As always - great video! Just wonderful. Have been using a Manfrotto mono pod exclusively for the last year. What was a game changer was adding the Wimberley MonoGimbal Head. That did away with using the tripod foot which was somewhat cumbersome. The single leg-point to ground creates a perfect pivot - but you could definitely run the Head and foot in combo.. The MonoGimbal Head also overcomes the angle problem you mentioned when shooting up (or down). A major advantage of using a monopod is ease of carry. With an R5 and RF600 f/4 attached can walk forever... or at least far greater distances than with a full tripod rig. One word of caution. Slinging the tripod over shoulder does create vulnerability and a single point of failure if the foot clamp loosens. I run two Peak Design Cuff straps. One from the Wimberley to the Lens and the second from the Lens to the body. Has saved me once when the clamp was offset and worked loose. Hard to describe the feeling of a really expensive camera and lense falling off of your back and the elation, a microsecond later, as the Peak Straps kicked in like a bungee cord. Back to the premise - great video Duade. Super inspirational. Thanks!

You definitely deserve more subscribers. Your videos are mede so everybody can learn how to be better photographers in the nature. Especially, the way you present the cropping from RAW with all details and telling, it is okay to crop. Nobody else is doing that! Excellent work!!!

As a sports shooter I use a monopod all the time. Any monopod or tripod I own has an Arca swiss quick release plate on the top, even if i have to add that to the proprietary quick release of the maker. Being able to go 50cm or so higher than your eye is important for situations like shooting from bleachers or a hill where you need to put the monopod foot significantly lower than your feet. It's not something you'll do with a 500mm lens, but a great creative use of a monopod is get the camera up high 1-2m over your head or even in front of you. trigger with a remote or self timer. Use that to photograph your camp site, or looking down a waterfall etc. Maybe into a bird's nest. Works great with normal to wide lenses or even fisheye.

I've used a monopod for almost twenty years. It extends to 68", and has three 9.5" feet that are on one screw-on assembly that stores completely enclosed inside the tube when not being used. I use a pistol grip ball head, which adds 8" to the length. In your video it appears you are bending over a bit, and having to tilt the monopod to frame the shots. You'll be convinced about using a pistol grip head the first time you use one! Monopods have some tradeoffs, but are very much worth using when you can get the shots you want. The Cobra has some nice features, and I'd surely be looking at one today if I needed a new monopod. Love your channel - absolute pleasure to watch and listen to - so peaceful. Beautiful work! :)

Hi Duade, great review as always! I got this unit after seeing an article on DPREVIEW, where it was pitched as a videographers' unit. However, the obvious advantages of having a very light, compact and versatile unit were clear for my stills shooting. I love the mini tripod with ball head on the base, but I did add a SmallRig ball head as well, also getting a spare quick release plate so that I could use it with a second camera. One thing is also good to note is that there is a rubber foot that comes attached to the tripod base that can be removed and placed on the main shaft, so that it creates both mini tripod and a monopod configurations that can be used separately. A couple of places I found it useful was outside the realm of bird wildlife photography. I was able to take it to a museum or art gallery and use it there, because the lighting is often extremely dim for hand-held shooting, but they don't allow a full tripod in there. I also tried it sitting in the stands of a rugby game, where there certainly isn't the room to spread a tripod legs without incurring the wrath of other spectators. Similarly, I have taken it to the zoo during lockdowns to keep my eye in and that is helpful, especially when there are lots of other people in the same enclosure. So, it's extremely flexible and convenient. I have quite a few tripods, and honestly I rarely use them. I have a steady hand, so I shoot predominantly hand-held and, as you say, modern IS really makes that a lot easier. This monopod unit lives in the car, so it's handy when I need it.

One thing that make mono's soooo much more functional (for me!) is a good head. Have a look at the Wimberley MH-100, Gimbal style balance to allow you to move up and down and it's a side mount so no extra height, quite compact and makes carrying the big lens on your shoulder much more comfy due to the offset

I just finished the video where you say to break the rules and include some habitat in your frames like Matt did. Funny how our style and preferences change over time with experiences. Excellent review and summary of the pros and cons to this monopod vs tripod differences. Beautiful photos as well, I love seeing the raw vs final versions also.

