The thing about the injuries he suffered, MGM absolutely rushed his time in the hospital; rushed any "therapy", they didn't let the Dr's. do any extensive work, (made them wait which was fatal for correcting the conditions) because they wanted him back in front of those cameras to finish Raintree County-- it was a hugely expensive production. One side of his face was left paralyzed and some people have theorized that was due to the rush job the surgeons/doctors were told to do by the studio. Of course, he was in terrible pain and pills were provided. Got him hooked.

He had that car flying. My adoptive Dad worked for John Warner when Liz was married to John and I heard Liz talk about this very accident! Remember this was 1956 and cars were made of real steel and metals not plastic so to wreck it that bad he had to be flying and misjudged the curve. It's fortunate that he wasn't hurt any worse than he was.

Totally agree! 20 mph limit now so he had to be going way over that on a treacherous road he didn't know at night. Was he trying to keep up with McCarthy?? Certainly McCarthy could not have been going slowly with Clift following apparently at high speed. Wonder if McCarthy had been drinking, not watching his speed?

Thanks for setting the record straight on Montgomery Clift. So much speculation has done him injustice. Elizabeth loved passionately in many ways. 💜 💖. As Rock Hudson once said, She Loves People. This was clearly demonstrated in her legacy of fight against AIDS and her devotion to those close to her like Monty. Also enjoyed trip through Beverly Hills (memories 😃) and seeing Elizabeth's home at the time.

So true. And as far as Elizabeth Taylor goes she seemed like an all around beautiful person. She was also friends with James Dean who died in a fatal crash. So it seems like the pretty gay boys were drawn to her. And not for her looks, but because she was just a good person. And I wouldn't want to live in this neighborhood. This road is just plain dangerous.

@@thomashumphrey48 Yes, I read this too. But whatever happened back then, I think it's fair to say that these icons belong to the annals of history now. Very few, if any, people are alive who knew them, walked, talked and ate with them are still around to tell the story. All we can do now is research and go by what was written or documented. But I do believe in my heart of hearts that had James Dean lived he would have been an out spoken advocate for and against a lot of social issues. Like racism, gay marriage, women's rights etc. Based on what I've read he hated the idea of the rich and powerful taking advantage of the little guy, because that's what was done to him. Unfortunately the world will never know.

The interesting tidbit of the swerving headlights make me wonder if Monty might have not been trying to light a cigarette while driving and lost control. Just to think if he had gone a little slower or just spent the night at Elizabeth's house and drive back in the light of day, he wouldn't have had the life changing accident. @@nastybastardatlive "Unsafe at any speed" was the title of Nader's bestseller book, and so too his summary evaluative slogan that prompted US Congress to enact national auto safety law to mandate across all auto brands and models seat belts, and auto manufacturers to devise air bags, which like seat belts have saved countless lives. That you drive rear wheel is your bizarre choice.
@apexjoe4769
@apexjoe4769 2 года назад
Seat belts were available on some automobiles by the mid-1950s, but most customers were indifferent to their safety benefits. Even after federal regulations required seat belts in American cars starting with the 1968 model year, many drivers and passengers simply refused to use them.
@SPCLPONY
@SPCLPONY 2 года назад
@@apexjoe4769 You're right. Even when new safety items are provided, it takes time for the idea to catch on when one has driven for years without them. My 68' Mustang has lap belts for all 4 seats. It also has shoulder belts for the 2 front seats, but they are a separate belt that are tucked and stored along the roofline when not in use. One has to physically bring it down and connect it to a second seat belt clip. Although it only takes a few seconds, I doubt people today would bother to use them. Then, there is the fire issue with the gas tank that is unprotected in the event of a hard rear end collision. I added a aftermarket steel barrier between the trunk and backseat area.

They should have made a biopic of Montgomery Clift's life years ago, with Tom Cruise as MC. (Similarly, they should have made a biography of Jack Benny with Kevin Spacey as JB, but it's too late for that now. Spacey should have gone for JB instead of Bobby Darin, because he looks much more like Benny than he looks like Darin.) But anyway ........... This is not a gripe or criticism but merely an observation of a habit that I, as well, possess. Isn't it funny how many of us are locked into calling utility poles "telephone poles"? It seems to be a tradition we have been carrying on for at least 50 years. I am old enough to remember when Southwestern Bell started burying their lines everywhere and when the poles were used exclusively for electricity, but over the decades I have not been able to rewire my brain and call them "power poles" or even "utility poles". But we do it and it is still accepted, which I find interesting, lol.

