Disclaimer. This is not a paid review nor do I keep the keyboard after wards.
MY THOUGHTS:
The MONOKEI Kei V2. I finally got to look at it a few days before the GB ended, which I think is a little on the shorter notice side or things. The board came and the parts for it came later than expected and I wasn't expected to do this stream so I apologize if i seem unprepared for this.
Overall though I was skeptical about the board. They sent me one of the most expensive configs out there and honestly one that I was not expecting much out of because the plate being copper. The first try with inks they supplied was not looking good, but we quickly swapped to Nixies and OH BOY did it make me re think the board. I really like it. So much so that I want to grab one for myself.
I didnt care for the JST connector at all, I really think it needs to be redone. The board assembles really easily and everything feels very premium. I will say this though as a cautionary statement, this uses a custom daughter board and thats just one more piece you may have to shell out for in the scenario it breaks. Which I appreciate them developing something new, I just want people to be aware of that.

Thank you so much for testing this! I'm not buying anything these days without checking out what especially you and some other creators have to say about it. Getting definitely suspicious when a company won't (or really late) send out review units. The sound tests they did all sounded mediocre at best. I would have loved to see, how this sounds with Alu bottom and plate. Thank you so much again for you work!

Beautiful with this copper top case cover and the screwless magnetic design looks amazing, so easy and safe to swap anything. I think it's the first one which actually surprises me.

It sounds great, the spacebar is very sharp and clean and the alphas have enough punch to fit in with the spacebar and sound relatively balanced across the board. HG sides look classy, nice design overall, but I gotta say, Monokei must be smoking some serious product if they have the gall to offer a $300AUD copper top addon, which really has no positive impact on acoustics to speak of, but no copper bottom, which IS proven to have a positive impact on acoustics. If they just wanted a copper colour, they could've just done a faux copper ano and it would've been much more sensible

Copper top is steep, but the Mode Sonnit with copper bottom also gets into a similar price range.

Please let me know what those coffee themed keycaps in the first build were called. Didn't here the name of them anywhere in the video and those looked amazing. Kind of looked like GMK Tiramisu and kind of didn't. Great video as always Alex!

It feels wierd that they wont reply to customer concerns and wont send out more reviews until its too late, this feel like a money grab by using the kohaku backplate to entice people who did not win the raffle.

VERY SUS of monokei sending same exact config they already shown. They deliberately scheduled the gb where reviewers only get to build and only use it for 1-2days before gb closes. They also chose to only send very specific materials and plates which left alex no choice but to build it with same exact config they already shown, sus again. They chose to ignore buyers request of a full alu build/sound test throughout the gb period with little to non indepth reviews from ytbers. Very sus. For this price, buyers need to fully see the sound capability of the kei with every available configuration. As much as I want to cop one. These consecutive poor choices of monokei deliberately avoiding to give consumers proper review/ requested soundtest config of kei from respected streamers, is very frustrating and begs to question their integrity. This is just very SUS and a hard pass for this manufacturer.

Ive actually already voiced this to them as well, Im glad I got to look at it at ALL and see what it sounded like without the silicone insert. I dont think it's SUS personally, I think it was just pretty bad planning from their marketing department and clearly it's a fumble to anyone who wanted to see different configs. It most likely costed them some sales.

@@alexotos hey alex we appreciate you featuring it, given you got it so late, you still squeezed it in your stream sched to show berore gb closes. I’m just so frustrated as I’m so hyped with this board and waited so long for a simple sound test and it’s not just me or few people.. there’s actually a lot of us who waited and just wanted a simple classic build for a soundtest. It’s not a cheap board for someone like me so I want to know what I’m actually getting if that makes sense. I’m just really frustrated they cant provide even just a simple “yt shorts” sound test given how many people asking for it in comment sections of previous kei v2 vids they posted.

Kei v2 makes note of how they are partially building this in honor of the Kohaku. You can buy the Kohaku backplate for the Kei. So I think will all of that said, Id really~ be interested in hearing what you think about this board compared to the PC Kohaku.

I dont like copper plays well with a lot of switches and it's super pricey. ALU, FR4 and PC are the safest choices for a wider variety of switches in most cases.

@@alexotos I like copper because its heavier and beautiful. You can even see the orange between the keys when its on a plate. I haven't noticed (in my limited experience) much difference in terms of sounds between alu and copper, my understanding is that they are very similar material wise. I also find that not many designers offer copper plates so despite the cost I think twice given how rare it is. It's cool they sent the copper for a change, alu is too generic.

No WKL option, no polished SS bottom option because "probably won't hit MOQ" but they're fine with running a solid copper top piece as an option? Is that really more likely to hit MOQ than WKL? Why are they so stubborn??? It's not like it's an in stock sale, they don't start production until they've taken our money anyway so why wouldn't they just have those options available to actually gauge demand? How would a solid copper top sell more than WKL tops? Makes no sense to me

U can check out the MK72 from MIKIT. It's a Gameboy inspired prebult HHKB with the F row.

i’m not sure any hhkb versions of these keebs exist. But your best best is a 60XT with the f row on the left side of keeb. Keep in mind 60XT keyboards are usually smaller run group buys and will be pretty pricey

I didnt receieve any other plate other than the copper. And i thought with the right switches it sounded good! The inks were an awful combo imo

I know Alexotos is running a relaxed and chill stream and mentality and overall it is very enjoyable but his unpreparedness keeps coming up. He tends to not know about (important) features or material choices of the board he reviews, keeps stating wrong prices etc*. I am not sure if this is partially the manufacturers fault for not providing these information to Alexotos but I feel the production quality would feel noticably higher if those things were adressed correctly. Please find a way to be given proper instructions about a board and prepare better for the live sessions. *These errors usually are adressed in post production via text on screen or later because chat corrects Alexotos but it's still lowering the perceived performance and quality of the video.
