You kept your grocery budget at $1300 for a long time even when grocery prices were creeping up, so of course it makes sense that your grocery budget would have to increase. Even so, you do a wonderful job of buying clean, healthy food and limiting the processed foods even though they are more convenient. I now only have one child at home and you inspire me with every video to eat better!

A blessing that you can afford to put your grocery budget. That isn't everyone's story. I'm still working with the same budget I've had for 3 to 4 years. I'm thankful to say we aren't starving by any means. I've learned ways to make it stretch. I also have a large garden which helps and am probably less health conscious then you. I also have chickens for eggs. I'm new to that within the last year. I would be cautious about making your own feed unless you have a good recipe or someone experienced telling you how. They won't lay properly if they don't have the proper feed.

Hi Sarah, years ago, my husband was taking microbiology in college, and did a project on figuring out what typical cleaner kills what virus and bacteria, and what doesn’t. What he discovered was that vinegar kills a lot! It kills more than Lysol. Lysol, in fact, kills very little. The one thing that kills EVERYTHING, is bleach. Bleach kills all so I also buy the Clorox wipes, or any store brand (like Walmart) that says “compares directly to Clorox wipes”. If it says it compares to lysol brand, I avoid it for the Clorox brands.

Raw honey will always crystalize. What we do is we scoop it into a glass jar, and then we put that glass jar into a sauce pan that has a bit of water in it. We put it on a burner on the stove, and turn the burner on to the very lowest setting with the lid to the jar off of the jar. You just have to watch it a little so that the honey doesn't start to bubble. That will soften the honey. Also, if it's really hot outside, scrape the honey into a jar, put the jar outside with the lid on. Then it will soften without having to use the stove at all. We buy our honey in bulk from a local bee keeper. Sometimes the honey we get is hard as well.
@rebekah3483
@rebekah3483 Год назад
I really think dividing it up, as soon as you get it, into jars instead of leaving it in the big bucket would help you be able to work with its hardness. Much easier to warm a jar of honey than it is the entire bucket!

My mental tally on your Sam's order was $800. Not too far off, but also factor in location - I'm in NY and I think grocery prices are typically higher here than they are for you. Groceries are not cheap, but eating well is priceless and dining out as a family is SO expensive.

I'm very lucky to have a organic farm just down the road from me and I buy in bulk from them so $20.00 for 25lb box of Roma's ( 2nds and I usually buy 200lbs- 350lbs depending on the year) peaches and cream corn for $6.00 a dozen, $0.50 a lb for pickling cucumbers. I buy our winter order of storing veggies from them potatoes, sweet potatoes, celeriac, carrots, parsnips, golden beets, red beets , kohlrabi green and purple, green cabbage, red cabbage, leeks, onions, squash, apples...... around 500lbs of food for approximately $400.00. They give amazing deals when you buy in bulk.

For cleaning use dehydrated orange or lemon slices, white vinegar and water. Let it sit about 24 hours or longer. I mix the slices with the vinegar and let it set. When you are ready to use it add to a spray bottle then add about a 1/4 of bottle water to 3/4 of bottle of solution. It's great for cleaning. Use the vinegar on fruit slices mix put about an inch in a small glass jar and equal to water add about 2 tablespoons dawn dish soap if you have a problem with flies or gnats. They will do a kamikaze mission and you won't have a problem with them any longer.

A really good recipe for homemade laundry soap is. 1 bar of zoat soap( found in the laundry isle at Walmart). Shredded. 1 cup of washing soda, 1 cup of borax, 1 cup of oxi-clean ...mix shredded zoat soap in boiling water and stir until melted. Then pour into a 5 gal. Bucket and add all the other ingredients .fill the bucket with very hot water and stir till well combined. Let set covered overnight. Next morning it should be gelled. Stir to break up. Fill 10 ,one gallon jugs half way with warm water , then fill the rest of the way, ( leaving about 2 inches head space) with laundry soap. Makes 10 gal. Use about 1/4 cup per load . Shake jug well before each use. Should last at least 6-9 months.

