I feel like maybe it’s a little boy thing - I have an 18 month old boy too and no way he’d sit still for any of these things! If he can’t smash it, eat it or run around doing it he’s not interested 😂

Keep in mind that Ashley is only going to film the best example of her kids participating in the activity to share, because this is meant to be showing others how it can be used. I'm sure that there are times when the kids don't play properly, bit that isn't going to make it into a video!

So glad you label these so clearly in event we want to refer back to one or refer one to someone else for viewing. It is so refreshing to see a parent allowing a child to do their own problem-solving without letting them get completely frustrated. I think Mia is better at the towers than I would be. Has she discovered her shadow yet and reacted to it at all? Loved it when she was running after Kylie. Don't let your older sibling out of your sight, if you can help it. Loved how she checked in the watering can at the end to be sure it was empty. Hanging up her jacket and getting her shoes off and put away were really impressive. She did very well.

Sweeping using a mini broom, helping vacuum or mop, helping hang the laundry or take it back in when it’s dry, helping making breakfast (easy tasks like peel a banana, pour oats in a bowl, carry his breakfast to the dining table), helping fix things (for example holding something and observing while we fix), pouring out the kibbles for our cat and dog morning and evening (we told him he’s in charge of feeding his 2 siblings), playing with the cat using a fishing rod style cat toy, packing or unpacking a bag or suitcase, asking him to bring something to someone (look bring this thing to Mummy in the office)…

Hi Ashley! I'm a RIE based early childhood teacher with an interest in Montessori. A lot of the traditional teachings of Montessori I find are a bit too rigid for me, but man do I love Practical Life! Because it teaches children those life skills that they need to be empowered and independent. I think of RIE as the sister philosophy to Montessori, just with a more imaginative play based outlook and flexibility perhaps. We do all of these activities in your video in our classroom as part of our respectful curriculum. I love love your Montessori at Home series!

I am 26 and vividly remember my later 2s and all of my 3s. Montessori was a highlight for me. I especially needed a space that was calming, because my home wasn’t always child friendly. I appreciate all the memories I made there, and especially remember feelings of understanding and patience from Montessori teachers. Would adopt all of this for my future family. Thank you so much for these videos, they are inspirational and practical.

For presentations especially language ones, i strongly suggest leading with real objects first and omitting the matching cards as that can be really abstract for the child. I can see that your toddler can follow the rhythm of a work cycle but it is important to start with real objects followed by replicas (omitting matching cards) at first to analyse language level and skills and while doing that, it is important to sit with the child, to present how this is done and then walk away. Great Job implementing so many psycho sensory motor activities!!

I have two questions for you: 1. how old was Mia in this video? 2. is it possible to get a child whose baseline personality is a bit impatient and firey to concentrate and do a task? if so, are there any resources you can point me to? thanks again!

I love how she’s concentrating. My younger one is only a month less from mia and he also focus and do jao activities, however he’s also in the trajectory schema of throwing. So I have put away all the wooden toys. Now I don’t know how to let him explore. Secondly my year old won’t leave my 15 month old to explore and focus at all!!! I can’t keep them separately. As I have only one big space downstairs. I am testing to teach my older to not intervene however she just won’t understand and in fact feels I am focusing and paying more attention on him.

Great job Mia! This is one of my favorite series from you Ashley! Thank you so much for another great Montessori video! It is so fun watching Mia do all these activities that I have seen Kylie do in previous videos. Mia is getting so big! I loved when Mia removed the square puzzle piece and tried to put the rectangle piece in. That made me smile! I had a question for you if you don't mind. What do you do if you know your child has not mastered a skill but when you sit them down and show them how to do it and work with them they don't seem interested? I would appreciate your response whenever you have the time. No hurry! Thanks for all you do and the time you spend helping other Mama's out. I really appreciate it!

Montessori is all about following the child, so I would recommend waiting until your child shows an interest. I know there can be a lot of pressure to reach milestones and develop skills in a certain order or timeline, but each child really is individual, so try not to worry too much about "achievement."
@MC-ko2mx
@MC-ko2mx 4 года назад
Pretty much what Rachel said. Ashley has always emphasised following the child's lead. If they aren't interested in a particular activity, even if you have made it fun, attractive, and accessible, perhaps it's best to wait and re-introduce it at a later stage? They could simply be in a different schema, or not developmentally ready, which is perfectly normal.

Ashley, am I correct in assuming that you dont put a transfer activity on Mia's shelf but rather put the tray/activity on the table for her and invite her to do it? Or does Mia actually take the transfer activity from shelf to table and do it, all on her own? If the former, I'm trying to understand how frequently (once a day, etc) you her guide with this. Thanks.

You have to remember this is Montessori at home, not a Montessori environment. In homes, you will not see the materials etc. that you would see in a prepared non-home environment. In fact, you should not see the materials used in the environment in the home. For home life, this is a good reflection of Montessori in the home.

My kid is fascinated by new things... can't wait to try some of these. Of course, once the newness has worn off (after maybe a week) she's back to bouncing around from activity to activity in 3.5 seconds, and then getting into literally everything that she's not allowed to get into (Grandma's cupboards, the pantry, the pretties in the parlor, climbing on the table to try to watch TV on my computer, etc) Guess I just need to figure out a better routine for her...

Hey Ashley! My son is almost 17mo (16mo corrected as he was premature). I'm trying to implement some of these principles and activities with him, however his favourite activity is to pull everything off every shelf all at once and mix them all together - any tips for getting him to focus on one activity at a time?

Loved this! Can you do a video on 18-24 month activities or have a link to one you've done? I know Mia is not quite yet in that age group, but I have an almost 19 month old and would love to hear what you did with Kylie/what you plan to do with Mia. Thanks! I have learned so much from watching your videos over the last few months and am so glad I found you.

Hi!! I love this series of yours and I was hoping we would have another installment soon, 18 to 21 months. I even took your course because of my love of these activity suggestions. I keep looking out for the next upload but I have not seen any. Please let me know if you will be doing more videos like these. They have been so helpful to me.

Great activity ideas! Thank you for sharing 🙌🏻My boy turns 16 months next week, and I'm excited to try some of these activities. I have one question. For practical activities such as dry/wet pouring, how do you introduce them? I can't imagine having those on the shelf for my boy to just grab! Do you initiate those types of activities for them to try? If so, how would they ask for it next time? Thank you!

Generally in montessori, it's best to follow your child. If you are presenting things in an asthetically pleasing way and your child just isn't interested, they may not be ready for that activity. Or they may just be more interested in exploring it sensorially (mouthing). Or maybe they're more focused on gross motor so they crawl away! Don't worry about your child doing specific activities that you think as good for them. Present what you think they might enjoy or learn from, and give them space and opportunity. If they're genuinely uninterested after several days, just pack the toy up and try again in a few weeks! Your child's lead is always #1

I'm curious what a typical day looks like schedule-wise with this... Like wake up, independent play, chores, lunch... when do you switch out the toy that's being played with or are there multiples on one shelf to choose? My toddler is just SOOOOO impatient so it's hard to know how to introduce them to her
