Hello Woody Thank you for the time and effort and willingness to share . I relish the videos on the MODX as videos like these show what one can accomplish... Truly inspiring Thank you so much ....
Nice job, perfect amount of detail, taking your time to walk through things. I have the same combo of keyboard and editor SW, and I picked up some really useful tips and shortcuts on using the editor. Since the MODX does have such great and easy editing capability via the touch screen, I do find myself just editing on the touchscreen, but the John Melas products have always been great as he has some really intuitive layout for all the data. And special thanks for showing how to stop the drum parts from playing from the keyboard!! That’s thwarted me for years. I’m inspired to go make some Performances!
you're welcome. i got the software when i had plans to make my own soundbank for download, so the software would have helped me out, but never got around to it.!
Great tutorial. Thank you very much. Is it possible to have the bass and the pad on the same keys with the arpeggiator playing both parts instead of having to use the left hand at two locations when a chord change is required? How will the arpeggiator handle the bass part if a full chord is played with the left hand?
'Woodeleven' The RX11 is a great choice, It was Yam's 1st proper drum machine, Still have mine, Vince Clarke used it on the first 2 Erasure albums. Again another great job Woody, love your videos.
Hey thanks for the vid! One question: How can set the patch remain on performance mode with my "user" sounds? Whenever I switch from one patch to another, the sound stop sounding (ofc I'm talking when I'm pressing a key or I'm holding the sustain pedal)
Great video Woody! This video reminded me I have a software editor option for my Yamaha MX49. Much of what you programmed here can be done on the MX series as well. Without the software editor the MX49 is limited to two voices layer or split....but I don't go near a computer for music unless I am doing pro work. My job is computer intensive, graphic design, so all on the computer I ....create art, paint, photo-retouch, animate, video edit, hand code websites, typeset, design, build dies and cartons and labels...all on the computer....so when it comes to music I am all synth/keyboard hardware including a hardware 24 track recorder.
@@synthverkstad2093 YEA!! I am very excited about the MODx 8 oscillator sound design possibilities. Looks like you made a good purchase and a good point. I have thoughts of buying a MODx61, but forgot that I will not need my MX49 anymore if I get one, so with the sale my MX49 the MODx won't be as expensive as first thought. Thank you.
very interesting information, many thanks. I have a Yamaha MODX 8+ and am very happy with it. What I don't like that much, quite objectively, is the almost untraceable on/off button on the back of the Modx. Second is the "knocking sound" that comes from pressing the keys a little hard - I think that's because the Modx's case is plastic. That's too bad
Thanks for making it real Woody! Please keep going - make it a series... maybe add scenes to vary the arps and then dig into the superknob as a finale! Yamaha should sponsor you to create more videos that show the reality of editing their kit which is soooo complex. Thanks again!
Thanks for the great comment and the feedback! You are right, we are only just scratching the surface here. Yes I should really reach out to Yamaha with your suggestion.;(
The bassline reminded me of John Carpenter's music for Escape from NY , the lead is a whole different story. Maybe, "Escape from Miami" as it could've well been music played in the tv-series from the 1980's. However it's been over 2 months.. and I'm very curious, what do you call it now? ;-)
I admit I kind of glanced through this video. Unless I missed something, it's just basic splits setup. I wanted to mention that is a very straight forward task on the MODX or Montage touch screen, no special computer software really needed. I found it very easy & intuitive to setup basic splits & layers right from the front panel. I did notice the arpegiators to choose from showed up in the software however. I under the MODX/Montage have "thousands" of arpegiators included. I have not been able to find "thousands" via navigating through the touch screen as I have with regular instruments. What might I be doing wrong? I'm not likely to use them too often, but would like to browse through them.
