In this episode, we're in Alabama running rivers on paddle boards at the Montgomery Whitewater Center.
This is a perfect park to advance your skills as a whitewater SUP paddler.
If new to the sport, stay in the upper pool to learn how to be balanced on your board in swirly water.
Intermediate paddlers can choose either the "Adventure" or "Comp" channels to improve the fundamentals of whitewater paddleboarding, including peeling in and out of eddies, hitting drops, surfing, and recovering from swims.
Advanced paddlers can lap the Comp channel, getting big water experience and master recovering from swims.
Because the current is fast and the eddies are powerful even the best paddlers will swim. Be humble and enjoy the experience. You will become a stronger and more confident paddler.
A few things to know before going.
* Montgomery Whitewater does outfit for flatwater paddle boarding in the bottom pool. You will have to bring your own whitewater gear, including river-specific paddle boards.
* No fixed-fin paddle boards are allowed on the conveyor belt taking you from the bottom to the top pool.
* This is a whitewater sport, so wear the appropriate gear including helmet, PFD, and shoes.
* If you choose to wear a leash, be sure to wear a QUICK RELEASE LEASH SYSTEM ABOVE YOUR WAIST. Like every river, never wear a leg/ankle leash in moving water.
I've been to many whitewater parks in the US. Montgomery Whitewater is wonderful because of the complexity of the channels, the ease of access, and the warm staff. After paddling, enjoy a cold beer.
Thanks for watching.
