I’m going to be 100% honest. I fully expected to feel terrible about myself as a mom after this video. However, I left feeling like everything you do is pretty accessible. It left me feeling empowered. I am so glad you were upfront about screen time. It’s so refreshing! Thank you for making this video 💜

If 1 hour of screen time is non-negotiable, do the girls ever watch feature-length movies? Would they watch them over multiple days? Thanks! Love your channel!😊
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 3 года назад
They usually don’t have an interest in watching full-length movies - they actually prefer the shorter shows with episodes. But we do have occasional “movie nights” as a family, which is more like a treat. And on those infrequent occasions, then it’s just a bit of extra screen time that day. ☺️ Most days, it’s just the 1 hour.

Hi, I’m having a 10 month old baby, she usually sleep at 11pm and I think it’s too late for a baby. Do you have any advice for re-schedule our daily routine?
@tahoorashaikh2573
@tahoorashaikh2573 3 года назад
I have a 10 month old too and he sleeps at about 6:30 and wakes up between 6-7am. I've read a little about how you can reschedule sleep timings, and I think the key is to gradually shift the bed time from 11pm to 7pm by shifting the bedtime routine slowly. I'm not sure if a sudden shift in the bedtime will be accepted by your 10 month old. So start by, 1. Getting a bedtime routine ( follow consistently) 2. Do the bedtime routine at approximately the same time everyday 3. Be ready for push back and then eventually for sleep regressions!

How old were the girls when this sort of routine emerged? My LO is 9 months and we still feel a little in baby survival mode most days.
@MariaandMontessori
@MariaandMontessori 3 года назад
We started implementing some aspects of this around 10 months-cleaning up, helping get undressed and picking out pj's at night, brushing hair in the morning, etc. I added one task at a time that she seemed to try reaching for whenever I did it. At 12 months now she's doing quite a bit on her own-adding a kitchen next to start food prep. The number of tasks she has been able to do increased exponentially -we went from baby survival to "don't touch me I'll do it" seemingly overnight 😅 She just started trying to do whatever I was doing and that was my cue to show and guide instead of do

You and your family are so inspirational. Thank you so much. Do you have any advice for guilt/anxiety over not applying Montessori much during the early years and too much screen time? My son is 4 and I feel like I failed him. Also, do you feel if you only had one child, she would have much more difficulty playing independently? I can't even imagine my son playing 20 minutes on his own let alone 2 hours haha. I'm his constant playmate.

Yeah, same! My son is almost 4 and we just barely had a baby. He is way too good at playing Nintendo switch games and knows how to select his own movies on our Amazon Fire Stick 🤦‍♀️. I've been doing better by getting us outside but he will not, I repeat, will NOT entertain himself. Even before I started letting him watch TV when he was a little younger, he hated playing alone. I'd get his toys out and he'd start playing and I'd try to sneak away to the kitchen, which is visible from the living room, to do dishes. Less than 5 minutes later he would come and grab me to come play with him. Now that he's got a colicky little sister, it's even more difficult. I'm slowly making small changes though week by week that I feel are making small differences. We read more throughout the day, we spend more time outside (dollar stores have awesome outdoor play stuff for cheap), and we play board games more. I'm really really struggling trying to incorporate chores in the middle of all of it so much husband has been helping. He's going to be going back to school soon though so I'm not sure how I'm going to do it alone. Just know you're not alone! And take baby steps. Maybe give your 4 year old 30 less minutes of screen time each week until you reach the desired amount of screen time. And maybe purchase cheap things at the dollar store that you can use for learning/activities. You can always talk to local libraries, schools, try to find out programs that give away free pre-K learning materials too (there's lots online as well!). You got this! And remember....baby steps. You'll be able to make a routine that works for you and him but take your time and don't stress too much!

I'm starting to think of that as the world opens up and returning to work becomes a possibility. My personal plan will be to heavily focus on practical life as that will allow us to get things done as a family, spend time together, and encompasses all the skills she needs to learn from motor to mathematics. The shelf will be available and maintained for her play time in the evenings and even more so on weekends 😁

I would also prepare the best person to be with them constantly i mean consistently that it is just one or 2 people who they have every day with them that they can fully trust and have that attachment relationship with. I would really really really recommend looking into the attachment relationship theories the talks on RU-vid whilst you are doing some chores or walking or something gabor mate goes into the importance of attachment. I think if you prepare the right environment at home and get one or two people to consistently nmbe there for the child then they won't have attachment issues and will feel more secure and the connection at every moment of detachment is so important so you can easily reconnect with them when you return to them. Keeping the environment secure and consistent will help with them reconnecting with you. I wish i had known about attachment relationships whilst i was pregnant. Also the stress a mother feels during pregnancy is not just to reduce risks in pregnancy but actually have a neurological impact on the baby they become more susceptible to stress the mlre they are exposed to stress hormones. Its a whole thing and i wish i hadn't started working for the place i work at now whilst i was pregnant and that i took the full year off maternity leave. The first 3 years are the most important years in a childs life for thier entire future of howbthey will interpret the world and how they will react to situations.