Hi dear friend Woody, A very nice video and great improvisation.I realy enjoyed the way you showed us how it is possible for anyone, to make its own perf, in an "easy way" (as much as it could be), with this John Melas ' new soft.I realy like the 80's spirit of this perf - It reminds me a bit some stranger things' tracks!! need in my opinion another kit drum (may be analog one)This little MODx is realy impressive!!- aAke care and keep it this way!Greets.Mysterio FTS
For 3 years now I am using Montage. All the functions and features I explored so far work well, however at the arpeggio part I am struggling. There are 3 types of arpeggio: fixed , normal and original notes. The fixed note function works well with the drums, but with any other instrument channel, like a bass or any other instrument which has chord patterns, all the three functions mentioned about is not accurate. If the chord changes are not 100% in time and on the first beat of the bar, than the notes from the pattern are shifted and come later. However, in the user memory of the instrument, I found an arpeggio type, that works just like what I would like to do. For example, with MA_8Beat Slow_C arpeggio it does not matter on what beat I am changing the chords, all the instruments come smoothly in the right time from the arpeggio pattern, without any note shift and independent from the midi note length. My question is, how could I create an arpeggio like MA_8Beat Slow_C on my instrument?
Control "z" on the PC is almost a universal undu...if you wish to try. A great companion video to this wonderful video is; BoBeats has a video where he is sound designing on the MODx's 8 oscillator synth. Patch name for your design Woody....THE FEARLESS HOPEFUL
thanks, had already bashed those keys before hunting for it in the menu. nope! might be aomplicated to implement as the synth is updating in real time, but would have saved me more than a few times
A question Does the modx have hold function for arpeggi? Meaning when you take your finger off it continues to play. If there is I cant find one. If there isn't then its disappointing from Yamaha.
@@nicolasarianos9731 easy! the modx have the arp hold. find in the manual about this. hummm... into to select part (for example: part 1) > edit > arpeggio > common > hold (select on). Its over.
@@josueojeda1483 There is even a shortcut to enable Arp Latch (or hold) in the Performance Home Screen: hold SHIFT when pressing the desired part's ARP button on the touchscreen. This activates the ARP for the part, and also the hold/latch option.
This one had a lot of potential; but you have to ensure the screens are in focus, kinda worthless without being able to see them. Do keep up these types of videos though; would be very helpful if you fix the screen shots; suggest capture software so you're not using a camera to capture them.
i used screen capture here, but zoomed in for those of you that are watching from a distance, or on a small device, that can make it a bit blurry, yes! :)
Hi Woody. Brilliant as usual. But....may I send you a Birthday or chrismas gift in form of a proper Stand for your Monitor and Keyboard instead of this Boxes? I used Boxes too for 20 years...but once you get a better thing....it hurts to see the wobbly past...^^ Greetings from Germany!
you're very kind, thanks! actually the biscuit tin has become a bit of a "thing", and viewers would be disappointed if I replaced it with something professonal!
@@WoodyPianoShack Yeah, I definitely see the charm in this. And it fits...but the keyboard...that's not healthy, ergonomically spoken...and must be annoying AF to change your body position for typing ;-) And, be honest, how often do you knock over the keyboard (and with it your coffee?) accidently...and you are out of the Zone ;-) I recommend a laptop or even just a tablet stand that you can bend....I also always thought "superfluous snick snack" until I noticed that my keyboard suddenly "is no longer in the way"... the effect in the workflow is like .... Do you remember the time before the TV remote control? In your parents' living room? ;-) And your Dad told YOU to switch the channel "when the Game has begun?" 5 $ that will improve everything And...somehow, at least for me, easy on the eye is easy in the flow. (Damn. I really missed a career in selling office supplies, right? LOL) Its like Johns's MODX Editor..speaking of...what was I am looking for..ah..Programming Arpeggios ;-)
I downloaded free version of this software. The second track and others are always grey out. Is it my MODX doing that or is it because the software is in DEMO? Great video. I guess Yamaha should be including their keyboards a software like this one. The motif, Moxf and MX keyboards had software similar to this one.
