hunter example of projectile motion for A Level Physics.
This is a classic experiment, and you can often see a demo of it in the lab. A hunter fires a projectile at a monkey that drops from the branch as soon as it hears the sounds. Where should the hunter aim? Up, level or down?
Thanks for watching,
Lewis

You are truly changing learning physics to something fun that brings us back to our childhoods! This is what we need, to still be kids and enjoy what is left of our childhood. Not trying to grow up faster with by watching boring lectures that are very formal! You are amazing!

Won't there be a period between the firing of the arrow and the dropping of the monkey where the monkey has not yet noticed & reacted to the arrow, and so gravity is not applied to the monkey but it is applied to the arrow? So won't the arrow be slightly lower than the monkey if it is fired directly horizontally, potentially letting the monkey live?

is air resistance ignored in this experiment

Yes it is.

Since the monkey is heavier than the arrow, wouldn't the monkey have more GPE and reach the ground first? Or are components independent of mass?
@RagingLoner13
@RagingLoner13 2 года назад
in a world where air resistance does not exist, a feather and a steel ball would reach the ground at the same time

there are a lot of flaws in this example, not gonna lie. - first is the reaction time of the monkey. - second, even tho the vertical velocity is supposedly the same for both the arrow and the monkey. It is quite not true that the horizontal velocity doesnt matter for the arrow. if the arrow is too fast, it might travel past the monkey/tree even though the vertical height of the arrow and the monkey is same. IDK correct me if I got this wrong.

There's also no air resistance but of course you need to remember this is just an analogy to help us understand why the vertical and horizontal components of projectile motion can be treated independent of each other. Long story short, this is a simple, ideal physics world! Let's enjoy that eh? 😊 p.s. Thanks for the great content as usual sir!
