These type of videos always get me going in cleaning and organizing with my plants, I still need a push at times and I'm 71. Your a breath of fresh air. Thanks you
I was just refreshing my feed hoping for planty content! Perfect timing 🥰🥰 I’m in the middle of removing one of my variegated alocasia frydeks from chunky soil into semi-hydro, so I’m happy to have a video to watch while I work! 💚🤍🥰
I really enjoyed this! I'm organizationally challenged and my life is chaotic lately, but I like watching other people organize as it gives me ideas I might try.
I like to upcycle my timmies iced coffee cups by washing them out and then using them as small moss prop containers. It’s perfect because the drinking hole allows a bit of air flow
Just wanted to say that I have loved your scindapsus sliver cloud for a while; and now that it’s doing well I’ve been inspired. I just ordered a rooted cutting and it will be my first scindapsus! 🥳 I’m beyond stoked for it to get here. 💚
Saturday is my designated watering day, and so every Saturday I go around and check all my plants. Most need water, but some don't. Then, when I have time during the week, I go around and check on all my needy plants--begonias, carnivorous plants. This has worked for me for years, and keeping it the same day or days means my adhd brain doesn't have to remember the last time I watered something! And honestly? I use a moisture meter on most of my plants because I'm an overwaterer.
I’m a messy creature is so relatable. I love these type of videos for the kick in the butt they give me. I love cleaning, organizing and doing Planty stuff while a video like this plays.
Hi Fern, great video as always. I hope you decide to continue this monthly reset, I did my own chores while you did yours. Right now, I have about 80 plants in my collection and the one thing I must do is keep my plant accessories organized!! And like you did in this video, I try to stay prepared with my mixes, my pots, etc. Second must do for me is keeping my plant room clean, I love it when I'm done and everything is all clean and sparkly, makes my plants look better and happier!!
I am on the same life journey right now! I’ve got a planner for the first time in my life and am *using* it consistently, getting shit done for once in my life lol and plants are a huge reason for that. And by the way you’re a huge inspiration and my Plant Lady Muse!
Omg this monthly reset is seriously the best idea I’ve ever heard. There are so many times I put off a task because I need to make a new batch of soil or etc! And two days a week designated is definitely doable for watering! I’ve been doing that for years now and it works well (and I’d say we have a similar number of plants) 😊
I’ll be interested in hearing if you prefer watering more of your collection, fewer days a week. For me, I tried that but found I prefer watering every day or two, fewer plants (and less time) each of those days. But obviously there’s no right answer - it’s whatever works!
I liked how you set up a plan. At 75 I do need a push as well as help from daughter to write a list, with my tremors I can’t write or type anything without taking a long time . I do move a few plants bye turning pot as walking past a plant. Very good 👍 video
I have a full time job that takes A LOT of my time but to help me keep up I use an app for watering and just planned a head to do repotting and organizing but the apps are amazing they remind me which plants a re due for watering or even fertilizing and i just check if that is tru and do it! there a re days i just go around and water but if any of you are busy this is great. :) love your videos Fern!
If looking for jumbo perlite, Optimize Organics based out of BC sells it!! I ordered it and it’s absolutely massive! To the point where I actually have to break some of it up to be a bit smaller sometimes. They’re the only shop I’ll order amendments from now! I started ordering from them a couple of months ago and I’m obsessed! INSANELY good prices too!!
I've been watching and waiting for your Hoya mist video, so I'm excited to hear it's coming! For my super thrive I bought a few little dropper bottles off Amazon so I don't have loose dirty droppers around. Since I only use a few drops at a time I don't need to refill it very often.
You could prep mosquito dunk tea bags! Like break them up, put them in a tea bag and put them in a jar so they’re already to just put in the water jug. Saves space and time for future Fern.
the little ghosts behind you in the intro are the cutest!! love these videos, gets me inspired to do organising of all my planty stuff! also, what size do you wear in tropics narcotics? I was struggling to picture what size would look good :)
Hey girlie, some fertilizers/nutrients (like GT , cal mag , silica , Myco ) you want to mix right before using because it messes with the pH levels , or will actually go bad. One time I mixed some up used it then didn’t need the rest came back 2 days later and I had literally floating baby mushrooms and other crap in there that didn’t look good! After a deep dive into google this can happen esp with Myco and any kind of beneficial bacteria’s etc .
