Mahi Mahi starts at 3:56
Fishing out of Pokai bay on Oahu. With my final akule (goggle eye) I managed to catch this 24lb Mahi mahi after being on the water for 7 hours. Initially I thought it was an aha but was so happy to see a mahi in the water.

Quick Question - do the tiger sharks ever mistake your drive system on that Hobie for a sea turtle and grab the boat? They look so much like turtle fins.

I can only speak for myself, but I have never had a tiger shark hit or bump my kayak. That would be so terrifying if a tiger shark grabbed on to the kayak. More than likely it would puncture the plastic, but maybe they would just rip off the rudder or bait tube. In general they usually just cruise by at 10-15ft away. Sandbar sharks have ran into my kayak. After they eat a tuna close to the surface (50ft) they often come up to the kayak looking for anything to eat.

How are you liking the Fierce Live Liner? After some activity, I’ve always let it free spool, tightened the drag, felt the bait run with my fingers, and then reengaged. Old school, but that’s how we grew up doing it without a bail wire on the piers in FL.

I really like the live liner and prefer it over my lever drag conventional. The only down side is that it dose not hold a ton of line. Since the live liner has two drags, I use the main drag set for fighting the fish, and the secondary drag at the lowest setting. The lowest setting allows the fish to take drag if it is nervous or being chased. Once a fish grabs my bait I will allow 5 -10 seconds (to let the fish eat my bait) before putting the reel into gear. I used the same method as you mentioned before getting the live liner.

You truly live in a Paradise. Nice catch and will outstanding on the grill. Congrats and I want a Hobie so so bad. I paid a deposit on a Native and it was on back order for almost a year and all they would tell was they are a small company. I finally got my money back and kinda gave up. Now I can’t afford one like I want.

What’s up man, killer footage. Was curious as to why you don’t use a stinger? Definitely would increase the hook ups. And if you use mono/fluoro, I wouldn’t really hinder the opelu and akule’s action. You’re slaying fish though! Awesome footage

Thanks Roberto! The main rod I use for pelagic fishing is an ugly stick tiger elite jigging rod 6'6" heavy action. I have that paired with a penn fierce live liner 6000 size reel. ru-vid.com

Mahi is my favorite pelagic to catch and eat. The meat is hard to mess up. It doesn’t dry out like Marlin or Ono. Great mild taste.

Al Petkiewicz they are outstanding marinated and grilled. Should try it. Most say Wahoo are the best but I didn’t like the texture of the Wahoo.

Well it gets really rough out there. I have launched off Kualoa regional park and went out through the kualoa channel. You can also go out of the sanpan channel. Both spots I have been out in in 10 ft plus swells. Not a place to mess around or learn. You can learn fishing out of pokai bay without much danger.

Mahi is really mild tasting. I’ve had most every fish in Hawaii and Mahi is my favorite. I suppose you could compare it to Wahoo (Ono) but Mahi is more mild than that. It stands alone. You just have to try it. Aloha.

Today I lost a giant opelu to an aha, at Maili point, at the same depth, and after an hour of drifting. Very frustrating!

Aha are such a pain. I generally try to avoid them by put baits in at 220ft. I have caught a aha in 240 ft though.

Outside of the major and minor bite times you will get a lot of aha, kaku, sharks, and the occasional kawa kawa. Sometimes you can see aha flying out of the water when chasing bait fish. If you do I would take the bait out of the water and change spots.

Kaleo Keliikoa I use the fish finder to find bait. After catching bait I mostly use the gps to get to the right depth. After that it isn’t really necessary but it still helps to not fish blindly.

Big eye scad, goggle every place calls them a different name. Just like mahi is wahoo also Ono in hawaiian

at the 11:08 mark you can see something in the distance in the back of your mahi.. looks kind of big.. could of been another mahi or a tax collector

Yeah man. That looks pretty sharky. I have been sharked a couple of times but not right at the kayak. I remember drifting into shallower water throughout the fight. I know sharks are everywhere, but I generally get sharked in less than 150'.

Nice footage and Mahi. A word of advice be careful not to mention spots buddy, it could rub some people in the wrong way. Also when pronouncing hawaiian fish names. O- Pell- LU (mackerel scad) not O-pey-lu ;)
