This one had me floating around on air for days. The G5 solar storm was the largest since 1989, the aurora it produced was most definitely the largest I have seen...It was a very emotional experience for me, I don't think I have ever been more in the present moment in my life. This experience is forever etched into my heart and soul.
It was made more special by the fact that I was joined by my big sister, my niece and my great niece (thanks for putting up with the aurora monster on the night you girls😘😘😘)
The first part is from the evening of the 11/5 at Lake Bolac...she was there in force as darkness fell, the most amazing experience, most of it visible to the naked eye. I was so engrossed in the show that I actually forgot to restart the intervalometer on my timelapse camera and missed getting the whole last chunk of the show....luckily I was doing panos etc with my other camera so I have those images to keep for prosperity.
The morning of the 11/5 was a crazy ride, I had travelled interstate to increase my chances of seeing it due to poor cloud forecasts where I live. The sky was perfectly clear around midnight but as the incoming CME was detected at the satellite it was full of cloud. I quickly drove inland searching for clear sky. I finally found a patch of sky by the side of the road in Western Victoria, with the display already well underway it was a little chaotic. The field in front of me had been recently burned and smoke was still thick in the air, there was fog starting to move in and a constant parade of semi-trailer trucks wizzing past...but not being familiar with the area I made do with the view I had. It's not the best footage but its there.
I'd like to say a special thank you to Dazza Fulton and Yu Ahu from 'Aurora Hunters United' who provided the most timely updates and forecasts leading up to and during the display. These guys are the best!!!