I started my wildlife and bird photography near 40 years ago. The monopod was and is the ideal support for walk&shoot with medium to heavy equipment. You are ready to shoot within fractions of a second. I still use a three segment and a 4 segment version of Monostat, discontinued since decades now but available on eBay. There was never a better monopod, sturdy with a very intelligent foot with an integrated ball segment. Those Monostats are practically new despite them travelled several times around the world holding shape as Gitzo or Sachtler tripods are famous for. My experience: Use a fairly light one way head on top of the monopod, no ballhead to increase the versatility. Today there are sorts of sidekick or similar available. The presented monopod looks decent - and Duade your shots of great Australian wildlife are excellent as always.

Great pictures! This is a really good monopod. I use the shorter C-120, often with a not too expensive carbon fiber gimbal head from Movo. The other thing that's handy is a carbon fiber tripod extension (about $30) that you can attach to the tripod foot of the monopod for a little more height if you are sitting on the ground instead of being prone. Ifootage also sells extra quick release plates for about $25 so you don't have to keep attaching and detaching things from the plate

Just to add to the other posters - you are such a great story teller as fellas excellent photographer. We know we are going to hear a monopod review but your approach of actually using it in the bush and showing the raw images and how they are cropped at the same times so satisfying! An although the monopod clearly worked well for you through the process I loved how you zoomed out to reflect on the user poll. Just love your stuff! Informative but always relaxing!

Great Video mate. The most difficult thing about monopods is that if you need to point up quickly, I see most people lifting there camera plus the Monopod. So it makes it even harder sometimes. It is nice to give your arms a test from time to time tho

You got some cool shots with the monopod and I'm going to order one tomorrow . I aleady have a basic one but when I saw the ability to use it as a ground level tripod which is something I've been considering for a while now then it was a done deal. 👍

If you like the monopod, and like the tripod and gimbal, try the wimberly mono pod gimbal head... Absolutely changes everything

Thanks for the video Duade. Inspirational as usual. I Started using a gimbal head on my monopod. I’m just getting into bird photography & do a fair bit of footy. I found a tripod was too bulky for getting around the footy oval & standard ballhead on a monopod wasn’t really fit for purpose. The gimbal on the monopod is ideal…all the pluses & minuses you mentioned. Very versatile. To overcome the the hassle of having to hold the monopod constantly I take a a waterproof plastic bag so I can rest it on wet ground & a small 3 legged folding chair when I want to be alert but not foot sore. Works for me

Hi Duade, I agree with you about the downtime, nice just watching the world go by. Just now I got back from Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens shooting the Australasian Grebe myself. I missed the egg stage, their tiny chicks are cruising on the lake and they are so very cute. I was laying on a rough pebblecrete path there, but took a yoga mat which makes lying on rough ground very comfortable. I've been using a monopod for many years now, if you use one a gimbal head is definitely the way to go. One bonus when walking around with a monopod is when you stop and put it on the ground, it weighs nothing! Also, if you're waiting ages for a bird to take off or do something interesting, it sure beats handholding a long lens. It's much faster to set up than a tripod each time you stop if you're walking around and not staying in one place.

Some really nice images! I especially appreciate seeing your RAW files, and the subsequent crop with post processing. I am also a fan of iFootage products as I have one of their excellent carbon fibre tripods.

Yes, I use a pro-master monopod, however I shoot from a 4X4 wheelchair. Totally different setup. That said I have tried tripods, but the monopod is so much better. Thanks for the video.

I often like to try to take a shot of the subject taking off when on walkabout. The wait (weight) can be tiring and often becomes shaky, so with the support of the mono pod it makes it much easier. Lovely video.

I know that feeling when your waiting for a bird, you catch a glimpse of movement and up pops a Yellow-footed Antichinus in a perfect position in perfect light, what a buzz. Always wondered about a monopod (also use a 500mm + 1.4) may have to start saving. I use a tripod with Gimball or more often than not handhold. Great video Duade.

I really liked this video, Duade in the bush, nothing better! Back in the day I used a monopod, but stopped and just handheld. Bcs I'm lazy, and the little place it took (compared to a tripod), when packing for the abroad trips, was still more place/weight than *not* packing it. But, since I'm weaker than you (and passing the age of 65 certainly hasn't changed my unsteady hand to the better) I would really need at least a monopod. Preferably a tripod, ofc, but if I can't be bothered to use a monopod then a tripod doubly/triply wouldn't be bothered with... I certainly liked this one, many finesse details. But, most of all I loved your giddy happy reaction over that Aussie version of "tree-shrew". If that would've been me, I would've been exactly the same :-) That park (Warby-Ovens), is that a place you would recommend visiting? I have started to plan for my future (2023 at the earliest) Australia-New Zealand visit, and need a good number of birding spots to choose from.

