I grew over 300 lbs of potatoes in my garden this year! I tried the Ruth stout method vs the in grown method covered in hay.. I show you in the video from seed to harvest what I did step by step and why.
Also why not add in another test.
I also show you how I cure and store the potatoes and my cold room '' Root Cellar''.

This year I planted some potatoes in the fall, together with the garlic (as guardians lol). The potatoes sprouted nicely this spring. Quick note to tell you that a little (or a lot of) green on the potato has no bearing on the ability of the potato to sprout. While poisonous for humans, the potato can be used as seed potato with no problem. (And even for humans, only the green part is with problems, you can very well cut it out and eat the rest).

My grandfather decided to become a farmer right after he married. He grew enough to support his family. By the time I came around he was officially retired so he only grew enough for him and grandma plus our family of 8. We lived across the field from him and took care of raising all the meat and doing the harvesting. The reason we didn't do more of the gardening was that he didn't want us messing up his gardens which were beautiful. During my lifetime he never had a crop fail; we never ran out of anything he grew. So I would say he was a pretty good farmer. One thing that I find interesting was that he never rotated any crop. Lots of manure was brought over to the gardens and worked into the soil when it was dry or just applied when it was wet (winter). By spring there was plenty of straw and manure that had aged over the winter in place and he would till multiple times. I don't see a problem with putting the potatoes in the same place. You have yourself a good harvest.
@BobRooney290
@BobRooney290 Год назад
i think the whole reason to rotate crops is for nutrient restoration. if you are adding manure, then the nutrients are being restored that way.

So, i have somewhat sandy rocky soil that i have been putting seaweed on all fall and winter and had it rototilled. No other fertilizer this year. Anyway, i planted my potatoes with my grand daughter in loose soil covering them with straw and they have not only sprouted quicker than in previous years but the plants are getting huge so far! I cant wait to see how big they grow. I also copied your carrot seed in cornstarch method and that works well also. I live in Maine so pretty similar growing season to my Canadian neighbors up North. Thanks Eva!

So Happy to see your harvest come out so well :) Last year the hay method worked great for me. This year, I made a potatoe garden, gave it time and energy to get very little put of it. My take on it is that as a mother potatoe it just wants to be left alone in the hay. That's all it wants! Just to be alone fpr a little while!🤣😂🤣

I was really inspired by the different methods you've trialled. I've got an allotment in the UK, growing zone 7 or 8. I've left my potatoes until just before Christmas in the ground. The downside of that is that slugs and other bugs eat away at them and quite a few end up in the compost - but I don't have anywhere to store them. There are usually plenty potatoes left in the ground that I haven't found and the grow back the next year. Maybe I should trial leaving potatoes in the ground, saves me planting come spring time :-)
@MarkSmith-qk2rl

As a seed producer in the states The problem with replanting is it allows for certain pests and insect to build up. You don’t find places we’re natural regrowth is present because of that very problem !! On your seed potatoes anything over the size of a large hen egg is a total wast of seed. Some of those beautiful whole potatoes you’re planting you could easily get 5-6 seeds ! The bigger potato doesn’t mean you can’t get the same growth from a golf ball sized one from the same plant. The genetics is in the plant not the potatoes if that makes sense. Hope this helps.

I tried the Ruth Stout method, and while easier, it gave mice easy access to eat all the potato tops. Years ago I planted some leftover potatoes for winter and some did sprout nice crops the next year, others died. It was hit and miss with them. Now I stick to inground planting despite my clay soil.

Have you tried to keep your potatoes and the dark they won't sprout

Yes the Cold room is completely dark and closed off. It just isn't cold enough as it is not 100% finished. Work in progress as you saw :) The potatoes were very good to eat even if sprouted though.

Wow...Those are really nice Taters...I'm in Georgia with a long growing season and I have never growed any Taters that huge. And we have a long growing season. I personally believe that taters actually prefer a cooler climate and grow better in cooler soils. But whatever you're doing, seems to be working great.
