May 4, 2021 Part 8 One of the most dangerous roads in America! Monteagle Mountain on I-24 east-bound in Tennessee. And we drove it in the rain! But ignorance is bliss, as we didn’t even realize its reputation. Although the brake inspection station and run-away ramps were a pretty clear sign of the dangers of this 7 mile steep downhill stretch. But, after Kevin’s experience driving in Arizona and Colorado, he wasn’t phased at all! And neither was Tanja. Too busy being excited about the views and windshield getting cleaned.
There is a mandatory truck inspection area. Trucks have to weigh at a traffic metering signal before re-entering I-24. There is a vertical decent of 1,161 feet over 4 miles with a reported descent of 6%. There are two runaway truck ramps. Unfortunately, they are on the left side of the road, so getting to them can create a whole other dangerous situation with oncoming traffic.
I guess we haven’t listened to the right Johnny Cash songs, because he wrote a pretty grim song about Monteagle Mountain’s long steep grade. So find the song on the internet and then sit back and enjoy the ride with us! From the safety of your home.
