Presenting a big compilation video! This is all of the BNSF trains I caught on the MRL that had nothing to do with MRL power (helpers & MRL trains) during my many days on the line. It includes the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Subs and specifically all of the content takes place between Paradise MT on the 4th Sub and Big Timber MT on the 2nd Sub.
Recording equipment used:
-DJI Inspire 2 (Zenmuse X5S)
-Samsung Galaxy S10
Music is used from Soundstripe.
Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed!

Just finished watching your video of the pumpkins on the MRL, soon to be the MRL Sun on the BNSF. In my opinion this is America’s overall most-scenic route. If you’re interested, the only Bakken crude oil trains that operate on the MRL originate or terminate at Eland, ND or Fryburg, ND. Nice catch on the Q trains and thanks for pointing out the former Milwaukee row. Your reputation of excellence continues!

In the spring of 1977, I put a few thousand dollars into my backpack, hopped on my 10-speed, and headed for Big Sky Country, Mt, Id Ore, Wa. Northern Ca, and Colorado. I stopped in Mass, to see a friend that use to live in Maine, the same town as me. Within 3 days of arriving at his house, I met the girl that I instantly knew that I was going to marry. A few years ago, after 40 years of marriage, I lost her to cancer. One of my daughters asked me, why not go west. I told her the west is a young man's game. My body is broken and fat and has no need to be there, as painful as that is to admit. However, I can live there vicariously thru videos like yours. I never made it west, but who knows, if there is something on the other side, I may yet see the west someday. Thank you for another great video.

That's a great story Ken but I'm so sorry you lost her to cancer... Well I would say if you ever did have the chance to make it out West and you wanted the best region to see a good amount of trains and spectacular scenery then the Columbia River Gorge would be my one recommendation. I myself have become burnt out on the Columbia Gorge but it is quite the sight for one who hasn't seen it. Thanks a lot Ken!

Wonderful video, Dan! I enjoyed watching all these BNSF trains on the Montana Rail Link Subdivisions. You caught a couple of Santa Fe Warbonnet engines on a couple of the trains. I wonder how often one can see a BNSF train powered by all Canadian National engines like that tank car train that you caught in this video. The scenery was beautiful! Thank you for compiling this video for our enjoyment. of BNSF trains on the Montana Rail Link.

Thanks a lot Thomas! I was excited for some of the uncommon units I caught and I think the most excited about that NS leader in the canyon. That CN oil train was a surprise even to my BNSF engineer buddy I took the trip with.

The pumpkins looks great here. You even caught the Microsoft Train Simulator engine and two old Warbonnets. Of course the foreign locomotives are very nice too. The CN oil train is very impressive. As always the locations are gorgeous. My favourite is the last at 44:50. I love bridges and trestles. Excellent video again Dan, I really enjoyed this long movie. 😄

Thank you Z! Yeah I was pretty excited about the MSTS unit. I tried to get as close as I could to the decal so it was easy to see. I think my favorite scene was the NS leader in the canyon at Toston Dam. Well I guess that's obvious being the thumbnail!

Beautifull video but I would prefer more train sounds specially when you are flying near or close to the lead locos , thanks for these super shot .

Thank you! Unfortunately with drones there is no option to capture audio because all you would hear would be the buzzing of the propellers sounding like an angry bees nest. That is the big reason I try to shoot some video from the ground level with a camera on a tripod to get some kind of train audio to add to the mix.

@@louisletourneau3429 You're welcome! Any drone videos you see with audio is seperate audio added to the video. I have done that myself as well on multiple occasions and it's very neat but it can double or even triple my edit times on videos. I also have to take extra time out in the field to record the audio and hope I can match it well enough to the video to sound like what you're watching. It's all around time consuming.

By far one of my favorites now - the first 10 mins scenery had me hooked! How many trains use this single line daily in your estimation ?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
Thank you Joe! I was pretty impressed myself with that first afternoon on the 4th Sub right in the beginning. That Tunnel 10 shot was one I had really wanted so I knew it was going to be a good trip getting that right away. As far as I know the BNSF has to try and guarantee the MRL 35 trains a day on the system and if they can't provide that then there is some kind of money that has to be paid to MRL. That is the main reason one doesn't go too long without seeing a train on the line. So on average if you are going for volume of trains it would be easy to see anywhere from 12 to 20+ in the daylight. Sometimes they will even run trains that would usually take the Hi Line up North down on the MRL just to help meet that 35 train quota.

I wonder what will happen to all the Montana Rail Link locomotives once BNSF retakes control of those tracks, whether they will be leased from BNSF or purchased directly by BNSF.

Awhile back I saw some video of a train derailment in Montana that had dumped some of that airplane fuselage in the river. Geez, this couldn't have been the same train, was it?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
That would have been a different train. The ones with fuselages aren't all that uncommon. I think there is maybe a shipment of them to Boeing in Western Washington once or twice a week, maybe more?

Last I knew they run on the weekend being Klamath to Alturas on Saturday and then Alturas back to Klamath on Sunday. I do believe this is still current today.

Dan, at 28:49, do you have a telescopic microphone, or is that the "canyon/mountain" effects amplifying the train horns? So much good stuff on this one. 👍🫠 Fun fact: Bill Gates has controlling stock in CN Rail.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
I have just been using a short cheap shotgun mic with all the ground shots but the horn really was quite loud in the canyon even in person. I was really happy with how it turned out especially with the echo.
