Cattleman Cal Brennan (William Devane ) and the accountant Robert Slocum (John Michael Higgins) in discussion about an incident between some cowhans working for them and a railroad crew. A scene from the 2003 TV movie 'Monte Walsh', starring Tom Selleck, Isabella Rossellini and Keith Carradine. It's based on a novel by the author of Shane, Jack Schaefer, and directed by Simon Wincer, best known for the Lonesome Dove miniseries.

William Devane is brilliant in this scene. His definition of who and what a cowboy is the most eloquent I've seen in a western, and his final jab to the accountant at the end of his monologue is a great payoff. This is a very underrated western.

As much as I now despise William Devane for the constant assault several times a day about gold, I must admit that it was good to see him in this clip - he did a great job selling it.

Most saddles from this time period had higher backs such as the one you mention. It's one way to determine the authenticity of the production.

@@dlarta7265 yeah. I saw Marvin version in movies back in the day and it stuck with me. Selleck is very well done. Wish he'd give up playing cops and saddle up
