Good to see. I am also a competitor and looking forward to seeing you in Washington. Funny you actually got a picture of the mare I got in the group picture. She is the one with the snip and Star on far right. I named her Nala.

I got my QH colt for $3,000 and he was WAYY more wild than any of these mustangs i've seen. Goes to show ya that breeding and names mean nothing, and any mustang can be as good or better than a horse born in a barn.

I think the Mustang Make over is great, but it would nice if people would just adopt them, train them and sell them, without all the glamour. For sure MM has brought more light into the problem with all the Mustangs in holding pens.

Problem is most people don’t know how to train :(

There are folks who do just that, in order to help these horses make their way to good homes. Here is one I know of that's been around a while. I've been up there; it's a very caring and dedicated operation. I'm sure there are others as well. You can check out Mustang Camp in New Mexico at www.mustangcamp.org

I have seen thousands of these horses loaded ,, one yesterday ended up , UP SIDE DOWN in the loading shoot. give the horse the opportunity to come to you , not drag him. My horses trust me. EXAMPLE one of my horses poked its eye some how rolling around on a stick or something. The vet needed to put creams and drops in its eye 4 times a day to save the eye.( I had to) You couldn't even touch this horse past its neck, He understood that I was there for him and he never moved an inch. Vet would come out every other day and dyolate the eye , no problem this wasn't training it was trust.he never moved from the first time. He wasn't trained to have his eye messed with. he trusted me to do the right thing for him. When my horses see something that frightens them they run, TO ME.

Don Barr that’s the kind of trust you should have with your horses

I have heard this over and over, " it helps with the training to have a halter" "HOW exactly" I never halter my wild horses. why? because its causes trama , they scratch their face with hind leg and get it caught. they get the lead rope caught and break their neck fighting it. You cant do any real training with a wild horse until you can touch it. Then you halter and then take it off, and it does not look any thing like what you see here. You can train you horses to get over stuff or you can give them the opportunity to trust you.

@Playfulpanthress I dont know exactly what you are saying but if you have a halter on a sick horse that is wild, what are you going to do with it. You would need to talk to a vet. When my horses want to go , they go I cant stop them with a halter. when the black cat came out from under the shed, he stayed with me because of trust not because of the haulter.

Don Barr thanks for writing this. That haltering was really hard to watch, and sure seems like a horrible first halter experience to me. Those that find it makes life easier need to find another way. People do it successfully, so it is clearly possible.

What age or experience do you think someone should be to do this? I’ve been riding for about 10 years and I live on a farm and have all the necessities... I’m really interested in doing the extreme mustang makeover.... Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😊

Hey Madison!! I had no clue about what it would take to do this when I first started with mustangs in 2008, even though I'd been working with horses for years prior! However, best way to learn is by doing...you may surprise yourself! I say do it!

You can adopt from a BLM facility. Horse are sold for $125 and come with a one year contract to make sure the horses do not go to slaughter. It's best not to adopt a wild mustang until you have a lot of horse and training experience. Yes you can pick your own. The makeover horses are the only ones preselected. Please be sure to do research to insure you can give them the best life possible. You can also buy tamed ones if you don't have the time to train!

She looks like she has some Arab in her head and neck. She is probably both sensitive and intelligent.

Yes she is a very beautiful mirror but I do believe God put these horses on the earth for a reason and I do believe they should be left free not for slaughtered not for adoption Nothing free

there's issues with over population and over grazing. leave them and they starve to death.
@CathyGoes

Those horses are not naturally a part of the ecosystem here and left unchecked can cause a lot of damage. They are cool but just leaving them to breed is unrealistic.