Hi there, your vids are always a pleasure to watch! Any ideas how to dial-in the standard arpegios, like "up" - "'down" - "as played" etc (ie skip the gazilion pre-arranged arps..)? Like for a simple bass line on the spot, without using editor etc...Thanks!
great question, well the modx def has those too, but how to find them, I have no clue and mine is not available at the mo! download the data list from yamaha, and you can check what's available
Good job sharing this information. You explain it in terms that are easy for us "non-technical" players. I've been aware of this tool for a while now but afraid of buying it because it might be too complicated. Thank you for doing this video.
this dates back to the days when I gigged live, and if close to the audience they would peer at the screen to see the patch name, which was usually the name of the song, so do avoid spoilers I would always choose something a bit naughty... old habit, that's actually true!
hello Woody, iv just got my modx6 and john melas modx tools...i wanted to make a performance just like you do here but with custom sounds and drum kits...is there any way to make the performance editor use the custom user sounds and kits that i made with samples? regards
Can you make a demo video showing how to to create a song step by step using the scenes, style parts, drums, bass, etc,, arps, rhythms, patterns sequencer, etc?
you mean with the software or on the screen? I don't enjoy poking around too much on the screen, so I tend just to use the presets, and an external midi sequencer, but yeah, should give it another shot.
Thoroughly enjoyed this Woody. Thank you. As a hobbyist Genos player I don't understand a lot of what you're doing, but I love the sounds!. For me, your composition evoked a rainy night-time walk through a metropolis, looking in the bright entrances, but not being a part of it. "Lonely in Rainville". Bit weak but I hope it may spark some thoughts in others more gifted than I
Hi woody I,am trying to make that fun repeating vox organ in girls just wanna have. Down loaded the editor. How can I make this repeating jumpy organ :) please help
Thanks for the great videos. I'm looking to create performances with multiple scenes with multiple sounds... Can you save multiple multipart instruments as scenes??? Using your video I've mastered scenes for single parts either with mute or keyboard assign to create fluidity but when I attempt to do this with the many great multi-part sounds it doesn't work. I carefully follow the same process but many of the parts don't play and I get a basic sound. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong?
Hi Woody!! Great video! I’m a proud owner of a MODX7. However, assembling a performance proved challenging since the “nice” sounds have multiple parts spread across different tracks. Did you just use sounds that take up one track (like the ones labeled with green letters)? For example, the CFX piano takes up 4 tracks. If I want to layer a pad, I have to assign it on track 5. This is very inefficient as you might imagine. Any advise?
Do you know if the john melas tools are able to parse library files and allow me to create new libraries? I would like to "merge" patches from 3 different libraries in a new one, so I can save space :)
In general I prefer editing on instrument itself. Even on JV-1080. It brings me a flow of inspiration not to stare into computer screen all the time :) and it's a kind of challenge. Anyway... Thank you for this video! :)
What a DEMOOOOO!!!! Thank you so much for this - I don't have the keyboard yet but considering to upgrade to it. You've truly been an inspiration and god bless you for that. Big fan - cheers!
Hi Woody. Thank you for your upload which explains a great deal about the software, but I wonder if you could help with an issue here. I've had my MODX6 for about two years now, I've tried on various occasions just to be able to link to my computer. I now have the latest update within the Modx Synth itself Version 2.52 and I've also downloaded from the Yamaha Sight the latest Steinberg Driver Version 2.04 which is now on my Windows-10 Computer. No matter all the options I have tried in the past and even now on a brand new computer it says that it does not recognise the USB device and that something must be wrong. I have two other different link cables and it says exactly the same. I have on countless times over the past uninstalled the driver restarted the PC, reinstalled the Driver, Re-started the PC. I Tried an older driver with the exact same problem, tried it on my laptop and still the same problem, a tech friend of mine tried last year on his computer and could'nt manage to get anything more than myself, but did say, either my Synth had a Fault, or the software has a fault. I then used the exact same lead and plugged in my Roland JDXI and within seconds it installed the driver straight away, I then tried my Roland AX and again it found the driver and installed within seconds, The same with the Roland Edge, loaded within a minute or two the editor for the original AX synth, but for some reason Yamaha seems to be the only one with a problem. I've checked various forums and found that many people are having the same problems, all of us have been following suggestions as to how to overcome this only to find that none of it works. On the MODX I have the Midi set to USB. It's a shame as I would be more than happy to get the paid version of the John Mellas Software, it would make programming so much more easier and quicker to get ideas down. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, maybe I am just overlooking something. I'm always impressed by your uploads and tests and this is noe exception. Thumbs up and Kind Regards. Geoff Dean
i'm sorry geoff, it sounds like you have tried everything, and it seems you are doing everything right. maybe reach out to yamaha, or the author of the editor? i had no issues myself...
