CharlieBo313 i know you didn’t come to the south and not visit the Mobile/ Prichard area ! 😡I didn’t know you were coming down this way !!! Mardi Gras time, too. Everyone was out. Love the 334 as well. Graduated from Alabama State. I see you in the Northside!!!
CharlieBo313 having lived in Montgomery AL from 1995-2012, some of these neighborhoods I recognized especially that last one at the Z-Mart, that was about 3 blocks from where I was living when I lived in Montgomery Though, I'm surprised that you didn't go through Chisholm or Smiley Court or even Gibb's Village, areas that I wouldn't go through during the daytime, let alone at night
I know a lot of people make racially insensitive comments on this site about what they think about the people who live in places like this but I've met some of the nicest, kind-hearted people who came from the most poverty stricken, economic deprived communities. Most instances, they just trying to survive and raise their kids the best they know how. Think about it. A middle class kid from an affluent neighborhood in Florida walked into a school and brutally murdered 17 people so don't think only people from the hood do bad things.
I live in what's considered the hood too and it's interesting you rarely hear or people's homes being robbed. The middle-class neighborhoods though.. One of my cousins lived in a middle-class neighborhood in Fort Worth. She was in her home in broad daylight when the neighbor's son broke into her house. She had a gun and military training, but she has a hard time being alone now.
The slow death of once the greatest industrial powerhouse in the world, this is what happens when you don't manufacture your own goods & let other countries pay you peanuts to manufacture for them
whirling dervish yep, watching it happen in PGH for the past 30 yrs, everyone thought tech would save them, instead it put them out of work, unless you work a service job, hospital, or education jobs are tight here. Funny, this was once the "steel city" now there is one plant in the entire metro area & it's not 1/2 of what it was at it's peak
Archie Roku no, this is because america rebuilt it's enemies AFTER ww2, if we would have left them & germany on thier own we wouldn't have companies like alcor mittal, benz, nissan & nippon buying plants from us steel & & building factories here, we won the war, but lost the peace. Btw check it out, all the companies i named have plants in this area, & they pay nothing near what us steel did or the big 3 in detroit
Drugs are bad. Maintenance is hard work. You could blame their living conditions on racism. But, that would also suggest that white people went down there just to litter.
Sorry to reply so late but Montgomery is really divided as to how the different areas look you cross a certain road and it looks like you are in a whole new city.It really just depends.
thanks for the upload, Charlie... the first part of the video hit me the hardest, the suburban scene with the near dead shopping centers, empty parking lots.... and the sterile, cookie cutter housing.... the older neighborhood still had some charm and a sense of place.... I knew I was down south somewhere.... this from a Northerner who loves cities and has done some housing rehab. Douglas Kasten hit the nail on the head.... what do people do here for a living? Everything else follows suit. I wish them well this Christmas which is about all I can do....
There are so many buildings that could house the homeless. But cities like New York City spend thousands just for pricy hotel rooms. And a billion a year.
Alabama has a really big number of homeless people. Look living under the bridges and wooded area's around the town's. The organizations that get fed grants and millions of donated fund's do Not go where it's supposed to at all. Pitiful really.
@@lisaclark6977 the Salvation army in my country has been spending huge amounts on illegal boat people who tried to enter my country ! They escort them to hearings ... Psy for accom if they're returnrd to the community if they're no longer in detention , pay for their food , medical , etc , yet people who were born here and have paid tax have been refused help by then ! I wouldn't donate five cents to a church based charity !
@Authur Outlaw Civil Rights Activists history is a big part of Montgomery's culture. I see tourists of different races that come for that. I've been here 4 years and still haven't been, but I do want to go this year.
Don’t recall any west coast and southwestern states...or northwest or even Midwest. He sticks to the brothers...haven’t seen many whites or a single Mexican
Sadly, things have gotten worse in Montgomery. People dying almost every day, unnecessary arguments that leads to fights, children raised to be hateful thugs. I truly hope one day things will get better for my city. Regardless of so much negativity this city is giving off from mainly the black community, there are genuinely good hearted still around, as well as some surprisingly beautiful places to visit.
