Everything's looking great! That was a good quick lesson in farm economics. I should say crop economics and sales! We enjoy sharing the harvested vegetables with everyone! Make a few dollars sometimes. But, we're not getting rich off small potatoes sales. "" All puns intended ""! But, you do have to be aware of your customers and instead of letting things go bad in the field? Sell it! That can be a hard battle against a few different things! God bless and safe travels!

Are there ever any requests for chilies like those grown in Hatch, NM? These are referred to as “long greens” or “big Jim’s”, kinds of chilies that are put in those big drum roasters and roasted over a propane burner. It’s a big business here in the southwest. A lot of grocery stores will get these Hatch chilies in by the cases or gunny sack fulls; usually labeled mild, medium or hot. They will have a chili roaster set up out front of the store where folks can get their chilies roasted. When people buy these huge amounts, they take the roasted chilies home, bag them up and freeze them for later use. Grocery stores will also have roasted chilies packaged up in pint and quart plastic containers for folks to buy that want a much smaller amount. I don’t know if it’s worth exploring for you all, but you might look into Hatch chilies and their popularity. Propagating some of those varieties for a small test field that you can grow, harvest and have available in you own farmers market store, might start a new taste craze. You could even look into how to roast a few to have for sale. The thing is, don’t knock it until you have tried it with a small test amount. What you might do is ask your big chili buying customers this season if they would be interested in Hatch chilies, and explain what they are. www.hatch-green-chile.com/pages/what-are-hatch-chiles

Your videos are fantastic. I only wish that we had the same kind of markets here in Denmark. We cannot of course grow all the vegetables you grow because of the climate but some of them at least is possible. All the best to you and your hard working family.

Getting itchy from rubbing up against corn leaves or other tall grasses and fuzzy leafed veggies like squashes and cucumbers is pretty common. As time went by my momma had to start wearing a long sleeved shirt over her cloths when she was in the corn patch. The corn leaves would eat her arms up. The last few years tending and harvesting squash, I had to start covering my arms. The leaves and vines would irritate my arms so bad that I would get little blisters or pustules, and the itch was very aggravating. I did get some of those pull on arm covering sleeves that helped. You might take note of all of your big corn buying customers, call them and take orders for corn, and any of your other produce, like cabbage, that you know you need to move a larger quantity of. My mom would always call her best customers and let them know in advance when corn would be coming on if they wanted a large quantity of corn for freezing or canning. Because corn can mature quickly, it is hard to think that you might have a lot of corn that won’t make it out of the field because it will get too hard on the cob. Can you make silage out of sweet corn? When I see that kind of kale, I always wonder if big farmers like you all have problems with aphids. I know those crinkly leaves make wonderful hiding places for aphids under the leaves.

You could make silage out of sweet corn. Not many do it because there isn't much tonnage there. We fend the spent corn to pigs or cows

I so enjoy your videos. It's great to see a family dedicated to each other and to growing the best food you can. I think that is a lot to do now, just the investment in capital and time is far above what most people are required to lay out for their living. I salute you for keeping us all alive.

My produce from the garden has been absolutely phenomenal this year. Massive cabbages, tomatoes are early and heavy. Peppers were large. Great year so far Edit. I'm the same way. Corn leaves have small barbs and actually have cut up my arms picking it. I used to pick bins of ears years ago and by the end of it, I would be soaked and itchy. I'd change into dry clothes and move on with the day. Fox tail is the same way with me.

I wish you would change your saying because you are demeaning your own work and the work of all farmers. Farming "IS" something and yes, it is honest work - but if anyone really believes it's easy to be a farmer, they've simply never done it. Farmers are the backbone of the American grocery stores. That's a lot!