What a great day in the Victorian bush! A very enjoyable review with a constructive and fair assessment at the conclusion. This monopod has some nice features. I have recently purchased a Manfrotto on which I have mounted a Sirui monopod head which gives you up and down movement only, since you already have rotational movement. For anyone considering a monopod, don't make the mistake I did in originally buying a good brand, but light compact unit which was really pretty useless when put to use. There are many things to consider like weight, usability, height and size, but don't overlook the most important feature, being stability.

I always hand hold but thinking about getting a monopod because I've recently starting shooting more video. There is still some shake even with stabilization when hand holding.

Just watched your video and once again thanks for the great shots. I haver the Ifootage Ali 180 and have paired it with a Wimberley Monopod Gimbal. This only has the vertical axis but the monopod allows horizontal rotation. Really like this piece of gear.

Hi Duade Great video with ideal timing for me. Recently bought a monopod with a similar design- 3 legged thing. Main use envisaged is as you describe- tracking birds/deer and providing stability support when using 200-400 mm lens. Early days but so far impressed with stability (shot dipper at 1/10th second) and portability. Agree with all your pros/cons. At the end of the day believe it is horses for courses. Ideally hand held is best but we all need stability in certain situations. There will be times when you best use a skimmer plate, beanbag, tripod or monopod. Up to the individual to see what works best in different situations.

Hi Duade, Your question on what do you use most , tripod, monopod, handheld was slightly flawed. When I use my 500F4 Lens I always use a Monopod and have always done this for many years, when I use my 100-400mm with 1.4 extender I always use it handheld, so it depends which Lens you are using and I use the lighter kit more than the heavy kit because I like the freedom it gives you .I also own a Gitzo tripod but very rarely use it as I like walking. Another great video and it seemed a more relaxed style of you enjoying your passion for wildlife photography and we can all identify with that. 10/10

Try using Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head (or similar head for Arca-Swiss) - adds a lot to ease of use. When using tilt head grab the lens by a barrel with left hand. I'm using such setup for years, including manual focus telephoto lens.

Great video. I'm mostly handheld but I like the idea of the monopod for a bit extra stability. Loved all the photos but the wee Antechinus was a real treat!

Thumbs up on monopods! I have the alloy version of the one you reviewed; the only one I have ever used so can't offer any feedback on how it compares to other brands. I've added a Wimberly MonoGimbal...highly recommend! I have a very heavy setup - EOS 7D Mk II + Sigma 150-600 Sport. I added a foam pad (plumbing pipe insulation) around the upper grip and carry the entire setup on my shoulder as I hike through mountain trails. Balances perfectly on my shoulder so often I can hike hands free. Just enough added stability to get crisp wildlife and bird shots; not ideal for birds in flight. My 2 cents. :)

Thank you Duade. Beautiful photos in a lovely setting. I use all three - I use a Manfrotto Elements Monopod (screws for extending the monopod are very slick) with the Wimberley Monopod Gimbal. It works well. Whistling Wings Photography reviewed the gimbal with the monopod/flag harness combo. I ended up finding the harness kept slipping off my shoulders so now I use an old fanny pack and seat the foot of the monopod in the open pouch - so I can use the other pockets of the fanny pad for other stuff. However the iFootage Cobra 2 C180 II may be more steady as, if the operator is the tripod, there may be more motion blur depending on how strong you are. Weight lifting help a bit.

Hi Duade. Excellent images and review of this iFOOTAGE Cobra 2 C180 monopod! As a landscape and product photographer who occasionally shoots wildlife, I use a great Leofoto LN-254CT for product and landscape work, but also wanted to test this monopod for when hiking on mountain trails. I agree with your assessment of the superb build quality and engineering. As my longest lens is only a Nikkor 70-300, I find that a combination of Sirui L-10 head with a Promaster Pan head, makes for a very versatile kit, permitting locking of the foot ball, and just pan/tilting via the top ball/pan heads.I find that images taken with this monopod (and keeping shutter speeds above, say, 1/30 sec.) are just as sharp as if I used a tripod. For slower shutter speeds and/or time-lapse, obviously a tripod would be preferred (or, simply use the monopod foot as a tripod, and problem solved!) In summary, I think iFOOTAGE makes very high-quality and robust gear for photographers and videographers. Thanks again!