Hi Woody. Thank you for reply. An Update to the last message. Out of curiosity I found an older shorter lead which I connected and would you believe that it found the device staight away, I've had to remove the keybard from my rack and its a little awkward where I now have it positioned, but at least I now know that for some reason the cable was the culprit, but odly it works perfectly with all my Roland Gear. Thanks once again and thank you too for all the tutorials. Regards. Geoff
Hi woody. Thanks for the video. Am considering buying this synth. Does it not come with its own editing software like did the motif xs and xf? Is it only the 3rd part melas software that's available for it?
Not had my Montage long but your demo was more or less what I aspire to.Its still very complex and confusing but these videos are essential watching-Great stuff.
Finally someone who shows the power of the MODX. It's a shame though that one need to buy a 3.party program from John Melas, -Such a big failure that Yamaha doesn't provide such at simple utility program -shame on you Yamaha!!...-But very nice job Woody, more please :-)
That is amazing,Sounds like the beginning of a Phil Collins track of 2019 , Now I have to buy a new keyboard. That is a complete sequence it just needs some vocals, but I sure love my Fantom X8.
Just brilliant Woody, I can't wait to reduce my neck pain from bending over that little screen and get to programming the modx in a much more efficient way. I was thinking just recently why the heck don't Yamaha link to the PC like this, and here is being done by John Melas. Thanks for posting.
HELP. Fairly new to the Montage but I've hit a snag. Just loaded Montage 3.0 and in doing so appear to have lost my Phat Anologue,Chill and FM Xperience update library. Any idea??
Thanks for this Woody, I was planning to sell my MODX8 just because I don't know how to work the bloody thing! I may just reconsider after watching this! Brilliant stuff.
@@jm6734 Yeah for me it's overly complicated and I find myself getting lost in menus, nowhere near as user friendly as the PC editing...that, I could actually understand! But then this is my first synth and I probably haven't given it a proper chance. Although I find even the manuals overwhelming. Yeah there are a lot of patches, mostly weird and not that usable imo, that's why I was keen to make my own.
@@xp50player Indeed! how could I forget and it has all the supernatural sounds as well and all the original JV/XP patches. woody has a good side by side demo of it with the JV...thanks unusual that it slipped my mind the integra
@@xp50player thanks , I would want the jv patches exactly as they are as I love the JV patches even the stock ones. what do you have to say about the rumour that the old JV-1080's filters sound warmer. I cant comment as I have never heard the the XV's and fantoms that came after the JV/XP generation to make the comparison..
greatly informative. May I ask... Are you recording your MODX sounds into a DAW via USB or the stereo out as audio through an external interface? Two weeks down the line I still cannot get a simple (no midi) audio performance into Cubase via the USB interface. The connection between Cubase and MODX is extremely complicated for a low computer savvy player. Any suggestions???
hi, an external interface, simply because i need to record synth & mic at the same time, otherwise modx usb more convenient, you shouldn't have any issues there!
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks for reply Woody. There must be a simple enough solution to my problem. I am wondering if there is a USB conflict with another USB sound device. Will re-install MODX driver and start again.
Hi Woody, I like your clips, but I've got a problem with the bass sound; when I turn on my Arp, I have the same octaf all over the keyboard and the range is gone. Have you any idea what this can be?
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks Woody. I started all over again, and it's fine with the default arp, but from the moment I change it to the Bass(Mg)MA_8Beat Med_C the problem is there.
Wow this is great Woody! tbh I didn't really care much for the programming as I don't own a modX, but the performance at the end was superb! Yeah maybe a missed chord, but I loved the mood you created in the patch. Keep it up!
@@WoodyPianoShack If I select a single piano patch that has 4 different elements (Sampled in diff parts of the keybed) and I want a single arp. Do I have to assign the same arp 4 diff times? kind of a pain
you all probably dont care but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost my login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
This is great . Ive downloaded this . I have a problem though , when I select a second sound it doesn't light up and I cannot change key ranges etc . Don't know what I'm doing wrong