Thanks for sharing your day, it’s great... But basically you have to be rich and spend a lot of money to have a thousand toys and activities for a child to use in one single day! I mean, this is totally not realistic for the average middle class/lower middle class citizen! ... This is the ideal way of raising a kid, and it’s fantastic, I’m just sayin it’s a little sad that you need quite a bit of money to raise a child right.... I mean, how could you apply this Montessori lifestyle with no budget for buying toys/activity books and only money for food? What house hold/outside stuff would you use? Maybe that’s a video idea, how to do Montessori for the family with no budget for it!
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 3 года назад
Keep in mind that the “activity” portion of the day was only 2-2.5 hours… the rest of our day together is spent doing things anyone can do, regardless of budget or the kinds of toys someone has in their home. And quite honestly, those “other” moments (cooking together, exploring outside, getting dressed independently, etc) are WAY more integral to a Montessori lifestyle than any number of specialized activities. In any event, your concerns are definitely worth addressing in their own video, so stay tuned for that this coming week! ☺️

Do you have a space with just learning materials? How do you make sure they’re picking learning materials over playing with toys during the work cycle? I have an 8 month old that gets into and wants to be involved with my toddlers work or toys. She really only gets to do work when he’s napping. She’s also distracted by him when being he’s awake and would rather play baby toys with him! Any pointers?

Wow…I’m definitely a terrible mom. I have a 4 year old and a 3 month old and my 4 year old just basically runs around ruining my house all day. She won’t sit for activities. She won’t sit to eat. And she definitely doesn’t do learning like that. I just put her to bed looking a mess, because I just don’t even have the energy for her 3rd bath of the day. Ugh.

Have you tried to have some outdoor activities first? Like going for a walk, going to the playground etc so he has an opportunity to use up some of his energy? Also, do you prepare activities that are following his schema? maybe he is in a trajectory schema (interest in how objects and people move, and how children can affect that movement. This schema can be seen in children’s actions when they drop objects, jump, swing and climb up and down repeatedly. definition taken from internet)

I have an 17 month old boy and it’s the same. However, it’s gotten a little better ever since we started having more outdoor time. He can’t only have one outdoor time...I take him outside for about 30 min in the morning right after breakfast and then when we come back inside, it’s easier for him to focus. I hope that helps! 💙
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 3 года назад
I always defer to following their interests. If they are pulling things off the shelves (and you’ve already tried rotating for easier/harder/different types of work, or offering fewer choices), then perhaps they are simply working to master other skills right now (especially gross motor movement at that age) and therefore the shelf work holds less appeal. Try to consider how you can offer activities that encourage them to explore to their current interests - for example, if they are very into dumping things, offer some sensory bins of sand, beans, rice, or water where they can dump as much as they want! Otherwise, like another commenter said, perhaps they need a bit more outside time to get out their excess energy before they are ready to focus on quieter activities. It’s often a bit of a trial and error through your own observation, and you won’t always get it right - I know that I miss the mark sometimes, too. ;)
@SamanthaReil

Thank you all! He is definitely more interested in gross motor and we will try swapping outdoor and indoor time.

My son is going on 4 years old and he was sleep trained at 9 months and we never had any issues but with pregnancy #2 he started having issues and it has been going on for a while now (baby #2 is 16month) where he falls asleep in his bed but 90% of the time will wake up in the middle of the night and come to sleep with us. :)

@@TheMsChipsy Another option I read but haven't needed is to give them the problem back and coach them in an age appropriate way to an answer, so "hmm, two children, one wants to ride bike and the other wants to play at home, but we can only do one at a time. do you have any ideas?" and then see what they come up with! Might take you out of the middle of some of the battles, also gives them the skills to compromise even if you're not there to mediate.

Do you continue the whole thing of choice with chores? What about when they are older and they are given responsibility’s, are they to decide they don’t want to do them?
@sabrinamyneni1455
@sabrinamyneni1455 2 года назад
Montessori is about choice within boundaries. So the boundaries change as the child grows. When the child is older and has more responsibilities the choice might be about when the chores can be completed rather than which chores to complete. Also, the idea is that you’ve established a positive rapport so the child is generally interested in pleasing the parents.

For a while, we just didn’t have naps anymore and I started feeling like I was going crazy with not a spare moment to myself during the day. I also noticed they NEEDED some down time just to recharge, even if it didn’t include sleep. So I started just doing it with them one day! I explained how it worked, started small (just like 5-10 min), and now we’re up to 30 minutes. I’d like to get to an hour at least! It’s a work in progress. ;)
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 3 года назад
Also - I can’t really speak to the “transition”, since we kind of skipped that part. But having some practice ahead of time certainly sounds like a great idea, especially if your little one isn’t yet accustomed to longer stretches of independent play.
@MariaandMontessori
@MariaandMontessori 3 года назад
In the school, we had the 3 and 4 year olds together. The younger kids napped and as they got older and didn't want to sleep, they were allowed a choice of quiet activity but because the room was still dark and their friends were sleeping, they caught on to what to do pretty quick. Leaving the environment as it was for nap time seemed to be helpful in making that transition.