Using monopod with my 400mm f5.6 for 8 years. Can't imagine going out without it. A monopod is always handy even with a light gear setup. Plus when I have to hold camera for slight longer period of time to get the moment or bird out of the bush, the 2 kg setup feel like 20kg soon.

Beautiful photos!! Those from day one are my favourites :) I notice that in the first "shooting" part of the video, it's different from your previous videos I think. It is less scripted than your "instructional" videos. Therefore showing more of your spontaneous reactions. Very engaging, because it is taking me along your enthusiasm/passion shooting (maybe emotional engaged?). Not that I'm not engaged in your more instructional videos, but that's more engaging because it makes me think and have insights (mentally engaged?). I don't think I have a preference, it just occurred to me.

Been using a mono pod for a number of years now for both macro and general wildlife photography have found it a great deal more portable than a tripod in many situations - looks like it was working for you too in the video giving you some nice images Duade. 👍

I use the shorter, aluminium version of this and got it to replace my traditional monopod. A lot of my photography involves sitting and waiting for wildlife and yes, I do leave it standing without having to hold it, but then it’s only slightly extended. So far in over two years my camera and 500mm prime hasn’t fallen over though I wouldn’t try that fully extended. It really is a great monopod and given me a lot more options.

I have 2 monopods but neither have the bottom feet. If I can find a set of feet to attach to my existing sticks you may have just converted me when I'm out woods walking. Great video. My one drawback I see with one is strictly a personal preference and that's the locks. I perferr twist locks over the clamps.

Thanks for this excellent review of the iFootage Cobra 2 C180 II! I decided against it mostly because I already own a mini tripod (Rollei traveler mini M-1). Therefore I went for the Gitzo GM2542. With its 164 cm it seems to be a little short. However it seems like Gitzo was only measuring its 4 segments. The foot it comes with add another 10 cm to the monopod and its mechanism makes this Gitzo GM2542 a genius as this Cobra 2 (with the exception of the included mini tripod of the Cobra 2). Combined with a Novoflex Q-Mount or Q-Mount II this is a very light weight combination (the Monopod comes in at 510 g)! Sure you could go cheaper with a Sirui P-326. However with a payload of 30 kg this Gitzo GM2542 is simply outstanding.

I've been handholding the Sigma 150-600 lens for a couple of years, but after having some problems with my left shoulder AND about to turn seventy in a couple months, I'm now using a monopod. The tripod is too clunky for my purpose, as I like to walk and move about. The monopod works pretty well unless I'm sitting and the bird is above me, but that's a small tradeoff to being able to get around easier with a heavy lens.

Bought a cheapo monopod years ago and whenever I took it out it was always a hassle unless the target was straight ahead, above or below always ended up a problem. Until I fitted it out with a 2 way Induro monopod head.

Ah the monopod the middle man between tripod and handheld, certainly looks a quality product and the ballhead at the foot has it's advantages and disadvantages for sure, nice review Duade.

Have a monopod but I will be getting this one with quick release and the foot tripod, too!! I use it for my Sigma 600mm contemporary lens. I can't hold for very long because how heavy the lense gets.

Very much like the walking around style videos, since I think if you did a poll, the overwhelming majority of shooters on your channel walk around and shoot handheld without a tripod (no setups). Great work!

I have used a different head to my monopod..I have found it helpful as it gives a trade off between stability and flexibility. It’s a Manfrotto 234RC and is with no ball, just movement on one axis, up and down. It is simply better as the monopod can be turned and the head makes it possible to follow up and down without the hassle with an unstable ball. Try it and you don’t want to without it.

I use a monopod regularly, but use it with my gimbal head as it makes the tilt motion much easier.

I own a K&F Concept TC2534 Carbon tripod where one leg can be detached and used as a monopod. Of course I tried it to see that it actually worked, but when I saw how long it took and how much work it was, I knew I was never going to use it as anything other than a tripod. I also own a very light Camlink monopod. I’ve used it for macro a little bit, but I couldn’t quite get used to it - I find handholding a lot easier. So it’s been years since I last used a monopod.

I have the ifootage monopod with the twist to adjust mechanism. I use a lightweight gimbals sirui pH 10 with it, but I think a monopod would work fine. The monopod can do all axis with a monopod head

Great review. I am getting into this game very late in life and the more I know, the more I realize that I DON'T know! I have a cheap monopod (no tri-base) and was considering adding one of these to my medium-sized rig (Nikon body, Sigma 150-600 TP, 5 to 6 pounds total) but when I saw how many people shoot handheld (which I do, most often), I'm wondering if I really need this. The other thing I appreciated was your showing of both the RAW file and the post-production piece. It made me realize that I'm taking some decent shots after all, I just don't have the skills at LR or whatever that I probably should acquire to make the decent shots into special ones like yours! I use a quick-release plate, and use the monopod as a walking staff, on uneven terrain.

