Alberto Giacometti (1901 - 1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draftsman and printmaker, he lived and worked mainly in Paris and was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century.
This is the second in my series of non abstract work this month, I will try to continue to post 2 - 3 videos a week and as always I look forward to your comments and feedback. Method :
1. The acrylic wash
To begin this composition I first applied a wash of black acrylic paint to the paper, this helps to create a mid tone that will contrast the highlights of the black and white oil paint. Apply to cover the whole surface, darken the paint a little to position the placement of the portrait in the centre of the composition. Once this stage is finished allow to completely dry before beginning to apply the paint.
2. The drawing
The portrait needs some reference to work from and to use as a guide for applying the paint, I've kept this quite loose in style and deliberately want to eliminate all details, concentrating on the placement of the important features. Work from a simple sketch or photograph which is the same size as the artwork. Use only a thin grade of paper for this stage to make it easier to transfer the drawing.
3. Applying the oil paint
On the plastic transfer sheet spread a thin layer of the white oil paint and then carefully place this on top of the acrylic wash (now dry) I only use the drawing as a guide at this stage and will lay the drawing on top of the plastic transfer sheet, with light pressure from your finger begin to create the light areas of the work, this stage is almost like sculpture and you must keep lifting the transfer sheet to check the results. I remove the drawing and use it as a reference to continue the process. Once you are happy with the composition, move onto the black paint but this time use your finger or a blunt pencil to work on the dark tones.
This is a great technique to experiment with and it takes practice but the most important thing to remember is don't use too much paint.

Acrylic paint (black) This is for the base coat.
Oil paint (Winsor & Newton) Black and White
Recycled cardboard, plastic bag, parcel tape.
Pallet knife, blunt pencil, Q tips, rag or sponge for mark making.
Pallet knife (plastic) to transfer the oil paint onto the plastic sheet.
Paper (at least 200gsm)
masking tape, scrap card
gloves recommended and turpentine for cleaning.