Greetings from Western europe. Free healthcare and education and universtity, 32hr workweeks and 9 weeks of payed vacation per year, payed sick leave for as long as you need, never seen a pothole, never heard gunfire, the streets are more than safe... PLZ get educated, vote wise and join the civillized world.
Hey man, this is a very good video. cause I searched so long for videos like this. Not specially Alabama, I was looking for a Video, where showing some 'normal areas'. So far, I just saw Videos from some big cities.
Thank you for these videos. As a Canadian these are my trips to the south which I used to do every year until you know who came in to the office. Hurry up and get him out so I can go back. I feel so at home down here. Blessing to you all, oops sorry, ya'll.
"Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery. Make me a poster of an old rodeo. Just give me one thing that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is such a hard way to go." - John Prine
I'm from Montgomery Alabama and I remember some of the places that you are driving through used to be well-to-do bringing in lots of business. Also look like you using some old footage because some of these places have been renovated before I moved out of the city. I think part of what you seeing is the lack of interest from the next generation to upkeep what our ancestors laid the foundation for.
Looks complete affluence compared to my trip travelling through Brazil's slums - was shot at two times and attempted kidnap that managed to get away hiding under a car.
@@flatbushmassachusetts8518 Dude... you live in a shithole country!!! Greetings from Western europe. Free healthcare and education and universtity, 32hr workweeks and 9 weeks of payed vacation per year, payed sick leave for as long as you need, never seen a pothole, never heard gunfire, the streets are more than safe... Living in denver and looking at some of the neighborhoods there all i can see is potential i would love to live there. You have to take some kind of initiative to make it look better love the style of the homes there im sure there is plenty opportunity for small businesses i see it in the pics all over wow
You may live in a "low income" or "middle class" community but a lot can be said about keeping your yard clean, house painted, and car parked in the driveway.
Millions $$$ for Congress members and their cronies, peanuts for us... thanks for reminding me that the little I have I'm thankful to have. I love my country but I fear my government...💰
Damn, I live in Montgomery. Most of this video is around the street from me. I live in a neighborhood that contains different cultures, including white. Just because some of the Gump looks like this doesn't mean all of it does.
I agree, he missed the "Worst" hoods by a long shot. Need to take him down by Trenholm, Westgate, South Rosa Parks, Northgate, Upper Wetumpka, to Eastdale Mall.
Charlie, a different kind of low income neighborhood, a different flavor of poverty here, when compared to that seen in your Detroit clips. There, widespread economic downturn has resulted in large swaths of uninhabitable streets. But here, despite the lack of resources to upgrade and remodel, there seems to be enough revenue for fundamental upkeep, and in the case of the house at 12:10, some pretty creative landscaping. Also, a real estate sign at 13:31 is always a good sign, along with the abundance of fenced properties, if not for security, but perhaps as a psychological delineation in an attempt to control what enters and exits the property. This looks like a low income, but stable, neighborhood.
I live 30 minutes North of Birmingham, and work in Tarrant. It is depressing to see this type of life. Before you start judging, walk a mile in some of these people's shoes. It's hard when everything is closed down, run down, and the leaders don't have the people's best interest at heart. Help those that are in need when you can, shake a strangers hand, tell a stranger good morning, etc. We've got to help each other, it all starts with love.
Chad Hyde Well, help will come to those that want to help themselves. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it. As soon as we black people take the time to research the democrats are the ones who have their foot on our necks to keep us down, and vote them out, then the change that we were looking for to come, will come.
depends where you go. mostly decent. in fact one of the places in this video with the gas station actually isn't *that* bad. I go there sometimes just passing through. the neighborhood around it *can* be bad but it's not a big deal really although I wouldn't wander around at dark.