Hi Duade, a Monopod with three feet is certainly useful for wildlife photography ! I use the Sirui 204-S another option, anything which increases stabilisation as you know is key ! Only draw back with the three feet is it sometimes is difficult to plant flat on the ground, sometimes and it can get stuck in the bush or brush as I think you refer to it down under ! I usually opt for the straight Monopod ! Love the Rat on a trunk, awesome don't get them here just the ugly plague carriers ! Cheers great product 👍😍

I hand hold when I am walking around. There are times where I come upon a place where hand holding for a long period is onerous. my arms is get tired while waiting for the bird to get into a good vantage point. This is where the mono pod would be awesome. SOLD

Pretty timely Duade, it’s bear season here and I’ve been following the movement of bears as they move fairly quickly from one location on the river to the next to fish,.This is just after sunrise so light is not good, so a tripod would be good for my big lens, but I find it cumbersome and a bit slow to use in quick moves and set ups, so I use my old Manfrotto monopod that works a treat, it is however showing it’s ago (30 plus) so this might be perfect,especially with that low ground tripod. I actually use monopods more because since i am not a pro and like just walking around the wild, i use it as a walking stick with QR plate, or just to rest the camera on it instead of handheld. Saying this, i use fairly light 1lb manfrotto monopod so its rather a pleasure to carry around and even lift up with the camera on.

Pretty interesting mono pod. I think I use a mono pod for about 85% of my shooting with my 600/4 it’s just so convenient compared to a tripod.

The vanguard veo 3+ 236ab is both a monopod and tripod so it's a good option for both if can't decide

Great video @Duade, thanks. What is the arca plate that you use? The long one with six holes that slots into the gimbal and the monopod top. I've not seen one that has a spacer between the camera and the plate, it looks good. I particularly liked how you used it to balance the camera when lying down and using the base alone.

I am happy with my LL Bean hiking stick/monopod coupled with a Manfroto tilt head and quick release plate. I used monopod without a tilt head for quite a while, but the tilt head makes all the difference in ease of lining up a shot. Much better than a ball head for this use as the camera can not flop over and as long as you have a collar on your lens you end up with three full degrees of rotation without awkwardly tilting the monopod. Because a find a hiking stick useful when exploring with a full pack, this adds no meaningful weight to my kit.

Great video, I like the product especially the foot BUT... I think the Wimberley MH-100 MonoGimbal Head for Monopods is the way to go though for using a monopod. It takes a little getting use to but after that it is great.. I was shooting with a wimberly Sidekick SK-100 for a long time and I liked the way it worked and also it was comparatively inexpensive to a full gimbal all those years ago but sold it with my old lens. Now I use the $69 Movo GH-100 from Adorama and it has held up well so far. But now I am trying to migrate to the MH-100 with monopod as it is a much lighter combination. But I agree, there is no substitute for a tripod in the situations you mentioned.

I have the exact same monopod and been using that more often than my tripod. The mini tripod leg itself serves as phone holder lol.

Was just about to comment on how I use mine as a ground pod and well, you already bet me to it! I will actually use my gimble head on it, but its a tad high, maybe I'll try how you set it up direct mount.

Very informative video, as always. I've used the past two years a K&F tripod that converts into a monopod (one of its legs can be detached). I need the monopod because I have a Canon 80D (ISO doesn't perform very good at low light situations) and a classic 400mm. F5.6 (no IS), and it has worked quite good for walk-around photography of birds, deer, foxes... but the weight of the camera and lens is too much for the monopod and it has ended up loosening, which is understandable because its not made for that purpose. Also the monopod is not tall enough for me and I have to bend down a bit. Since I'm not planning to upgrade my camera/lens soon I think I might buy the one you show in the video, it seems solid enough to hold the weight and it's quite long. Also the tiny tripod seems very handy for ground (or water) level images.

Have you ever uses a gimbal he'd on a monopod? That really helps with having to tilt the monopod to capture scenes that are elevated or low to the ground.

I have this same model. But I had to add a ball head attachment. I can't stand the standard rigid mount. What I like most about it is the mini tripod. It removes the anoying yawing of monopods. Just adjust the drag on the bottom ball to my liking and it's great.