Their method is so easy to follow and the wholegrain sourdough is so good. White sourdough is delicious too, and organic flour is such an important and often overlooked piece of the health puzzle so do make the white bread too, but you won't beleive how satisfying itbis to eat wholegrain sourdough. Sun Dills. 10-12 pickling cucumbers, 6 cloves of garlic (peeled) ,6 fresh dill sprigs, 8 tablespoons kosher salt, 1 cup cider vinegar. Put 2 cloves of garlic and 2 dill sprigs in the bottom of a glass jar with screw-on lid. Pack halfway with pickles. Add 2 more garlic cloves and 2 more dill sprigs. Fill jar rest of way with pickles. Add the last 2 garlic cloves and dill sprigs. Add kosher salt, vinegar and fill jar with Cold water. Cover and shake until cloudy. Put into the sun for 3 days and leave out at night too. Refrigerate. They last 6 months in the refrigerator! Yummy!!

It only likes cooler weather though do if you plant it in the heat make sure you find a shady spot especially in the afternoon thats how I keep mine going through summer

The prices you’re paying would absolutely break us. I understand organic but ouch! My eggs this week at aldi $1.18 milk $2.08 and we go to a local farmers market to buy the same watermelon as you $4.00 God bless you I just couldn’t do it!

Just a heads up, I made the homemade laundry detergent for about 6 months and our septic drain clogged up in cold weather with borax crystals, not sure if it was something we did wrong or not... but poo crystal diving is NOT fun.... I am looking for a recipe without borax... let me know how yours does... Hugs~ Lea

I've been wondering about this. The machines may be damaged as well if it clogs certain components.

I ruined my washer by using homemade soap. Had to buy a new washer and switch back to store bought soap. Crystal from Homemaking on the homestead explains why this happens with homemade soap on her RU-vid channel vlog dated 8/6/2020.

Have you thought about getting a soda stream. Then you will have sparkling water on hand all of the time. You can put natural fruit juice in for flavour. It is nice just the bubbles.

Honey is very good. You should get honey that the hives are local to you as it builds up your amunity and for the germs near you.

Backing soda and vinegar cancel each other out 😁❤ I make my detergent with super washing soda and borax and a bar of dove or zote or ivory grated up with some scent beads but the vinegar is great for the rinse cycle. Put in a downy ball and toss in. Game changer

Oh my goodness it's already that time to leave the home?! Well every one always asked is it hard to raze a lot of children like that. And say it sometimes but the hardest when they all started to leave that is the hardest! You are brave thanks for sharing! 💕

Fyi I learned at the dole pineapple plantation in Hawaii that they (pineapples) don't continue to ripen once picked! They will get softer or go bad, but won't get any more ripe.

You should try raising your own birds for meat! We raise our broilers in a pen with four sides and a roof that you can lift for access. The sides are only maybe 2 ft tall so it's fairly light and I can just move it through my yard twice a day. Plenty of sunshine and fresh grass makes great chicken!

I have a little family of 3... but I like to have a stocked pantry and freezer. We got tons of fresh parmesan cheese that was close to the expiry date so I tried freezing it.. and it works great!

try crushed oyster shells added to your chicken feed - also look into a mineral blend for chickens - oyster shells are full of calcium so keep their eggs hard and sits in the chickens crop, like chicken teeth so the can digest their food

You can tell when pineapple is ripe when you can gently tug on one of the top leaves and it comes out. If it stays firm then it isn't ripe. With cantaloupe you know it's ripe when the end smells like cantaloupe (once you try it you'll understand).

Sounds like you would benefit from planting a garden next year. I know you had a small one in Lincoln. Start planning now for next year. I got chickens from a farmer north of Fremont for a few years. The price was very reasonable. I do not remember if they were organic though. I found several farmers on facebook by searching for Nebraska farms.
