The direct answer to the Vuelta’s a España’s Alto de l’Angliru, it wasn’t until 2003 that the mighty Monte Zoncolan claimed worldwide notoriety when the Giro d’Italia used it for the first time, although on that occasion it was from the “easier” eastern approach from Sutrio. Four years later and it was back with a vengeance as the race unveiled the 10.2km monster, with ramps up to 22%, from Ovaro. Highly regarded as the toughest climb in Europe by the professionals, Gilberto Simoni summed the climb up perfectly, “It’s like a slow execution, the easiest part of the Zoncolan is harder than the most difficult at the Tour”. Go under an hour from start to finish and you’re on serious fire, to put it in perspective on that day Simoni covered the climb in a mind bending 39 minutes (so obviously not quite as slow an execution for ‘Soignor Zoncolan’ as he was nicknamed after winning twice on the mountain) as it is for the rest of us!
I’ve been fortunate to ride some amazing mountains throughout the world and so far I’ve never come across anything like the Zoncolan, it just keeps going and pushing you, you’re questioning your sanity the whole way up, thinking to yourself ‘why am I doing this?’ And then 400 metres from the top it completely opens up, you see the views behind, there’s mountain peaks, a little bit of baby blue sky and everything makes sense again. Savour every second, the Zoncolan is one of the true greats of cycling!
Start: Ovaro
Length: 10.2km
Summit: 1,750m
Elevation gain: 1,225m
Average gradient: 11.9%
Max gradient: 22%
Ridden in June

Monte Zoncolan di Ovaro has to be one if not the most epic climbs in road cycling - it is ... terrifyingly difficult - sure every climb seems to be classified that way but those words are devoid of any and all hype - I have climbed it once which in hindsight was a bit of a reprieve because you really do not know what awaits you - now that I know I am not rushing to go back - sure I hope to climb it again but it is almost pure psychological intimidation that you need to overcome to prepare yourself for THAT once again - every climb has its nasty gradient soup sections - Zoncolan seems to have been created by including every nasty gradient soup section back-back in succession from base to summit - you truly need to be prepared for that eventuality because once it hits you it just comes in wave after wave after unending wave - even when you get to the last 1km to go to the summit you expect it to ease up but it doesn't ... take this climb seriously - you MUST prepare for it or you will simply fail in an attempt made by fools - the biggest thing I soon learned to fear on the climb was a 15-20m "respite" where it dipped under 10% because I knew that a hammer-like wall of 20+% was coming up next to make up for the mountain gods "gift" - it took me 1:25:44 to summit a 10.686KM ride - often the speedo was under 5km with gravity wobbles - damn nature you scary

One of the best of my life. Just made five times since 2015 and i'm gonna make the sixt next week. Watch up: is not as simple as you show: it's very harder. A crazy, terrible suffering alla over the ten km. A wonderful joy. Great video.

I watched this beautifully shot video to prepare myself mentally for this climb (i'm 50), and I did it yesterday without stops. It's so hard and relentless, the last 2km are magical and much easier, I sprinted the last 100m to the top. Thanks, Mike for these videos.

Amazing video of an amazing climb! Brings back all the memories of climbing it in 2014. As you said, there is nothing else like it. I had trouble keeping my front wheel on the asphalt on the steepest (22%) sections. The climb took me 1h16min, for just 10k! I thoroughly enjoyed riding it though, just a shame it's so remote ;). Thanks for showing us this, Mike & crew!

+drewmorgan I did it with mostly 34/27.. there are a few places where you can shift for a bigger gear. It took me approximately 62 minutes, starting from the main road in Ovaro (10,2 km at 11.6%). And it was painful indeed :)

Another superb video with beautiful photography (drones!) but a road that looks more brutal than I imagined in spite of watching the Giro on television and seeing the pros struggle. I am a huge fan of Michael Cotty who is not only disturbingly fit but has found a unique niche in cycling, untainted by all the controversies surrounding the professionals.

Asking for a friend... can the double be done in a day? Ovaro-Sutrio-Ovaro? Has anyone tried the road from Priola? Is the treble, a la Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux, even possible for a pro? I am from Sutrio. I rode up the Zoncolan on a mountain bike when I was 11 years old before the Giro ever knew anything about it. I promptly crashed on the way down and I still have scars on the kneecaps where I left my skin on the tarmac... I am asking for a friend who is coming to visit.
@Tourrider99
@Tourrider99 8 лет назад
Awesome work Mike! Just for reference, what gear ratios were you using? If pros are using 34x28, then mere mortals like us will have to resort to triple or even mountain bike. In fact I remember hearing Cipollini asking for a mountain bike when Giro first tackled Zoncolan from the other side, supposedly easier side back in the 90s. Also, if you can give us your average power or speed for the climb, then it will give us some perspective of how difficult this climb is. One of the must do's before I die... Keep up the great work!
@TheColCollective
@TheColCollective 8 лет назад
+Tourrider99 I was using a 34x28 and definitely needed it. You're right, Cipo climbed on a mountain bike (but that was more for publicity as he had no chance of winning a sprint that day). Average power and speed is a bit tricky to work out as I have to ride a few sections more than once during filming. If you can get anywhere near one hour from bottom to top then you're doing very well. That said, it's all about the ride, no matter on your time just getting to the top is the goal! Ride safe, Mike
@Tourrider99
@Tourrider99 8 лет назад
+The Col Collective Thank you so much for your input Mike. Wow, you did ride some sections more than once, all on 34x28? I now have so much more respect for your riding, not that I didn't have it before. Also, just goes to show to make a beautiful film, even though it is less than 10 minutes, it takes so much effort and time. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks Mike & crew!

Ah you weren't lying in your reply on another video, a Zoncolan video was coming! This climb is number one on my stupid climb list, although it does scare me that some of the pros need a 34×28 on it, I'm going to have to lose a load more weight than I thought....and gain a lot more power. Is this the hardest ascent? I believe there's three ways up it? Great videos Mike, always inspiring!

Hi Mike, which gear set did you use? 34x28? I mean, in the central part of the climb. Thank you.

Hi Gabriele, I was using a 34 x 28 and I definitely needed it. Zoncolan is a beast! Thanks for watching! Ride safe, Mike