Hey fern You should rinse your perlite outside before you use it so to keep the dust to a minimum in your home, keep yourself healthy Really enjoy watching your videos So happy you’re up to 124k
I enjoyed your video. I am trying to work out a routine for my plants too. I might try setting a specific time too. I get more done doing things a little at a time than in one marathon of chores. When my kids were little, I set a stopwatch when they did a chore. It helped them see that it really didn't take as long as they thought to get the chore done. I want to do things with my plants very relaxed and enjoy them. As I get more plants, I may want to see just how long watering takes, etc. If it becomes overwhelming, then I should cut back the numbers or find a better more efficient way to care for them. Right now, I am keeping my plants that need TLC on my kitchen windowsill, where I can keep a close eye on them. I like to start my day saying "hello" to my plants. I looked today and noticed lots of new growth! It's so exciting seeing the new baby leaves emerge. I need more info on grow lights. I am going to be needing some that are VERY affordable, energy efficient and LED so they do not get hot - my next research project is to learn about them. I also want more info on your orchid spray for hoyas. I don't have a hoya yet, but it's on my list. I am wondering if wick watering or self-watering pots might work for a couple of my really thirsty plants that are doing well as long as I water them on time. It would be nice if I had to miss them to know they will survive. I saw some African violets what were done in wicking pots under lights that were doing great. I might try some of them too, years ago, I think I overwatered them. So many possibilities and so much to learn getting back into my plants and loving it. 😊
Are there any hoyas (the fuzzy ones, linearis for example) that you don't spray with the orchid mist? Thank you for a relaxing, calming, organizing video!
I love your plant cart. Where do you normally keep it on a daily basis? If I kept it in Living rom, my husband would not like it as he would think it is an eyesore
I feel you on the watering schedule! I used to check plants for watering almost every day and it got so hectic. And like you said, a mess on the counter all the time 😅 I recently started watering on designated days and it has worked so well! Wishing you luck with your new care schedule! 🪴✨💚
Loved this inspiring video! I do need to organize my pots and planty things. I think your video motivated me. I sort of have a schedule, I section a day. But plants don’t always like that. I do like to put my plants in my tub and spray them down too. Ugh! Not more thrips! My monstera got them and I could deal! Wishing you the best. Thank you Fern! 💚
Yas girl! I need the motivation right now! Especially knowing what I’m going home to after work (thrips - ugh). I try to do big jobs seasonally and then maintain and do other big stuff as it comes up. Doesn’t always work though. I always have big plans in the works and ADHD to boot. But I need to get back to making a planner like you are. I’m trying to use my motto of “do a little a lot and a lot a little” like I (try to) do in the garden.
omg nothing feels better than clean vessels and freshly boiled substrate 🤌 lol! I always put those off but it feels so great to get done. thanks for always being an angel Natasha 😇
Hi. Just a little concern. Burning plastics release toxic fumes. If you stack the cups and use a small drill to drill holes in the bottom, it is somewhat safer and healthier for you. 🌱💚
Watering schedule tip, when you're doing your weekly watering and you find a plant that doesn't need to be watered yet, but it cant wait til next week, place a glass craft beed next to it. When you're walking around throughout the week, you'll know to just check those plants 🙂
Not sure the exact size, it just said "large" perlite and "fine" orchid bark. I am really liking the larger perlite and will definitely be looking for that again. And the smaller orchid bark pieces work better for a wider variety of my plants. Hope you're able to find what you're looking for and thank you for watching :)
heyy Fern! do you actually fertilise your plants throughout the winter? or do you change the dose they get? Also, I am having a major thripse outbreak as well and I am having the beneficial mites + nematodes + some sort of beneficial flies but they are still there :( do you recommend anything else? I really didn't wanna use chemicals but it seems like I have to :(
Hi. You can spray the orchid mist on your hoya's leaves. They love it and respond by giving lots of new growth. Ever since I started spraying my compacta, especially, it's started growing more stems and leaves after 2-3 years! Very important that when you do spray the leaves, set the plant somewhere for a couple of hours, at least, before putting it back in it's spot (mine are under lights). If you put it back right away after spraying, you run the risk of burning the leaves. Best to spray at night when the sun has gone down/lights have turned off. Fern has a recipe for a DIY orchid mist spray so that you don't have to keep buying the commercial stuff over and over. But do keep your bottle if you have one so that you can refill over and over! HTH!
Could you tell me what the weight/size of the block of sphagnum moss?? I bought some from Amazon and got a block that was so small I couldn't fill one moss pole! 😂 Just learning here!!
It was the 1kg that I got, I'll attach a link here if you'd like to see it: www.crystalstarnursery.com/collections/botanical-treasure-accessories/products/one-mile-sphagnum-moss?variant=39706541523126
I so want to be a girl that has a planner and sticks to it... I had a planty diary and planner and it was going great for about a month and then I just stopped. I kinda go with the flow with my plants, they show me when they need watering, repotting etc, and then I do those things. For me, keeping a journal was never an option 😢 But I so want to be that person. 😂 but then again, I am not good at planning my own life and chores, either...
