I thought it was that the plates are individual, thus they all form gashes by being separate and having thus having gashes in between. This is one of my favorite sketches. Everything RC does with the Crypt Keeper is gold, but this one is especially hilarious. And the little head-waggle as he says “I’m a shell of a man” is so subtle and very well animated.

A few things to note: 1) That's a pretty nondescript car for the Crypt Keeper to be driving. 2) He didn't make that exact pun, as it replaced a different word. 3) Note how some of the Monster High students took his side at the end, based on their clapping.
