Monopoly (PC, 1995) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Hasbro's 1995 board game adaptation for PCs running Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, Monopoly.
Played a game against two computer opponents.
Monopoly adaptations into video games usually tend to be pretty good (or it not, at least servicable), but this one goes far, far above that. As the first Monopoly game to be released exclusively on the CD-ROM format, Westwood Studios (behind some truly excellent games, like the Kyrandia series, Dune, Eye of the Beholder, Command & Conquer... the list goes on) absolutely nailed this title on their first shot.
For how modest its requirements are and were (in 1995, the minimum 486/33 wasn't by any means cutting edge), it bleeds class and atmosphere. They seriously went all out on the presentation, and its this aspect that many of its fans remember most fondly. Nearly everything in game is accompanied with some really cool CG work of the pieces doing their thing across the board, and each property would give a visual representation of its condition (whether it be a slummy purple with 1 house on it, or the gated grounds of the hotel sitting on Boardwalk), which was incredibly cool and novel. All of the rules are present from the board game, and it's pretty customizable, so any of the rules that you always played under with the family can be done here too (thank you, Free Parking bonus!). And most impressive of all, if you didn't have anyone sitting at the keyboard to play with you, you could play against a buddy on the internet. Pretty groundbreaking stuff, overall.
I also really got a kick out of the AI players being named after other popular computer game characters of the era. The simpleton that I have in there was meant to be He-Man, but then I realized that Adam of Eternia would not fit in the blank. Oops. Anyways, maybe now why he's using the iron makes more sense.
For me, this version of Monopoly is to the PC as the NES version is to the consoles. They might look and sound outdated as tech continues to march along, but neither of them have yet been outdone for sheer playability and fun on their respective platforms.

The Westwood-developed Monopoly is, in my opinion, the best PC rendition of the board game classic ever made. So what if it's 22 years old? It does everything right, and still to this day hasn't been one-upped in terms of playability!

Everyone was taken aback when they first saw Monopoly back in 1995. It looked so cool. Nice animation didn’t hurt, but it was the scenes of the various spots on the board that was really impressive.

Probably the best version of Monopoly you can find. Easy to pick up and play, the music is enjoyable and the sound chip on the older computers definitely adds to the nostalgia factor. To this day there have been many modern versions come out, but I've always came back to this particular version. it has a simple design that isn't in your face. It's all you need and nothing you don't. This is the first computer game version of monopoly I've ever played as a kid, but I'm not just being nostalgically biased here. If you are looking for a straight up game of monopoly this is the game for you. There is a version out there that is compatible with modern computers, you're just going to have to find it.

I remember getting this game back then in 2000 from the inside of a cereal box and playing it religiously because computer was a potato. Just recently found out it was made by Westwood which speaks of why it was so high quality. Awesome stuff. Ty for uploading. Nothing I loved more than landing on Baltic Ave and seeing the ghetto ass place I was about to purchase with no mercy. Side note: I like the option of how you're able to select "Cheating is Allowed" @1:20. Like wtf does that do haha. Imagine you're about to win and you see the AI just stealing money going hard during their turn.

The music is something else, man. I remember playing this game all the time in elementary school and enjoying - but not really thinking about - the music. Then I picked up jazz saxophone in middle school and fell in love with the jazz albums recommended by my music instructors. I think I finally realize why jazz was the first music genre I really grabbed on to. Great game, great music, great memories.

@Street_Hawk 4 года назад
@@NintendoComplete Thanks, before coming here again I was experimenting with stuff and figured I had to right click and set the 640x480 option in the compatibility setting. So that issue us already solved. But then there is another problem. How are the videos so crisp in your game? I'm playing this on Win 7 x64 but the videos are quite pixelated for me. Any ideas? I'm simply running it on Win7 x64 whereas you seem to be using some emulator? Is it because of that?
@NintendoComplete
@NintendoComplete 4 года назад
@@Street_Hawk Oh great. I'm glad you got it working! I used Dosbox running Windows 3.1 in order to play and record this. It worked pretty well. If it looks pixelated, it could be a couple of things. Are you running it at 4:3 like the game expects, or is it being stretched to fit a modern wide-screen monitor? That will distort the image quite a bit. The game is also meant to run at 256 colors. Running it at 16, 24, or 32-bit color depth can blow the color out and make things look super splotchy. I can't think of anything else that might cause it atm. Hope that helps!
@Street_Hawk
@Street_Hawk 4 года назад
@@NintendoComplete So where do I change the aspect ratio? There is no option for it when I right click the exe. Changing compatibility settings don't make any difference. I tried it at 256 colors and it looks much worse. I have an Nvidia card btw. I'm not a very technical person and Dosbox scares me so I stayed away from it. Installing Win3.1 and then the game on it is a bit too much work for me and I may screw up; also who knows if the game still didn't work as intended, lol. However, if you could make a tutorial or point me to one which explains in an easy manner as to how to install Win3.1 on Dosbox and then Monopoly 95 on it, then that would be nice. So again the issue here is that all the 3D videos in the game are just blocky and not very smooth looking. This also happens with me in Monopoly 3(2002). I played the AVI movies of Monopoly 3 in VLC player and they looked smooth. But in-game they look pixelated. It's weird.
@NintendoComplete
@NintendoComplete 4 года назад
@@Street_Hawk I'm not sure where aspect ratios would be. It depends on your PC. Probably either the in the Nvidia utility or an option in the bios if you're on a laptop. If it's just the FMV screwing up, then you probably need to install a codec that can decode it properly. I have no idea what it uses, though. I'd guess some form of QuickTime or indeo?
