I used to fish the salmon runs from Lake Ontario every year. I'd see guys sliding one hand up to the first line guide while fighting a big salmon, and warn them that you break rods that way. Sometimes they'd snarl "I'll fight my fish any goddamned way I want!!" Later, you'd see them walking back to their car with a broken rod, giving you a glare that said "Don't you say one word!"