Charlie, you should have seen the Toys R Us in Montgomery... the outside is a time capsule. A few miles south was home to RU-vid sensation Sammy Stephens who made Flea Market Montgomery famous!
The south side, north side , and west side, all have rough sections in Montgomery. All sides, including the east side also have some very decent neighborhoods as well though. If you’re gonna play some rap in the video showing Montgomery...at least play some local artists. Dezamn!
This is a product of people in Alabama not coming out to vote in midterm elections. These hoods used to be thriving communities in the 80's to early 90's. I'm from Montgomery, had to leave in 2004, because they couldn't support my Autistic child. Never ever want to come back to live.
No matter where you are in America or in the world, it's sad to see all the blight and struggle. It's not just in one place, it's in every city and state. If people really want to bring about a change for the better, bring it! It doesn't matter where you start. Just start somewhere! No matter how insignificant you might think your efforts would be. It all helps. It's not a job for just a few. It's a job for everyone! Do your part. Thank you and God bless you and yours.
Well, thanks for the travelogue, but I could have got the same thing from Google. Some facts, some stats, comments on research of crimes or something that make these bad neighborhoods would decrease the bore quantity. So, boarded up strip malls; don't know of any cities that don't have some. Some random trash on grounds of the projects, but I've seen much worse projects. These looked clean and in good repair. Most of the houses you randomly drove by were older, but with neat yards and seemingly well maintained. Yes, a few had boarded windows, but they didn't appear to be crack houses. Some were unsightly, with peeling paint and so on, but having your house painted is expensive and if the occupants are elderly or disabled doing it themselves is not an option. One great thing about the older neighborhoods is the size of the lots! What nice big yards. Without some facts and documentation I don't see these as necessarily bad areas.
This is what happens to cities when they refuse to adapt in the age of Globalization. Montgomery prospered when economic forces were driven by industrialization and demand for regional labor was strong. Now, technological advances (i.e., automation) and international labor surplus are putting strains on cities that continue to use the post-WWII economic model. For instance, after the 2nd WW ended Europe's industrial base was destroyed. The Europeans financed rebuilding their infrastructure on U.S. industry; and this continued from 1950 thru mid to late 80s. Meanwhile, countries like the U.S. moved away from industrialization and became a knowledge-based innovative economy. In other words, the jobs that are in demand now require using one's brain rather than one's hands - professional jobs that require license or certification; jobs that are heavily serviced based in which one uses reason and judgment; and jobs that require planning and implementing processes and procedures. Cities like this have failed their citizens because they did not prepare them for 21-century jobs. And until they do these cities will continue to decay, while waiting for jobs that have long gone and won't come back.
Razor Lite let me reply to you from a different perspective when you debase your manufacturing and send it all to china India and other low wage countries that work for under a $1.00 and bring the goods back here and sell them for the same price as if it was made in the United States you put many many Americans out of work and thus they do not have the money to pay their bill and up keep yet the pair of pants thats made for .75 cent and sells for $60.00 Levi jeans for instance, were are you going to get the money to pay for such item when you do not have a job. Keep American Jobs in America then we could have the money for the up keep of our homes etc, but this globilization bull shit only benefits the rich and the working class just goes to hell. All just one big lie even Trump talks about making America great but get his products manufactured across the ocean in one of them slave labor countries Nike makes a pair of sneakers for under $1.00 in cost bring them back to U.S. and sell for 800.00 a pair for Mike Jordons so who is winning Jordon and Nike.