The before-and-after stills probably do look very similar. He had extensive reconstructive surgery, plus it's incredible what the studio makeup artists were able to do, even back then. Also, photofinishers could perform camouflaging touch-ups in those pre-Photoshop days. It's the live shots in his films where the damage is noticeable, primarily the residual paralysis on one side of his face. If you're a Clift movie fan, and have seen a variety of his work made prior to, and after, the accident, I guarantee you'd notice the difference. You're right: Clift WAS the epitome of '50s cool, & could more than hold his own against other Method actors who shot to fame in post-war Hollywood.

So if he was following Kevin McCarthy that close, what caused him to start swerving coming down that road? Was it some kind of seizure? Anyway, love the vlog, love listening to you narrate it. I always like Monty Clift movies, shame that he was taken at such a young age!

So Great to see the Actual Place where Monty had his accident! I'd seen some on site pictures taken before the car was removed! But all these years I'd assumed it was a Tree he hit (funny how you remember things a certain way & find out you were misinformed) At least I heard "The Elizabeth Taylor Part" correctly! My husband & I were just talking about this about a Month Ago! Thanks for a quick "Dearly Departed Tour" of the scene! Now I know the REAL Facts! You always include the little Tidbits that No One Else knows! Nobody can Give a Tour like you Can! 😄 See You Soon (on your next Video) 👍

The article says the car’s damage was estimated at $2000.00! That’s laughable- like that ‘55 Chevy could be fixed! Btw, $2K then is equal to $20K now, which was the cost of that car when new! Why didn’t they just say it was a total loss??

Thank you Scott for traversing the route, but I stopped the video to take a Zofran. Thank goodness you were not killed while at the pole with a transformer. I (& many of your viewers) would be devastated if you had been killed on this curve. Please, Scott, reconsider being on such a narrow path with a blind curve in your future travels. How fast was he going? By the damage to the car (a heavy Detroit steel model), he had to be going faster than 20 mph. Perhaps he let Kevin get aways in front of him and then came down the hill fast to catch up and didn't get around on the turn.

Those car seats probably had only lap belts…and usually nobody bothered to use them in those days. Not likely any shoulder belts. Airbags? What are those? If it was a two-door, the front seat backs probably did not lock, and in a collision, the seat back would slam forward right behind you. The dash and steering wheel were hard steel on those cars, not plastic or anything cushioned. Might have even had a rear view mirror mounted on the dash. The steering column was a steel shaft all the way down to the chassis, I think. The body and construction of the cars weren’t designed to crumple in collisions, just be strong as they could be; meaning the car stopped pretty suddenly when it hit something solid, which slams the driver’s face into the dash and/or windshield with more speed. The occupants absorbed the impact. And the steering was probably not rack-and-pinion, and had a lot of play or slop. You could move the steering wheel an inch or two back and forth without changing the pointing angle of the tires. That doesn’t help with precise steering in a case like this. Drum brakes did not work as well. And it’s a heavy car. Headlights nowhere near as bright as we have today. And if the the engine stalled on what was probably a cold, carbureted, iron-block engine, then you lose the power brakes and power steering…and oh boy.

I confess I like to brag about my being a Montgomery Clift cousin, however it goes all the way back to the original Clift brothers arriving here in the 1690's. Ultimately one brother went south, (Monty's ancestor) and one stayed north, (My ancestor) My great, great grandmother was Helen Clift. So I'm like a 13th cousin many, many times removed, but you don't have to know that part...

A factor to consider is how much head lights have improved over the years. I have a '49 Chevy and compared to my newer Cadillac, the old Chev might as well have a flashlight taped to each fender.

Monty Clift was in no condition to attend Liz Taylor's little party ... He did NOT WANT TO GO but self-centered "Miss Taylor" insisted ..Monty was destroyed and she had to live with GUILT . deservedly so. Anyone really interested in the truth should spend a little time reading up on the FACTS of this terrible tragedy.
