I'd planned on making some sort of video type review of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom when it was first released at the end of 2018, but unfortunately real life got in the way and it just never happened. Since then, I've had the footage I'd originally intended to use getting slowly added to as I got further and further in the game, until I got to the point I'd actually completed it. With the PC now getting a port of the game 6 months after the console versions, it seemed like a good time to get my arse in gear and finally get on and make this video. I'd planned initially on just keeping it as a quick review with just a brief mention of the Wonderboy games, but it, of course, got bigger and bigger, until my 5 minute video ended up turning into a nearly 40 minute one. Suffice to say, the Wonder Boy games are one of my favourite gaming series of all time.
From the Wonder Boy Wikia:
'Wonder Boy (ワンダーボーイ Wandā Bōi) and the later Monster World (モンスターワール Monsutā Wārudo) sub-series is a series of video games published by Sega and developed by Westone Bit Entertainment (formerly Escape).
Westone had a unique licensing arrangement with Sega whereby Sega retained the rights to the names "Wonder Boy" and "Monster World", but Westone retained the rights to everything else.'
Games in the series:
Wonder Boy
Wonder Boy in Monster Land / Wonder Boy: Monster Land
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap / Monster World II: The Dragon's Trap
Wonder Boy in Monster World / Wonder Boy V: Monster World III
Monster World IV
Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom
99.9% of all the footage in this is stuff I've recorded myself of me playing (or of one of the games' attract modes). I used 2 very short excerpts from videos from RU-vid in 2 places: The first is of the King Mushroom boss in Monster Boy (I hadn't recorded my encounter with him when playing through the game originally) when comparing it to the similar boss in Wonder Boy in Monster World. The second is of 'The Tyrant Dragon' from Wonder Boy in Monster World, when comparing it to Voldrake in Monster Boy. I'd started playing through Wonder Boy in Monster World again, specifically to get footage for this video, but The Tyrant Dragon isn't encountered until much, much later in the game. Anyhoo, links to the full videos are below:

The Flying Hamster footage was lifted directly from the Game Atelier RU-vid channel. I changed the background music to the (awesome) Boss music from Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair, just in case the original background music was anything matched 3rd party content-able.

Having made a start on Wonder Boy in Monster world again (just to get footage for the video), I feel compelled to play it all the way through again now. I might have to have another crack at Monster World IV afterwards and see if perhaps I enjoy it a bit more second time around...
Oooooh, and I really ought to give Wonder Boy in Monster Land a proper playthrough too. And then play Monster Boy again!