Razor Lite I am a die maker which at one time was higher paid labor. Dies are now made using computers along with lasers & rule processors. They aren't made by men anymore but machines do a better job & hold accuracy to the 1,000 of an inch & they are faster because they don't take breaks. I'm glad I did it in their heyday but those days are gone now. Never even dreamed they could have machines do it. Die making is now a lost art & never coming back. I was stubborn to the very end & feel sorry for the guys that have 15 or 20 years learning that trade only to become unemployed & to young to retire & to old to retrain. Don't worry about it they are even working on replacing Truck drivers. I'm retired & now 73 years old glad I'm not 45 or 50 I would have to go back to school to learn to program computers using cad cam. Although years ago I did go to school & learned what I had to know but never had to work as a programmer. Still made them by hand until about 2016 when I stopped. Lol. Got out before they told me that I was a dinosaur & wasn't needed or wanted. I enjoyed making cutting dies my whole life
Westside representin ...Day Street, Hill street, Western Hills. But yeah, we got some neighborhoods that are still holding strong and we got too many neighborhoods that are just stagnant. But there are some very complex reasons why that is so a in we bare a lot of our own responsibility as to why some of this stuff has happened. Kudos to the people who still living the Gump and who are trying to revitalize the areas for everybody and not just a select few
Im from the gump.i use to stay on happiness in Ridgecrest. My unc use to stay right on S.Court St. The last road you was on. Cool vid. But seem like this a early morning vid. Making the gump look abandoned
Start a go fund me page so it will pay for his bills, gas and maintenance on his vehicle and if you live close to any of those cities you can upload a video yourself.
I’m from Montgomery Alabama I live in Atlanta now but to be honest the only side of the city that looks like that are the south and west side minority’s live in those area predominantly black but when you go out north and east it gets better
Born on Maxwell AFB. Lived in Chisholm. Robert E. Lee H.S. Worked for Montgomery Advertiser. Moved to Atlanta in ‘74. Worked for AJC. $105 a week more and the rent was cheaper.
not really, depends on which part of north. northwest isn't, a few parts northeast are. most of north is kinda bad too, although it's also relatively empty
There is no reason for any able body person to live like this...I just saw my hood on here and I love my hood but I got up off my ass and got up outta there and I ain't been to nobody college... If u don't want better for yourself u should at least want better for your kids u can't blame this one on the white folks of u stuck here that's all on u Gee... Facts
After the commercial, the second video showed a duplex community and at least it was clean, hardly any trash and the grass was cut. It just looked like a less affluent neighborhood, but it wasn't run down.
I am from Alabama and I got a hair cut when I was little next to my grandmother over there at ridgecrest but I was raised over there at ann street area
I'll never figure out why folks wanna live in cities, in saying that this Brit used to live in Wheeling, WV ....it's a city but it never felt like a city to me, well not like New York Etc. I guess because Wheeling was just not the size of most big cities. I prefer small town America that most cities. I do like some cities, Pittsburgh, PA ....I like London also Hello from England city girl ☺
I don't understand why do you call these places "hoods", they all seem to have private houses. Is it mainly because of the violence? i am used to consider hood only public housing, which is pretty popular in europe.
Thanks for showing this, my father and his family grew up here, he graduated from Lee High in the 50's.. Last time I was there was in the 90's.. never have seen this area before though... Looks like people take more pride even if they are poor in the fact that the streets aren't full of trash, yards not overgrown..Memphis is much worse!
im from the south and very proud of it i recently started watching your vids amazing how no matter where your travels take you .you never seem to locate the areas where white people live only black these people may work low paying jobs but they make it happen yesyou may see boarded up house but thats tokeep out vandels most of the time those properties are rental units owned by whites who have replaced windows or are renovating
Revelations 3:20 Behold, I stand at the 🚪 door, knock: if any man 👂 hear my voice, and open the door, I will come i to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Nem tudo é glória... Muito bom ver o outro lado dos EUA, o que ratifica que a pobreza é um mal que assola todo o globo, inclusive as superpotências econômicas.
I have been a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels in Montgomery for several years. Almost all of my clients do a good job of keeping their property neat and orderly, even the ones who rent.
We all struggle at one point in life and it's sad to see towns all across America abandoned or looking like ghost towns. The Good Ole Gump has lots of good folks there of all colors and the history there is LEGENDARY
